‎Rücken leicht ausgebleicht. - Heute ist sie fast vergessen, die Historikerin und Dichterin Ricarda Huch (1864-1947). Zu ihrer Zeit war sie berühmt und vielgeachtet, saß neben Thomas Mann und Alfred Döblin als erste Frau in der Berliner Akademie der Künste, ihre Werke standen in den Bücherschränken der bürgerlichen Gesellschaft. Stolz und mutig, wie sie war, ließ sie sich nach 1933 nicht von den Nationalsozialisten vereinnahmen, hielt ihre Familie im Oberen Philosophenweg in Jena mit Schreiben über Wasser und wurde stundenlang wegen Vergehens gegen das Heimtückegesetz verhört. Als es keine Bomben und keine Nazis mehr gab, hatte sie sich verändert: Achtzigjährig entschloß sich Ricarda Huch, ein Gedenkbuch zum Widerstand zu schreiben. Daß das neue Regime der SBZ ihr huldigte, daß sie 1947 als Ehrenpräsidentin den Ersten Deutschen Schriftstel-lerkongreß eröffnete, hielt sie auch aus familiären Gründen nicht davon ab, jenes Land auf abenteuerliche Weise zu verlassen. Seit langem bewandert in Leben und Werk, begleitet Barbara Bronnen als Schriftstellerin behutsam und neugierig Ricarda Huch durch ihre letzten Lebensjahre, die voll Entbehrung, Erfahrung und Erneuerungwaren. All page edges yellow. "From the Lorenzo Press of E. Bronson." Vol. 3 has vol. 4 title page with imprint stating "Published by Edward Earle corner of Chesnut and Fourth Streets." Title pages state sold by Mathew Carey in Philadelphia and a variety of other booksellers in other cities in the United States. Small oval paper label in first compartment of each volume with very faint handwritten number. Bookplate on front fixed endpaper of each volume indicating that the volumes were given to the Belles Lettres Society of Dickinson College in 1851 by Mrs. Judge Reed Carlisle Pa. No other library markings. Vol. 1 contains as bound: issues of Jan. 1809 and Jan. and Feb. 1810 with no volume title page. Vol. 2 contains as bound vol. 2 title page table of contents index and: April July Sept. Oct. Nov. and Dec. 1809. Vol. 3 contains title page table of contents and index for vol. 3 and: July Aug. Sept. Oct. Nov. and Dec. 1810. Only volumes 1-8 were published from 1809 to 1812. The printer Enos Bronson 1774-1823 published the Gazette of the United States from 1801 to 1804; with Elihu Chauncey he published The United States' Gazette for the Country from 1804 to 1818. Select Reviews consisted primarily of reviews of recently published material taken from other publications. It also contained some original material including an obituary of Miriam Gratz poetry and advertisements for American and British publishers. ‎* * Marcel Broodthaers (* 28. Januar 1924 in Saint-Gilles/Sint-Gillis, Brüssel; ? 28. Januar 1976 in Köln) war ein belgischer Künstler. Broodthaers lernte nach eigener Aussage als junger Autor und Poet Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs René Magritte kennen und fand Anschluss an die Gruppe der belgischen Surrealisten (Groupe Surréaliste révolutionaire). 1945 trat Broodthaers mit ersten Gedichten an die Öffentlichkeit, die in der Tradition von Symbolismus und Surrealismus standen. 1947 unterzeichnete er das von Surrealisten verfasste Manifest ?Pas de quartiers dans la révolution?. 1957 erschien ein Gedichtband. Im selben Jahr entstand sein erster Film, ?La Clef de l?Horloge ? Un poème cinématographique en l?honneur de Kurt Schwitters?. Broodthaers arbeitete bis in die frühen 1960er Jahre als Autor von Gedichten und Essays u. a. in Paris, die von den ästhetischen Positionen Rimbauds und Mallarmés kommend diese aktualisieren und weiterdenken. Parallel findet er Kontakt zu Vertretern des ?Nouveau Réalisme?, geht allerdings auch diesen gegenüber eigene Wege. 1964 entschied er sich, Künstler zu sein und machte seine erste Ausstellung mit Objekten aus Muscheln und Eierschalen. Berühmt ist seine Geste, Bände seines Gedichtbandes ?Pense Bête? 1964 in eine Skulptur zu verwandeln, indem er sie mit Gips umhüllte und derart unlesbar machte. Für Marcel Broodthaers waren unter anderem auch der Museumsbetrieb, der Kunstmarkt und zeitgenössische Kunsttheorien Gegenstand seiner künstlerischen Arbeit. Gleichzeitig hinterfragte er in Weiterentwicklung der Arbeit seines Landsmannes René Magritte die Widersprüche zwischen Wort und Bild, überschritt aber früh die Grenzen der Malerei, indem er Installationen, Skulpturen, Künstlerbücher, Fotografien und Filme schuf. In Ausarbeitung seiner Infragestellung der gesellschaftlichen Rolle des Museums gründete er 1968 in seiner Brüsseler Wohnung ein ?Museum für Moderne Kunst? und widmete diesem in Form verschiedener Museumssektionen eine Reihe großer Installationen. Derart schuf er vielfältige sowohl kritisch reflektierte als auch poetisch komplexe Werke. So findet zum Beispiel Magrittes berühmtes Bild ?Dies ist keine Pfeife? (?Ceci n?est pas une pipe?) eine institutionskritische Umkehrung in dem humorvollen Diktum ?Dies ist kein Kunstwerk? (1972), das in einer seiner Installationen jedes einzelne Objekt bezeichnet. Broodthaers? Werk gilt in vieler Hinsicht als wegweisend für die Entwicklung der Bildenden Kunst in den 1980er und 1990er Jahren. Er hat Maßstäbe gesetzt für eine Kunst, die ihre institutionellen und ökonomischen Bezüge reflektiert und den Anspruch souveräner Eigenständigkeit von Kunst hinterfragt und immer wieder neu definiert.
