‎REMARKS ON FOG'S JOURNAL OF FEBRUARY 10. 1732/3 I.E. 1733. Exciting the People to Assassination.‎

‎Printed for J. Wilford London : 1733 1733 11 leaves of 12 - No half title if one was ever present. 21 cm. Modestly soiled. Leather backed cloth boards. Goldsmiths'-Kress Library of Economic Literature: No. 7170. In Fog's Journal an early news sheet there was a call by way of historical allegory for the assassination of Robert Walpole and others. Walpole the Earl of Oxford 1676-1745 was really Britain's first Prime Minister. He governed through a time of relative peace and prosperity but not without controversies. In 1733 Walpole's influence received a profound blow. Serious frauds relating to excise duties were uncovered. He proposed to check smuggling and avoid fraud by levying the full tax on wine and tobacco not at their point of sale but upon their first removal from the various warehouses. "His opponents fastened on these proposals with irresistible force and so serious an agitation stirred the country that the ministerial measure was dropped amid general rejoicing. Several of his most active antagonists were dismissed from office or deprived of their regiments but their spirits remained unquenched." - William Prideaux Courtney in the 11th Ed. EB. Though intended as a defense of Walpole this pamphlet does not say that Fog's Weekly Journal was wrong to attack him - only that they overstepped their bounds by calling for his assassination. Juggling the power of political protest in the public press with freedom of speech was always a tricky affair. Responding in 1734 to the concerns of Queen Caroline over these and other controversies Walpole said not to worry too much about it: "Madame there are 50000 men slain in Europe and not one Englishman." ‎L'ÉCHO DE LA JEUNE FRANCE : journal des progrès par le christianisme PUIS journal de réforme sociale par le christianisme : Tome 1er, 1re livraison (avril 1833) au Tome 3 : décembre 1835] ..... Collaboration de BALZAC qui publie dans le premier numéro l'ÉDITION PREORIGINALE de "LA DUCHESSE DE LANGEAIS" sous le titre de "Histoire des Treize, II. Ne touchez pas à la hache"(la préface de l'histoire des treize et le 1er épisode, intitulé : Ferragus chef des Dévorants ont paru dans le Tome XLVIII (Mars 1833) de la Revue de Paris)[Balzac rompt avec Pichot au moment de la publication de la dernière partie de Ferragus et donne le début du nouveau roman au journal légitimiste L'Echo de la Jeune France, où paraissent, fin avril et début mai 1833, le premier chapitre et le début du deuxième. A ce stade le roman devait comporter trois chapitres, mais Balzac, brouillé avec le directeur de L'Echo qui avait publié le deuxième chapitre sans le « bon à tirer » de l'auteur, abandonne son texte et consacre plusieurs mois à la rédaction d'Eugénie Grandet. C'est en novembre et surtout à Noël auprès de Mme Hanska en Suisse qu'il reprend ce deuxième épisode et l'achève en mars 1834] ; BONALD (Progrès de la civilisation par les réformes) ; CRETINEAU-JOLY, CHATEAUBRIAND (Danger et inutilité de l'athéisme), BALLANCHE (De la formule générale de l'histoire de tous les peuples), GOBINEAU, LAMARTINE, WALSH etc ........ Tome 1 1833-1834 tiré à 10 000ex, Tome 2 1834-1835 tiré à 15 000ex, Tome 3 1835-1836 (tirage non indiqué, probablement moindre car la fin de publication date de 1837). Véritable pièce d'histoire politique. Cette revue, notamment intéressée à la critique littéraire, critique d'art, récits de voyages, critiques des évènements de son temps, publication de ce qui serait aujourd'hui appelé des éditoriaux... A attiré l'attention des plus grands auteurs comme Balzac, ou encore Chateaubriand, sensible aux idées des légitimistes. Chateaubriand avait en effet prononcé un discours contre l'avènement sur le trône de Louis Philippe, après les Trois Glorieuses. Des textes de Chateaubriand, spécialement écrits pour la revue, y sont publiés. Il se retrouvait alors parfaitement dans la critique contre l'orléanisme. L'écho de la Jeune de France se voulait un contrepoids à la toute nouvelle Monarchie de Juillet et un soutien à Henri V qui aurait pu succéder à Charles X en 1830. Au fil des pages, l'esprit politique, plus ou moins directement exprimé, se devine aisément (croustillante critique acerbe de la fête des trois jours, qui célèbre la fin de la monarchie de Charles X, dans le tome 1). L'écho de la Jeune France a symbolisé toute l'idéologie d'une certaine branche de la population française à cette époque. Elle a eu jusqu'à 10 000 abonnés ........ Bons Exemplaires ........... RARE............en bon état malgré les défauts de reliure du Volume I à restaurer (good condition). en bon état‎

