‎'Boulogne s/m June 18 1883'. See his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp 4to. On first leaf of bifolium. Forty-three lines of neat text. In fair condition lightly aged and worn with a few small closed tears. The author 'Sir' is unnamed but is presumably the 'Editor' referred to in the text. Signed 'Wm Ballantine'. By recipient at head of first page: 'Letter from Mr Sergeant sic Ballantine / United Club -'. Begins: 'I have to acknowledge the receipt of what purports to be a specimen of a new family paper called "The English Resident" & which it is supposed will supply a want existing especially amongs the English sojourners of all descriptions in different French places of resort. & notably at this one of the most favourable watering places of the British people - Those who favoured me with the number in question were aware that for many years of a busy life there has rarely been a year during which upon more than one occasion I have not sought health and recreation uponits shores. I have had abundant opportunities of appreciating its advantages & recognizing its wants and I welcome very heartily the probabl advent of a newspaper which appears to be conducted upon principles likely to render it a very popular addition.' The second half of the letter is in much the same highfallutin tone see reference to 'the freedom and elasticity of Boulogne air' with Ballantine feeling that is is 'impertinent on my part to offer hints to an Editor so evidently experienced as the Gentleman who has supplied news in the number that I have had the pleasure of reading'. I refer to the Public Meeting to be held in the Public Rooms in Jarratt Street on Friday evening next at 7 o'clock.' He complains that 'Mr. Greathead simply read last two words underlined the Notice this morning; and unluckily he did this while the boxes were being circulated for the Chapel Fund Collection' and that 'the reading of it would if heard at all make little impression'. He has invited the 'Revd. Mr. Macguire of Clerkenwell' to be his guest and his lecture will be on 'Romanism its fall and decline abroad and its rise and progress at home'. Renovation.' and 'Contribution Fonciere sur les Proprietes Baties' followed by 'Nouvelles - Politique' 'Baviere' 'Angleterre' and 'Empire-Francais' and ending with 'Varietes'. The item is accoumpanied by a long letter 2pp. foolscap 8vo in English from 'Frank Kintenbrawer' to 'Elizabeth-Ann' dated from Utrecht 27 November 1966 in which he states of this item: 'I enclose something I have been looking for to send you to thank you for all the things you did to me: an old "gazette" - with the hated "tax stamp" - from the time of the French occupation 1806-1813. It serves a double purpose: with the help of the French translation which was obligatory at the time you will be able to appreciate Dutch journalism be it in an antiquated version and I hope this old newspaper will remind you of the "nobile officium" of journalism now you're in this PR "gimmick".' Some pages are 'off white'. A team of journalists from the Hiroshima-based newspaper interview victims exposed to radiation investigate environmental dangers and appeal for an end to nuclear testing. The Chugoku Shimbun "Midland News" is a Japanese local daily newspaper based in Hiroshima. It serves the Ch goku region of Japan with a market share in Hiroshima Yamaguchi Shimane Okayama and Tottori Prefectures. The newspaper publishes morning and evening editions. The morning paper has a daily circulation of 646900. And the evening paper has a daily circulation of 40600. The Daily Chugoku was established on May 5 1892 in Hiroshima and was founded by its editor Saburo Yamamoto. In 1908 the newspaper changed its name to The Chugoku Shimbun which translates to "Middle Country Newspaper" geographically Hiroshima is near the center of the Japanese archipelago. The A-Bomb on August 6 1945 killed 113 newspaper employees and destroyed the building and equipment. The newspaper restarted publishing on August 9 by asking other newspapers for help. Derived from a Publisher's Weekly article: A year-long study led a team of Japanese journalists to conclude that nuclear testing refining and power plants continue to contaminate human beings and create more hibakusha radiation victims. First published as a series of articles in a Hiroshima newspaper in 1989-1990 this impressive in-depth report details nuclear contamination's appalling toll: the still-lethal effects of the 1986 Chernobyl disaster; the destruction British French and Japanese nuclear tests and refineries have caused in the South Pacific; the danger the ongoing development