‎Victor Hugo Champion of the Needy Wants Profits from His Great French Epic Donated to the Poor‎

‎15/12/1868. <p>From 1830 into the 1860's there were a series of massive political upheavals in Europe. Most were caused by the desire of the peoples of many nations to oust their royal elites and attain a fairer and more representative government. At the core of this was a struggle between the haves and have-nots. The elites fought back hard and there was fighting in the streets. There was a revolt in France in 1830 one in which Victor Hugo took part. but it led to the disappointing enthronement of King Louis Philippe. There was a widespread liberal revolution throughout much of the continent in 1848 which was crushed. In 1851 France was again in upheaval and Louis Napoleon seized power and proclaimed himself emperor. By 1860 forces in Italy and Germany sought to unify their respective people in national entities and wars were in progress that would soon achieve those goals. Thus there was both a significant reorientation of the political landscape the frustration of populist movements and the rise of nationalism and the modern nation state. Meanwhile in the United States brother fought against brother not against royal elites but on behalf of ideals.</p><p>In the world of philosophy and literature the most important year was 1862. That spring Victor Hugo released to the public a work of great scope – Les Miserables – that brilliantly examined the nature of good evil and the law in a sweeping story that encompassed history politics morality philosophy law justice and religion. It had taken 17 years to complete. It focused squarely on the poor of the streets of France during the French uprising and the protagonists were people with no means or those who had previously been poor. Hugo was a champion of the poor. He left five sentences as his last will to be officially published: ""I leave 50000 francs to the poor. I want to be buried in their hearse. I refuse funeral orations of all churches. I beg a prayer to all souls. I believe in God.""</p><p>La Légende des siècles The Legend of the Ages is a collection of poems by Hugo conceived as an immense depiction of the history and evolution of humanity. Written intermittently between 1855 and 1876 while Hugo worked in exile on numerous other projects the poems were published in three series in 1859 1877 and 1883. Bearing witness to the unparalleled poetic talent evident in all Hugo's art the Légende des Siècles is often considered the only true French epic. In it he contemplated the ""wall of the centuries"" indistinct and terrible on which scenes of the past present and future are drawn and along which the whole long procession of humanity can be seen. The poems are depictions of these scenes.</p><p>Alphonse Auguste Frédéric Thurner was a musician and friend of Hugo. He published the ""Chanson d'Edviradnus"" in 1886 after Hugo's death based on ""La Légende des Siècles"".</p><p><strong>Autograph letter signed</strong> December 15 1868 to Thurner.<em> ""Sir your book is an excellent treatise. I learned a great many things and thank you. Title these stanzas La Chanson d’Edviradnus. Near Fine bound in 19th-century quarter navy morocco with marbled boards raised bands and gilt spine decoration and marbled endpapers. Each volume is octavo with clean text and firm bindings. There is light foxing throughout. The set includes 34 steel engravings each with a tissue guard. This edition is listed in Vicaire III and Carteret I. Vr Hugo." * "Dans le salon de la bibliothèque de l'Arsenal, dont il est le conservateur en chef depuis 1824, Charles Nodier accueille chaque dimanche soir toute l'élite littéraire et artistique romantique durant les dernières années de la Restauration et les premières années de la Monarchie de Juillet. Hormis Hugo qui était l'un des invités les plus assidus, et plus tardivement, Musset, Dumas et Balzac, on y trouvait "les représentants de tous les métiers du livre - depuis la conception, par l'illustration, la publication, jusqu'à la critique [...] dans une atmosphère amicale et conviviale" (Marta Sukiennicka). Hugo invite ici son correspondant à un bal masqué lors de ces fameux dimanche. Loin de n'être qu'un lieu de divertissement, ce