Prima edizione. Rarissimo fascicolo in ottimo stato di conservazione con rarissime fioriture e normali abrasioni non deturpanti alle pieghe del giornale. Timbro alla prima pagina. Composta nell’agosto del 1902 e pubblicata per la prima volta in volume nel dicembre del 1903 dall’editore Treves all’interno di «Alcyone» - terzo libro del ciclo «Laudi del cielo del mare della terra e degli eroi» - «La morte del cervo» fu pubblicata in anteprima sulla prima pagina di «Il Marzocco» del 31 maggio 1903. Fondato a Firenze nel 1896 e attivo fino al 1932, il settimanale letterario «Il Marzocco» si propose come luogo di difesa della “pura bellezza”, in perfetta sintonia con i principi dell’estetismo nazionale ed europeo. Non a caso, dunque, D’Annunzio non fu soltanto un fedele collaboratore della rivista ma anche uno degli estensori del suo manifesto, nonché l’ideatore del nome (voluto in omaggio al leone simbolo della Repubblica fiorentina).

Prima edizione. Rarissimo fascicolo in ottimo stato di conservazione, leggermente brunito, con lievissime e limitate mancanze al lato inferiore del primo foglio e normali, non deturpanti abrasioni lungo le pieghe del giornale. Da segnalare 4 sottolineature a matita blu, probabilmente coeve, al primo foglio. Pubblicata per la prima volta in volume dall’editore Treves nel dicembre del 1903 all’interno di «Elettra» - secondo libro delle dannunziane «Laudi del cielo del mare della terra e degli eroi» -, «Per la morte di Giovanni Segantini» inaugura nel cuore del poema - subito dopo i 3 canti “della morte e della gloria” - la sezione dominata dagli epicedi «Per la morte di Giuseppe Verdi», «Nel primo centenario della nascita di Vincenzo Bellini», «Nel primo centenario della nascita di Victor Hugo», «Per la morte di un distruttore F. N. XXV Agosto MCM» (dedicata a Nietzsche), «Per la morte di un capolavoro» e testimonia tutta l’ammirazione di D’Annunzio per la “dolce e rude” anima del grande pittore trentino «che cercava una patria nelle altezze più nude sempre più solitaria». Ma le vibranti e commosse parole del poeta tese a evocare la potenza maestosa, pura e al tempo stesso dolente dei monti tanto cari a Segantini così da evocare e fermare per sempre lo spirito dell’artista avevano già visto la luce nei giorni immediatamente successivi all’improvvisa morte del maestro divisionista e simbolista, avvenuta il 28 settembre 1899. La loro prima pubblicazione, infatti, risale all’8 ottobre dello stesso anno quando la rivista letteraria «Il Marzocco» - settimanale fondato a Firenze nel 1896 a cui lo stesso D’Annunzio aveva dato il nome in omaggio al leone simbolo della Repubblica fiorentina - dedicò l’intero numero 36 alla scomparsa del pittore. Delle quattro grandi pagine di cui si componeva il periodico tre accolsero contributi firmati dal direttore della rivista Enrico Corradini, da Angelo Conti, da Domenico Tumiati e da Vittore Grubicy, mentre la prima ospitò il solenne canto celebrativo del Vate, già posto sotto il titolo «Laudi del cielo del mare della terra e degli eroi». Rarissimo fascicolo, da considerarsi a tutti gli effetti una prima edizione. Cfr. F.