of nuclear power for ``peaceful'' uses poses to the planet and its inhabitants. The authors cite New Mexican and Nambian villagers whose homes were irradiated by uranium mining and fishermen in India who became ill as a result of their proximity to the nation's ``radiation coast'' on the Arabian Sea and to the Tarapur Nuclear Complex reputedly ``the dirtiest nuclear facility in the world.'' The original souvenir edition was issued on December 15 1939 Premiere Day of "Gone With The Wind". Every Ad and Every Article Pertains to "Gone With The Wind". The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is the only major daily newspaper in the metropolitan area of Atlanta Georgia. It is the flagship publication of Cox Enterprises. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is the result of the merger between The Atlanta Journal and The Atlanta Constitution. The two staffs were combined in 1982. Separate publication of the morning Constitution and the afternoon Journal ended in 2001 in favor of a single morning paper under the Journal-Constitution name. The Atlanta Journal was established in 1883. Founder E. F. Hoge sold the paper to Atlanta lawyer Hoke Smith in 1887. After the Journal supported presidential candidate Grover Cleveland in the 1892 election Smith was named as Secretary of the Interior by the victorious Cleveland. Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Margaret Mitchell worked for the Journal from 1922 to 1926. Important for the development of her 1936 Gone With the Wind were the series of profiles of prominent Georgia Civil War generals she wrote for The Atlanta Journal's Sunday magazine the research for which scholars believe led her to her work on the novel. The Journal carried the motto "Covers Dixie like the Dew". About 300000 people came out in Atlanta for the film's premiere at the Loew's Grand Theatre on December 15 1939. It was the climax of three days of festivities hosted by Mayor William B. Hartsfield which included a parade of limousines featuring stars from the film receptions thousands of Confederate flags and a costume ball. Eurith D. Rivers the governor of Georgia declared December 15 a state holiday. An estimated 300000 Atlanta residents and visitors lined the streets for seven miles to view the procession of limousines that brought stars from the airport. Only Leslie Howard and Victor Fleming chose not to attend: Howard had returned to England due to the outbreak of World War II and Fleming had fallen out with Selznick and declined to attend any of the premieres. Hattie McDaniel was also absent as she and the other black cast members were prevented from attending the premiere due to Georgia's Jim Crow laws which kept them from sitting with their white colleagues. Upon learning that McDaniel had been barred from the premiere Clark Gable threatened to boycott the event but McDaniel persuaded him to attend. President Jimmy Carter later recalled it as "the biggest event to happen in the South in my lifetime". Gone with the Wind is a 1939 American epic historical romance film adapted from the 1936 novel by Margaret Mitchell. The film was produced by David O. Selznick of Selznick International Pictures and directed by Victor Fleming. Set in the American South against the backdrop of the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era the film tells the story of Scarlett O'Hara Vivien Leigh the strong-willed daughter of a Georgia plantation owner following her romantic pursuit of Ashley Wilkes Leslie Howard who is married to his cousin Melanie Hamilton Olivia de Havilland and her subsequent marriage to Rhett Butler Clark Gable. It received positive reviews upon its release in December 1939. The casting was widely praised. At the 12th Academy Awards it received ten Academy Awards eight competitive two honorary from thirteen nominations including wins for Best Picture Best Director Fleming Best Adapted Screenplay posthumously awarded to Sidney Howard Best Actress Leigh and Best Supporting Actress Hattie McDaniel becoming the first African American to win an Academy Award. It set records for the total number of wins and nominations at the time. Gone with the Wind was immensely popular when first released. It became the highest-earning film made up to that point and held the record for over a quarter of a century. When adjusted for monetary inflation it is still the highest-grossing film in history. It was re-released periodically throughout the 20th century and became ingrained in popular culture. The film has been credited with triggering changes in the way in which African Americans were depicted cinematically.
