Annaeus Lucanus, Hugo Grotti, Corn Schrevel
Bello Civili Hug Grotii Farnabii Notis Integris Et Variorum Selectissimis Accurante corn. schrevelio
London: Prostant Venales 1818. Leather. Very Good. 9" by 5.5". None. A comprehensive scholarly edited copy of Lucan's famed epic poem 'Pharsalia' or 'De Bello Civili'. A New Edition of this work. This poem details the war between Julius Caesar and Pompey the Great's Roman senate forces. 'De Bello Civili' was the manuscript name for this work. It is also known as 'The Parsalia' and commemorates the decisive victory of Caesar during the Battle of Pharsalus Thessaly Northern Greece in 48BC. It was started in 61 AD and enjoyed widespread circulation until due to a falling out between the Emperor Nero and Lucan the work was banned by Nero. Edited by and with notes by Hugo Grotius a Dutch jurist and economical theologist. With further review by Cornelis Schrevel a Dutch physician and scholar. Lucan was a Roman poet from Hispania Baetica. He is often seen as one of the most prominent figures of the Imperial Latin period. He found great success compared to other poets with his youth and speedy writing on his side. Lucan was once friends with the great emperor Nero but they fell out after Nero forbade the publication of many of his poems. Lucan later joined the Gaius Calpurnius Piso conspiracy against Nero. Once this was discovered he committed suicide. In a full calf binding. Externally rubbed to the joints and extremities. Patches of rubbing to the joints. Fading to the board edges. Prior owner's inscription to the recto of front endpaper Hafel. Internally firmly bound. Pages are generally bright with just the odd spots. Very Good Prostant Venales hardcover
