‎Le "Journal des voyages et des aventures de terre et de mer" est un hebdomadaire créé à Paris en juillet 1877 et disparu en 1949. Il mêlait des récits réalistes de voyage et d'exploration à des fictions rocambolesques, le tout abondamment illustré, souvent de manière fantastique. Une première série va du n°1 de juillet 1877 au n° 1012 du 29 novembre 1896 ; la deuxième série débute avec le n°1 du 6 décembre 1896. Elle durera jusqu'en 1915. Les quatre volumes de cette importante revue de voyages proposés ici contiennent les n° 261 (1er décembre 1901) à 413 (30 octobre 1904) de la deuxième série (153 numéros). L’ensemble est très copieusement illustré. — « Le goût de plus en plus marqué en France pour les récits de voyages et d’aventures est un des caractères de notre époque (...). L’éditeur du "Journal des Voyages" a donc voulu faire un journal que satisfît à la fois à ce goût et à la nécessité de connaître ce globe sur lequel nous nous agitons, et qui fût en même temps accessible à tout le monde, aussi bien par les conditions matérielles que par l’esprit qui y régnera (…). Les matières si variées comprises dans le vaste champ de la géographie et des voyages seront tour à tour abordées dans le "Journal des Voyages" dont chaque numéro, de seize grandes pages in-folio, contiendra toujours une grande relation de voyage, une aventure de terre ou de mer (récit de naufrage ou de chasse périlleuse, etc.), un article sur l’histoire des voyages, un attachant roman d’aventures, la géographie d’un département de la France, un chapitre du Tour de la Terre en quatre-vingts récits, une revue des plus récents ouvrages de voyages et enfin une chronique des voyages et de la géographie » (extrait de l’Avis de l’éditeur).‎

It once belonged to the huge private library of Dr. Lipke Blijdeley Holthuis (1921-2008). Holthuis was one of the foremost prominent carcinologists of his time and his library was the largest and best one in private hands. His library is now in Naturalis (National Natural History Museum of Leiden, the Netherlands). His books remain complete there, only a few periodicals were not included; this is one of them.‎
