Zola Emile; Vizetelly Ernest Alfred Translator Land Preface
Money - The Rougon-Macquart
New York - Berlin: Mondial 2007. 332 Pages. No marks or stamps. Interior text pages are flawless. After a disastrous speculation Aristide Saccard was forced to sell his mansion. Chance made him acquainted with Hamelin an engineer whose residence in the East had suggested to him financial schemes which at once attracted the attention of Saccard. With a view to financing these schemes the Universal Bank was formed and by force of advertising became immediately successful. Emboldened by success Saccard launched into wild speculation. Judged by popularity this title is at the top. This is not surprising as the book deals with a subject of great interest to everyone. And with regard to this English version it is well timed. Emile Zola was born in Paris in 1840 the son of a Venetian engineer. He grew up in Aix-en-Provence and after an undistinguished school career and a brief period of dire poverty in Paris Zola joined the newly founded publishing firm of Hachette which he left in 1866 to live by his pen. He had already published a novel and his first collection of short stories. Other novels and stories followed until in 1871 Zola published the first volume of his Rougon-Macquart series in which he illustrates the influence of heredity and environment on a wide range of characters. It was not until 1877 that his novel L 'Assommoir a study of alcoholism in the working classes brought him wealth and fame. The last of the Rougon-Macquart series appeared in 1893. First Mondial Edition. Trade Paperback. As New. 5 1/2" x 8 1/2". Mondial Paperback

Zola Emile; Nelson Brian Translator and Intrroduction
The Belly of Paris
Oxford - New York: Oxford University Press 2008. 287 Pages. No defects noted to this As New book with flawless interior text pages. In this book Florent Quenu is unjustly deported to Devil's Island following Louis-Napoleon's coup-d'etat in December 1851. He escapes and returns to Paris. He finds the city changed beyond recognition. The old Marche des Innocents has been knocked down as part of Haussmann's grand program of urban reconstruction to make way for Les Halles the spectacular new food markets. Disgusted by a bourgeois society whose devotion to food is inseparable from its devotion to the Government Florent attempts an insurrection. Les Halles apocalyptic and destructive play an active role in Emile Zola's picture of a world in which food and the injustice of society are inextricably linked. This book is the third of hxis famous series of twenty novels Les Rougon-Macquart. It introduces the painter Claude Lantier and in its satirical representation of the bourgeoisie and capitalism complements Zola's other great novels of social conflict and urban poverty. Zola Emile; Salotto Eleanor Introduction; Vizetelly EA. Translator E. A.
The Ladies' Paradise
New York: Barnes & Noble 2006. 458 Pages Plus Five-Page listing Fiction and Literature in the The Barnes & Noble Library of Essential Reading. An As New book with no defects and probably never read. Interior text pages are flawless. This book catapults the reader into the present-day world of consumer culture and marketing. It seems as if the store owners of today's Bloomingdale's Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus all read The Ladies' Paradise and made it their bible for creating desire for consumer goods. Emile Zola documents how the first department stores in nineteenth-century Paris made shopping into a religion while he simultaneously woos readers with his gripping love story between the enterprising store owner Octave Mourer and the rags-to-riches heroine Denise Baudu. Emile Zola born in Paris in 1840 was raised in Aix en Provence in conditions of extreme poverty following the death of his hither in 1847. In 1865 he decided to support himself by writing alone. The Ladies' Paradise is the eleventh novel in a series of twenty novels under the generic title The Rougon-Macquarts: the Natural and Social History of a Family Under the Second Empire. In this series published between 1871 and 1893 Zola scientifically documents the effects of heredity and environment on the Rougon-Marquart family. Contemporary interest in cultural studies and consumer culture has sparked a renewed interest in Zola's work and in particular The Ladies' Paradise. Our current endless appetite for reality television shows parallels Zola's efforts in the latter part of nineteenth century to document reality and to make the everyday world an apt subject for the novel. While in The Ladies' Paradise Zola documents social realism he also creates a prose poem to the modernist city in all of its bustle and splendor. And at the center of this vast city is the department store which encapsulates the wonders and desires afforded by commerce. . First Printing. Trade Paperback. As New. Illus. by May Stacey - Cover Design. 5 1/2" X 8". Barnes & Noble Paperback
