‎[Art Biography] Arnold, Bruce‎

‎Jack Yeats.‎

‎
Art Biography Arnold Bruce. Jack Yeats. New Haven: Yale University Press 1998. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine unread copy in a Fine dust jacket. Jack Yeats 1871-1957 stands as a giant figure in Irish twentieth-century art. An isolated artist throughout his life Yeats dominated solely through the talent magic and inventiveness of his painting. His vision and his standing as well as many critical judgments during the forty years since his death have provoked controversies which Bruce Arnold confronts in this major biography. The author tells the full story of the artist's life and analyzes his prodigious output. This included not only some one thousand oil paintings and vast numbers of illustrations comic cartoons drawings and watercolors but also seven novels and nine plays. An innately original man Yeats eschewed all movements took no pupils taught only by example. Yet he exerted a fundamental and fascinating influence on Irish culture during his long and diverse life. Based on extensive research in primary sources this generously illustrated book describes the life of Jack Yeats son of the portrait painter John Butler Yeats and younger brother of the poet William Butler Yeats.
Yale University Press, hardcover‎

‎Becoming O'Keeffe: The Early Years.‎

‎
New York:: Abbeyville Press 1991. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine copy in a Fine dust jacket. By examining the period from 1915 to 1930 with flashbacks to O'Keeffe's little-known studies in Chicago and New York Becoming O'Keeffe casts a clear new light on how a fiercely independent art student became the artist Georgia O'Keeffe. The careful scholarship and persuasive arguments of Dr. Peters's textsupported with forceful clarity by her choice and juxtapositions of imagesreveal not only unexpected complexity in O'Keeffe's own work but also previously unexplored connections with work by her colleagues particularly her dealer and husband Alfred Stieglitz and the photographers Paul Strand Charles Sheeler and Edward Steichen.
Abbeyville Press, hardcover‎

‎Jean Cocteau: A Life.‎

‎
Author Biography Arnaud Claude. Jean Cocteau: A Life. New Haven: Yale University Press 2016. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fine dust jacket. Unevenly respected easily hated almost always suspected of being inferior to his reputation Jean Cocteau has often been thought of as a jack-of-all-trades master of none. In this landmark biography Claude Arnaud thoroughly contests this characterization as he celebrates Cocteau's "fragile genius—a combination almost unlivable in art" but in his case so fertile. Arnaud narrates the life of this legendary French novelist poet playwright director filmmaker and designer who as a young man pretended to be a sort of a god but who died as a humble and exhausted craftsman. The author examines the nature of Cocteau's chameleon-like genius his romantic attachments his controversial politics and his intimate involvement with many of the century's leading artistic lights including Picasso Proust Hemingway Stravinsky and Tennessee Williams. 1019 pages with photographs.
Yale University Press, hardcover‎

‎[BIOGRAPHIES OF WORLD FIGURES].‎

‎世界歴史譚. Sekai rekishidan.‎

‎Hakubunkan. 博文館. 1902. 6 volumes from a series of 35 each standing on its own. Black and white illustrations pagination various with all well over 100 pages in length. Original coloured pictorial wrappers chipped with a little loss on spines some staining around staples good copies. A series of biographies of famous figures in world history aimed at a Japanese juvenile audience. These illustrated volumes are biographies of Demosthenes no 2 of the series Hannibal no. 5 Garibaldi no. 11 President Garfield no. 19 General Grant no. 29 and King Charles XII of Sweden no. 34. The books by Japanese authors give an interesting insight into the European and American figures who were regarded as historically significant and as moral exemplars in the Meiji Era. The series was published at a time when Japanese education was still strongly influenced by western models although a new wave of more nationalist education was just beginning to take hold. President James Garfield for example is rather surprisingly perhaps described as having been not merely a US President but also one of the great figures of modern times 'in terms of his opinions an ideal hero of civilization'. Reflecting the intended audience this and some other works in the series devote a lot of space to the childhood and early lives of their subjects emphasising their diligence hard work idealism and patriotism. .
