‎"DE VRIES, HUGO. - THE REDISCOVERY OF MENDEL'S LAWS - THE BIRTH OF MODERN GENETICS.‎

‎Sur la loi de disjonction des hybrides. (The Law of Segregation of Hybrides - Das Spaltungsgesetzt der Bastarde).‎

‎Paris, Gauthier-Villars, 1900. 4to. No wrappers. In: ""Comptes Rendus Hebdomadaires des Séances de L'Academie des Sciences"", Tome 130, No 13. Titlepage to tome 130 a. pp. (809-) 864. (Entire issue offered). De Vries paper: pp. 845-847. Rather poor paperquality, fragile. Small nicks to margins of titlepage.‎

‎First appearance of a milestone paper in genetics being the ""REDISCOVERY"" OF MENDEL'S LAWS OF HEREDITY"" - This paper, together with the two other papers from the same year by Carl Correns and Erich Tschermak, laid the foundations of a new scientific discipline that, in 1906, was given the name ""genetics"", and less than a century later, rose to become the leading science in Western society. This French announcement was published 4 days before his longer paper ""Das Spaltungsgesetzt der Hybride"", in which Mendel is mentioned.De Vries completed most of his hybridization experiments without knowing about Mendel's work. Based on his own results, de Vries drew the same conclusions as Mendel. De Vries published his work in 1900, first in French then in German. In the French report there was no mention of Mendel, but this was amended by de Vries in the German paper. It is possible that de Vries read Mendel's paper before he published his own, and included Mendel's name in the later printing when he realized that other people also knew about Mendel's work. De Vries may have thought that his own conclusions were superior to Mendel's. ""During the 1880s, de Vries became interested in heredity. In 1889 he published Intracellular Pangenesis, in which he critically reviewed previous research on inheritance and advanced the theory that elements in the nucleus, ‘pangenes’, determine hereditary traits. To investigate his theories, he began breeding plants in 1892 and by 1896 had obtained clear evidence for the segregation of characters in the offspring of crosses in 3:1 ratios. He delayed publishing these results, proposing to include them in a larger book, but in 1900 he came across the work of Gregor Mendel, published 34 years earlier, and announced his own findings. This stimulated both Karl Correns and Erich von Tschermak-Seysenegg to publish their essentially similar observations."" (Oxford Dictionary of Scientists).Parkinson ""Breakthroughs"" 1900 B. - PMM 356 (the note).‎

‎Marion de Lorme. Drame.‎

‎La Haye, G. Vervloet, 1831. Bound uncut w. the orig. front wrapper in a very nice private hcalf w. raised bands and gilt ornamentations on back (Petersen & Petersen). First blank leaf partly pasted on to inside of front wrapper. Apart from a bit of soiling to front wrapper, an excellent copy.‎

‎The rare Haag-edition, printed the same year as the first edition (Paris, 1831), which is ""importante et rare"" (Carteret I:403). ""Marion de Lorme"" is one of Hugo's early works and the first play to be accepted for production under Hugo's own name. The work portrays the French monarchy - a controversial topic at the time - and due to this portrayel being far from flattering, the work was censored and banned. Rare with the orig. wrapper and in uncut condition. On the verso of the first blank leaf is a contemporary handwritten inscription, stating that the previous owner (Ch. Deiters) met with Gustave Doré: ""Ch. Deiters/ a. Utrecht en Hollande (pour 26 Stuver)/ ee XI Septbr 1833 (Hotel de Bellevue)/ vers les IX heures (au soir) - jaret/ a partir pour Bois et Duv (?)"" avec/ Gustave D."" The book has a very impressive Danish provenance. It has been in the libraries of some of the most important Danish bookcollectors and bears the ex libri of K.F. Plesner, Einar Christiansen, Poul Linneballe and H.P. Rohde.‎

The sugar and the cytoplasmic pigment never entered the bath. In contrast, if the concentration of cane sugar or sodium chloride in the external liquid were raised, the cytoplasm contracted, returning to its normal volume when exposed to pure ayer. The impermeability of the cell wall to cane sugar and sodium chloride and the ready passage of water through it was thus established. De Vries gave the name of plasmolysis to this concentration..""‎

‎The Magic Bishop. Hugo Ball Dada Poet‎

‎-Camden House 1998-. First edition. xv254 pages with index. Illustrated. Cloth. Fine in dustjacket. Hugo Ball 1886-1927 poet musician dancer impresario philosopher was one of the brilliant literary figures of the early twentieth century. Working with some of the great artists of his time including Kandinsky von Laban Tzara and Hans Arp he was at the cutting edge of modern thought as theatre director Dada agitator and leading member of the luminous Berne circle. This study takes a new look at Ball providing above all a close reading of his texts and focussing on works which are seen as open-ended or given to inventing their own form including Tenderenda der Phantast his abstract poem cycle 'Gadji beri bimba' and Simultan Krippenspiel a 'noise concert' or opera which enthralled his audience the night of May 31 1916. The book deals first with Ball's education as an artist and with the important figures in his life notably Max Reinhardt Frank Wedekind and Vassily Kandinsky whose theoretical stance he came in part to adopt. Subsequent chapters examine his theatre work as actor playwright critic and dramaturge comprising his years of apprenticeship in Berlin Plauen and Munich. The Magic Bishop. ‎ART NOUVEAU AND ART DECO BOOKBINDING: FRENCH MASTERPIECES 1880-1940‎

‎New York: Harry N. Abrams 1989. 292 x 235 mm. 11 1/2 x 9 1/4". 200 pp.Preface by Priscilla Juvelis.
FINE HONEY BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO DRAMATICALLY INLAID BY HUGO PELLER stamp signed on rear doublure covers with large wavy black tentacles dotted with gilt three on upper cover two on lower emanating from a yellow patch extending across the tail of the spine onto both covers the tentacles outlined in white a bright yellow sun-like spot on each cover embraced by two of the tentacles smooth spine with gilt titling black morocco doublures tooled with a spray of gilt dots yellow morocco free endleaves. Original dust jacket bound in. Housed in a matching brown morocco-backed linen clamshell box. Illustrated throughout with many excellent color pictures of bindings and with a few black and white text illustrations. Title page signed by Priscilla Juvelis. ◆In mint condition.

