Alice
St. Martin's Press 2002. Hardcover. New/New.
Author: Hugo Vickers

Publisher: St. Martin's Press

Binding: Hardcover

ISBN: 9780312288860

Release Date: 2002

Number Of Pages: 496

Details: "In 1953 at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II Princess Alice was dressed from head to foot in a long gray dress and a gray cloak and a nun's veil. Amidst all the jewels and velvet and coronets and the fine uniforms she exuded an unworldly simplicity. Seated with the royal family she was a part of them yet somehow distanced from them. Inasmuch as she is remembered at all today it is as this shadowy figure in gray nun's clothes."Princess Alice mother of Prince Phillip was something of a mystery figure even within her own family. She was born deaf at Windsor Castle in the presence of her grandmother Queen Victoria and brought up in England Darmstadt and Malta. In 1903 she married Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark and from then on her life was overshadowed by wars revolutions and enforced periods of exile. By the time she was thirty-five virtually every point of stability was overthrown. Though the British royal family remained in the ascendant her German family ceased to be ruling princes her two aunts who had married Russian royalty had come to savage ends and soon afterwards Alice's own husband was nearly executed as a political scapegoat. The middle years of her life which should have followed a conventional and fulfilling path did the opposite. She suffered from a serious religious crisis and at the age of forty-five was removed from her family and placed in a sanitarium in Switzerland where she was pronounced a paranoid schizophrenic. As her stay in the clinic became prolonged there was a time where it seemed she might never walk free again. How she achieved her recovery is just one of the remarkable aspects of her story.
St. Martin's Press hardcover

Weidenfeld and Nicolson 1979. Hardcover. Born in Paris to American parents in 1881 she suffered a traumatic childhood after her father shot her mother's lover dead. Educated in America she returned to Europe where she captivated and inspired some of the greatest literary and artistic names of the Belle Époque. Marcel Proust wrote of her 'I never saw a girl with such beauty such magnificent intelligence such goodness and charm.' Berenson considered marrying her Rodin and Monet befriended her Boldini painted her and Epstein sculpted her. She inspired love from diverse Dukes and Princes and the interest of women such as Comtesse Greffulhe and Gertrude Stein. It wasn't until she was 40 that she achieved the wish she had held since the age of 14 to marry the 9th Duke of Marlborough. Divorced from fellow American Consuelo Vanderbilt in 1921 she became his second wife. Now her circle included Lady Ottoline Morrell Lytton Strachey and Winston Churchill who described her as 'a strange glittering being'. But life at Blenheim was not a success. When the Duke evicted her in 1933 the only remaining signs of Gladys were two sphinxes bearing her features on the west terraces and mysterious blue eyes in the grand portico. Gladys became a recluse. The wax injections she'd had to straighten her nose when she was 22 had by now ravaged her beauty. She was to spend her last 15 years in the psycho-geriatric ward of a mental hospital. There she was discovered by a young Hugo Vickers who visited her for two years - intrigued and compelled to unmask the truth of her mysterious life. In his fascinating and revealing biography drawing on Gladys's personal archive and his own research all over Europe and America Hugo Vickers uncovers a beguiling clever independent woman who was the brightest star of her age. He once asked her 'Where is Gladys Deacon' She answered him 'Gladys Deacon . She never existed.'
Weidenfeld and Nicolson hardcover

Vivien Leigh
Indigo Publishing 2007. Hardcover. New/New.
Author: Hugo Vickers

Publisher: Indigo Publishing

Binding: Hardcover

ISBN: 9780972595131

Release Date: 2007

Details: Vivien Leigh won international acclaim at the age of twenty-six when she crossed the Atlantic and walked off with the coveted part of Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind under the noses of some of Hollywood's most famous stars. For this part alone she has earned a lasting place in film history. She was hardly ever in a bad film or a bad play and she tried a wide range of parts - scoring notable triumphs in A Streetcar Named Desire as a convincing Lady Macbeth and as Sabina in The Skin of our Teeth. There have been many biographies of Vivien Leigh invariably Hollywood filmographies most of which have been inaccurate and incomplete. Hugo Vickers approached his subject as a human being according her the same detailed research that the readers of his Cecil Beaton and Gladys Duchess of Marlborough have come to expect of him. He examined the previously uncharted story of Vivien Leigh's antecedents making surprising new discoveries. He was able to bring Vivien's parents to life as real people with the help of a great number of family documents letters and diaries made available by Vivien's daughter for the first time. These give the first clear account of the atmosphere in which Vivien was raised. He traced the progress of her relationship with Leigh Holman from their first meeting through the period of their engagement marriage and divorce and showed how they formed an important lasting friendship helped by the complete set of letters Vivien wrote to him between 1932 and 1967. He made extensive use of the Oswald Frewen diaries an essential source not only on that marriage but on Vivien's elopement with Laurence Olivier and their subsequent adventures.Hugo Vickers also examined Vivien's film and stage career writing of her as a person and not as the 'property' of a film company or a name on a contract. He examined her films and drawing on a great number of interviews with famous figures of the stage he recreated her part in the life of English theatre in the 1940s and 1950s. An important feature of the book is of course her love for Laurence Olivier and their twenty year marriage so much of it made difficult by recurring bouts of tuberculosis and manic depression. Hugo Vickers drawing on many hours of conversation with her devoted friend the actor John Merivale explained how Vivien re-established her life after the divorce.Vivien Leigh emerges as a more real and more intelligent person than in previous accounts a spirited and courageous actress brought down by ill-health.
Indigo Publishing hardcover
