Rudyard Kipling
Kim
New York: Doubleday & Company Inc. c. 1940. This is a handsome jacketed reprint undated but from the early 1940s. It is a handsome edition the binding in navy cloth with Kiplings blind-stamped signature on the front cover and four illustrated gilt panel scenes on the spine. The contents feature illustrated plates blue-stained top edge and untrimmed fore edges. The dust jacket is printed green red and black on cream stock with a distinctly Art Deco style illustration and print on the front face and spine. The rear face advertises Rudyard Kiplings Books for Boys and Girls with a further illustration of how the elephant got its trunk with a blurb for Stalky & Co. on the rear flap and favorable reviews of Kim on the front flap. Condition is near fine a very good dust jacket. The navy cloth binding is square clean bright and tight with sharp corners and only trivial wear to extremities. The contents are immaculately clean with no previous ownership marks or spotting and uniform unfaded blue topstain. The illustrated dust jacket shows light overall soiling but is bright and striking nonetheless. We note light wear to extremities fractional chipping to the lower spine and upper front face and a neatly price-clipped upper front flap the original "2.50" price replaced with an ink-stamped 3.00. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable archival clear cover. Among Kiplings tales of India perhaps none eclipses his masterpiece Kim. Originally published in 1901 this is the story of Kimball OHara an Irish orphan who goes from begging on the streets of Lahore to being a spy for the British simultaneously taking a spiritual journey that conflicts with his new obligations to the Empire. Kims context is the Great Game that pitted Russia against Britain for control of the subcontinent in the wake of the Second Afghan War 1878-1880. Kiplings career as a journalist afforded him travel to the major cities of India a breadth of geographic experience with the subcontinent that informs the sweeping settings of Kim. The British first edition of Kim followed serialization in the United States in McClures Magazine from December 1900 through October 1901 and in Britain in Cassells Magazine from January through November 1901. Chosen by the New York Public Library as one of its books of the century Kim was Kiplings final book about India and was called magical upon publication. When the orphaned Kimball OHara joins a Buddhist lama in his search for the River of Healing the reader not only beholds a kaleidoscope of people and settings through Kims eyes but also feels the native social and spiritual currents of India moving beneath the political veneer of imperial ambitions and authority. Bengali critic Niraud Chaudhuri called Kim the finest novel in the English language dealing with an Indian theme Books of the Century p. 68. Kim was also included in the Modern Librarys list of the 100 best English-language books of the 20th century. Joseph Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 was an English poet short-story writer and novelist chiefly remembered for his celebration of British imperialism stories and poems of British India and his tales for children. Despite this reputation Kiplings extraordinary body of work eludes all labels in its range and variety Kipling's work is not only of the highest artistic excellence it is deeply humane and fully expresses the sense of one of his favourite texts: Praised be Allah for the diversity of his creatures. ODNB Kipling was in his twenties when his stories of Anglo-Indian life made him a literary celebrity and he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1907.

Doubleday & Company, Inc. hardcover