salon du "cénacle de l'Arsenal" fut un des hauts lieux du Romantisme. Ayant réussi à se soustraire à ses obligations à la Garde Nationale dont il était sous-lieutenant en 1830, Hugo s'était certainement fait remplacer par un surnuméraire qui avait fait son tour de garde - même les plus illustres de nos écrivains n'échappaient pas à ce devoir militaire. ‎Poème autographe signé «V. H.» de Victor Hugo, quatre quatrains à lencre noire sur une page dun feuillet présenté sous encadrement en baguette dacajou. Cachet à froid de la ville de Bath dans la partie inférieure gauche. Plis horizontaux et verticaux, petites rousseurs le long des plis, quelques taches pâles en marge inférieure droite, sans atteinte au texte. Quelques petites traces sombres en marge inférieure droite, lune affectant une seule lettre du mot «retombe». Manuscrit original et version antérieure au texte final de lémouvant poème autographe de Victor Hugo, publié sous le titre «Écrit sur le tombeau dun petit enfant au bord de la mer» dans son recueil Les Rayons et les Ombres (Paris, Delloye, 1840). * Hugo composa ce magnifique éloge funèbre à la mémoire du jeune neveu de son grand ami Auguste Vacquerie, décédé à lâge de quatre ans et dix mois. Le poète avait promis un poème en épitaphe et adressa personnellement le présent manuscrit à Vacquerie: «Prenez donc ces vers, si vous en voulez toujours pour la tombe de ce cher petit» (Lettre à Vacquerie, 21janvier 1840). Comme la justement remarqué Joseph Petrus Christiaan de Boer, «Il ny a aucune douleur que le poète ait su mieux comprendre et plus délicatement exprimer que limmense tristesse qui remplit le cur des parents à la mort dun de leurs enfants» (Victor Hugo et lenfant, 1933, p. 48-49). Ce poème inaugure un sublime et macabre ensemble duvres composées à loccasion des drames familiaux qui touchèrent les familles dHugo et de son ami Auguste Vacquerie. Le plus célèbre dentre eux sera «Demain dès laube...» écrit après la noyade de sa fille adorée Léopoldine aux côtés de Charles, frère dAuguste Vacquerie, le 4 septembre 1843, peu de temps après leur mariage. Hugo compose ces vers pour Charles-Émile Lefèvre, jeune enfant de la sur de Vacquerie, qui séteint inopinément le 6 novembre 1839. Le 21 janvier 1840, Hugo envoie à Vacquerie le présent manuscrit, où figure une variation par rapport à la version définitive parue le 16 mai de la même année chez Delloye: «Vieux lierre, frais gazon, herbe, roseaux, corolles ; Eglise où l'esprit voit le Dieu qu'il rêve ailleurs ; mouches qui murmurez d'ineffables paroles A l'oreille du pâtre assoupi dans les fleurs ; Vents, flots, hymne orageux, chur sans fin, voix sans nombre ; Bois qui faites songer le passant sérieux ; fruits qui tombez de l'arbre impénétrable et sombre ; Étoiles qui tombez du ciel mystérieux ; oiseaux aux cris joyeux, vague aux rumeurs[plaintes dans le poème publié]profondes ; froid lézard des vieux murs dans les pierres tapi ; plaines qui répandez vos souffles sur les ondes ; Mer où la perle éclot, terre où germe l'épi ; Nature d'où tout sort, nature où tout retombe, feuilles, nids, doux rameaux que l'air n'ose effleurer, Ne faites pas de bruit autour de cette tombe ; Laissez l'enfant dormir et la mère pleurer.» Le poète avait accompagné le manuscrit dune touchante lettre: «Voici enfin, mon poëte, ce que je vous ai fait stupidement attendre si longtemps. [...] Prenez donc ces vers, si vous en voulez toujours pour la tombe de ce cher petit [...] Du reste je ne me crois pas quitte pour si peu envers cet ange. Jai commencé pour lui quelque chose de plus long que je déposerai un de ces jours aux pieds de la pauvre mère» (uvres complètes de Victor Hugo, Correspondance I, Albin Michel, 1947, vol. 41, p. 141). On ne sait quelle autre uvre sera adressée à Marie Arsène Lefèvre, la «pauvre mère», qui perdra en moins de quatre ans son mari et ses deux fils. Hugo composera également deux poèmes en souvenir de Paul-Léon Lefèvre, le frère jumeau de Charles-Émile, qui le suivra dans la tombe trois ans plus tard à lâge de sept ans (Contemplations, Liv. III, XIV et XV). Limmense douleur qui affecta Hugo et Vacquerie, accablés de deuils, ne fera que rapprocher leurs «curs liés au morne piédestal» (Contemplations, Liv. V, I, «À Aug. V.»).