This is a remarkably useful survey on modern French bindings and binders--a volume that has become an indispensable reference on the subject--offered here in an almost startling binding by one of the outstanding continental binders in the second half of the 20th century. The son of a master bookbinder Hugo Peller 1917-2003 was a Swiss artisan whose skill as a binder was equalled by his talent for teaching; he is cited by some of the foremost designer bookbinders working today as their most influential instructor. Our binding's inlaid and onlaid leather elements odd-numbered gilt dots of various sizes and fillets within an abstracted image are characteristic features of Peller's bookbinding designs. He won prizes in many countries for his work was elected a member and served as vice president of the Meister der Einbandkunst and was director of the Centro del Bel Libro in Ascona from 1978-83. In the text here the first major study of a fascinating period in French bookbinding authors Duncan and De Bartha assess the work of more than 40 of the finest binders during the period under review. Detailed biographies and bibliographies are furnished at the conclusion of the main text. While the present eccentric--even mischievous--binding does not reflect the content of the book in a literal way cephalopods are not even mentioned by our authors its bold expressiveness certainly is appropriate for a work that examines revolutionary trends in modern bookbinding. In the matching suede-lined morocco-backed chemise and morocco-trimmed slipcase. Original paper wrappers bound in. Bibliotheque de M. René Descamps-Scrive II 423 this copy; Carteret II 399. A FLAWLESS COPY.

This is the superb Descamps-Scrive copy of Hugo's revolutionary play in a binding by one of the great French masters—a bibliopegic achievement that reflects the play with its memorably exuberant and flamboyant style as seen particularly in the intricacy of its highly decorative doublures. When "Hernani" debuted on 25 February 1830 it caused a fierce argument among the audience--between the young Romantics led by Hugo's friend Théophile Gautier and the fans of classical theatrical styles--that became known as the Battle of Hernani. According to the Library of Congress "The clashes lasted several days and marked the triumph of romantic drama which dominated the stages of French theaters for years to come." Gautier would later reminisce: "February 25 1830! This date remains written in the depths of our past in flamboyant characters: the very first performance of Hernani! That evening decided our lives! It was there that we received the impetus which still drives us on after so many years and which will see us through to the end of our career." The binding here is as uninhibited by tradition and as over-the-top dramatic as the play with arresting design motifs inspired by Art Nouveau and Orientalism and with richly colored leathers that both contrast with and complement each other. In her "Bookbinders and their Craft" Prideaux says that the Gruel firm founded in 1811 "has always had the highest reputation . . . for initiative in artistic matters as well as for irreproachable execution in the detail of its many-sided achievements." Our binding stands as testament to the truth of this statement. The Gruel bindery was managed by several family members over the years most famously by Léon Gruel 1841-1923 and the list of binders who trained at the Gruel atelier is the most distinguished in Europe. Our binding was very probably done by Léon in the late 19th century for the famed French bibliophile René Descamps-Scrive 1853-1924 whose collection was as prestigious as Henri Beraldi's. Descamps-Scrive owned the volume in any case as it was auctioned after his death as part of his library at the Parisian gallery Georges Petit in May 1925 where it was lot no. 423 with full-page illustration. Like Beraldi Descamps-Scrive collected beautiful bindings that typified major styles and periods and was known for his insistence on acquiring only volumes in perfect condition. We have sold many fine bindings with elaborately decorated doublures but nothing quite like the ones seen here: they resemble a kind of fiery thicket although formed with rigorous control by a masterly binder. Engraved allegorical title page engraved coat of arms of Pope Urban VIiI initial introductory enblem and 45 leaves of engraved emblematic plates by Boëce van Bolswert; 32 412 3. 1 vols. 8vo. Contemporary vellum slightly soiled. Preliminary leaves misbound. First edition. Engraved allegorical title page engraved coat of arms of Pope Urban VIiI initial introductory enblem and 45 leaves of engraved emblematic plates by Boëce van Bolswert; 32 412 3. 1 vols. 8vo. First edition of the most popular spiritual love emblem book which made the genre popular throughout Europe in the 17th century and beyond. By the end of the 18th century the Pia Desideria had been reprinted nearly 40 times in Latin French German Spanish Dutch Polish English Danish and Italian. This emblem book mixes tender messages of care with dire warnings to sinners and while it is written in Latin demanding a well-educated reader it proved to be wildly popular. One of the keys of the popularity of this work are the emblematic designs of Boetius Adamsz. van Bolswert ca. 1580-1633 each of which is accompanied by an explanatory caption. Born in Bolsward Friesland Boetius was a pupil of Abraham Bloemaert at Utrecht and went to Antwerp around 1618 joining the painter's guild in 1620. Boetius also worked in Brussels where he met and was inspired by Pieter Paul Rubens. Herman Hugo 1588-1629 a Brussels Jesuit was teacher at the Jesuit College in Antwerp and confessor of the Duke of Aerschot with whom he went to Spain where he was appointed army chaplain to Spinola. This book was used as a rhetorical example for students of Rhetoric at the Jesuit College at Brussels.
