This bound volume contains the first four of the only six numbers of the Journal. 'So the New Naturalist Journal became another of the might-have-beens of the series. There would be nothing to compare with it for many years to come, not at any rate until the appearance of 'Animals' magazine in the 1960s; and not until the launch of 'British Wildlife' in 1989 has any journal bridged the divide between scientist and field naturalist half so effectively' (Marren). Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature: No. 7170. In Fog's Journal an early news sheet there was a call by way of historical allegory for the assassination of Robert Walpole and others. Walpole the Earl of Oxford 1676-1745 was really Britain's first Prime Minister. He governed through a time of relative peace and prosperity but not without controversies. In 1733 Walpole's influence received a profound blow. Serious frauds relating to excise duties were uncovered. He proposed to check smuggling and avoid fraud by levying the full tax on wine and tobacco not at their point of sale but upon their first removal from the various warehouses. "His opponents fastened on these proposals with irresistible force and so serious an agitation stirred the country that the ministerial measure was dropped amid general rejoicing. Several of his most active antagonists were dismissed from office or deprived of their regiments but their spirits remained unquenched." - William Prideaux Courtney in the 11th Ed. EB. Though intended as a defense of Walpole this pamphlet does not say that Fog's Weekly Journal was wrong to attack him - only that they overstepped their bounds by calling for his assassination. Juggling the power of political protest in the public press with freedom of speech was always a tricky affair. Responding in 1734 to the concerns of Queen Caroline over these and other controversies Walpole said not to worry too much about it: "Madame there are 50000 men slain in Europe and not one Englishman." FONDATEUR : Paul Lévy (1886-1959) - Journaliste et patron de presse.Avant la Première Guerre mondiale, il fut journaliste et polémiste à L'Aurore de Georges Clemenceau, au Journal et à L'Intransigeant. Fonda en 1918 l'hebdomadaire Aux Écoutes, qui lui survécut jusqu'en 1969. Cet hebdomadaire était anti-allemand et fermement opposé à la politique pacifiste d'Aristide Briand.En 1933, son journal fit même campagne pour une guerre préventive contre l'Allemagne que venait de conquérir Hitler.Dirigea également le quotidien anti-allemand Le Rempart.Interdit de gestion par le statut des Juifs du Régime de Vichy, il cède la direction de son journal à un ami proche, l'écrivain nationaliste Maurice Blanchot, et se cache avec sa femme dans le Sud de la France.Paul Lévy a été l'un des rares à ouvrir les colonnes de son journal après la Seconde Guerre mondiale à l'écrivain antisémite Louis-Ferdinand Céline, longtemps en fuite à l'étranger avant de revenir en France, avec lequel il entretenait une longue correspondance.