COLLECTION COMPLETE DU N° 1 (5 FEVRIER 1898) N° AU N° 85 (16 SEPTEMBRE 1899). LE FIFRE du N° 1 première année 23 février 1889 au N° 15 1er juin 1889. COLLECTION COMPLETE. Caran d'Ache et Forain collaboraient depuis plusieurs années au Figaro, journal longtemps ouvert aux articles de Zola en faveur de Dreyfus avant de devoir reculer face au mécontentement de son lectorat. Malgré ce revirement, la ligne éditoriale du journal reste modérée, ne permettant pas à ses dessinateurs de violentes charges anti -dreyfusardes et antisémites. Psst...! est un journal hebdomadaire satirique français. Paru en 1898-1899, il contient des caricatures et dessins antidreyfusards et antisémites de Caran d'Ache et de Forain. Le titre évoque un sifflement discret destiné à attirer l'attention. Sa ponctuation est une référence évidente au J'accuse…! de Zola publié dans l’Aurore du 13 janvier 1898. En réponse au manifeste dreyfusard du célèbre écrivain, les deux dessinateurs de Psst...! accablent les défenseurs de Dreyfus et représentent ceux-ci comme les instruments d'un complot ourdi contre la France et son armée par les juifs et les puissances étrangères. Le lancement de l'hebdomadaire est notamment salué par Édouard Drumont dans la Libre Parole du 7 février. Dans le numéro de la veille, Forain était interviewé par Gaston Méry au sujet de la fondation de Psst...! : « [Caran d'Ache et moi avons obéi] au sentiment de dégoût et d'indignation que nous inspirent les odieuses manœuvres du Syndicat. Je ne suis pas un Antisémite, dans le sens strict du mot; mais, il n'y a pas à dire le contraire, ce sont les Juifs qui font toute cette sale besogne. [...] Un soir, nous causions de cela, Caran d'Ache et moi. "Il faut faire quelque chose, lui dis-je ; ils nous embêtent à la fin. C'est devenu un devoir pour chacun de combattre tous ces cosmopolites avec les moyens dont il dispose." Et, tout de suite, Caran d'Ache a pensé comme moi. Le lendemain, nous étions chez l'éditeur. Et voilà ! ». Les dreyfusards répliquent peu de temps après : dès le 17 février, Stock commence la publication du Sifflet sous la direction d'Achille Steens. De format similaire à celui de Psst...!, le Sifflet contient des dessins d'Édouard Couturier, de Félix Vallotton, d'Hermann-Paul, de Louis Chevalier et d'Henri-Gabriel Ibels. LE FIFRE : Collection complète de ce journal satirique créé et illustré par le peintre et illustrateur de presse Jean-Louis FORAIN -1852-1931), comprenant 15 numéros publiés entre le 23 février et le 1er juin 1889. L'artiste présentait ainsi son numéro en page 2 du premier numéro : " Conter la vie de tous les jours, montrer les ridicules de certaines douleurs, la tristesse de bien des joies, et constater rudement quelquefois par quelle hypocrite façon le Vice tend à se manifester en nous..." Ont collaboré à ce journal, en dehors de Jean-Louis Forain, Armand Silvestre, Emile André, Jean Richepin, Paul Messon, Paul Hervieu, Jacques Le Lorrain, etc.‎

Durch die Einnahme von Contergan kam es zu einer Häufung von schweren Fehlbildungen (Dysmelien) oder gar dem Fehlen (Amelie) von Gliedmaßen und Organen bei Neugeborenen. A multidisciplinary approach to any social problem is necessary, but reliance on quantification of any and all types and sources of treatment covers confusion and uncertainty. Uncharacteristically and regrettably, Dr. Fox also impugns the motivation of alcoholics who seek treatment. ---- Keith S. Ditman (U.S.) DO WE HAVE A SPECIFIC TREAT-MENT FOR ALCOHOLISM? ---- Alcoholism is still a poorly understood and underestimated problem. It is more prevalent than generally realized, and alcoholics usually have problems other than excessive drink-ing. A multidisciplinary approach to treatment has been found most effective because the needs of the alcoholic change as treatment progresses, because of the complexity of the Illness, and because of the lack of a specific treatment for the condition. ---- L. Takeo Doi (Japan) IS PSYCHIATRY NOT SCIENTIFIC? ---- Leston Havens's application to psychiatry of an approach de-signed for art criticism creates an effect of esthetic pleasure for the reader. However, psychiatry remains a true science even though its application is an art. Furthermore, national styles and preoccupations in psychiatric theory are enriching and complementary, rather than contradictory. Finally, Havens is mislead into a false perfectionism by failure to accept a basic insight of psychoanalysis-that we are all potentially psychologically ill. ---- George Mora (U.S.) A REFRESHING INGENUITY ---- Dr. Havens's discussion is original in its return to primary sources, and he succeeds in crystallizing concepts which many have felt all along. Dr. Havens's assumption of progress in psychiatry is valid for organized psychiatry in the past 150 years, but the period immediately before that was especially benighted. Despite his respect for biological and social factors, Dr. Havens's essay focuses on the medical model of mental disease in a way that indicates that the inner core of psychiatric developments can best be evaluated by a practicing psychiatrist. ---- (u.v.v.a.)‎
