Gargantua and Pantagruel is a satire ridiculing the educational and religious establishment of his day. W. Heath Robinson had already become one of the finest illustrators of books including his own Bill the Minder 1912 A Midsummer Night's Dream 1914 and this fine edition of Rabelais 1921. The English translation was begun by Sir Thomas Urquart and finished by Pierre Motteau. They attempted to be delicate but besides sex Rabelais often deals with the problems of the removal of bodies wastes. He states that excrement and Piss or the lack thereof keep the Physician with patients. The Typography and printing of this book was extraordinary. One of the finest productions of the Navarre Society bound in three-quarter red Morocco over salmon cloth raised bands gilt title gilt within one compartment others decoratively stamped in gilt top edges gilt one bumped corner otherwise fine.
