Mai 2001. - Die politischen Strukturen der römischen Republik waren nicht dafür ausgelegt, den Aufstieg Roms zur Weltmacht zu bewältigen. Die alten Eliten erwiesen sich als unfähig, die mit diesem Prozeß einhergehenden strukturellen innen- und außenpolitischen Herausforderungen zu meistern. Außenpolitisch - und das hieß in der Regel militärisch - behalf man sich zunehmend mit Sonderkommanden, die einzelnen Heerführern eine noch nie dagewesene Machtfülle eintrugen und enge, letztlich staatsgefährdende persönliche Bindungen zwischen den Befehlshabern und ihren Truppen schufen. Innenpolitisch sperrte man sich gegen die Notwendigkeit, den herandrängenden Strom der Aufsteiger aus Ritterstand und Plebs zu kanalisieren und damit adäquat und geordnet in das System zu integrieren. Caesars Analyse der Probleme und der sich daraus ergebenden Aufgaben war realistischer als die seiner Standesgenossen. Er zeigte sich aber nicht nur in der Lage, die bestehenden Spielräume und Möglichkeiten zu erkennen, welche sich in der Krisensituation boten, sondern war angesichts des kollektiven Versagens auch skrupellos genug, wenigstens ihm persönlich vorteilhafte Handlungskonsequenzen zu ziehen. Er paktierte mit jedem, der ihm nützlich sein konnte, die Macht im Staate zu erlangen. Dies brachte ihn in einen unüberwindlichen Gegensatz zu seiner eigenen Schicht, der Senatsaristokratie. Der Kampf, der sich daraus entwickelte, wurde während langer Jahre an unterschiedlichsten Schauplätzen rund um das Mittelmeer ausgetragen und forderte einen furchtbaren Blutzoll. Caesar ging als militärischer Sieger hervor, doch es sollte sich zeigen, daß er nur über die Mittel verfügte, die Macht zu erringen, nicht aber, sie zu halten. Er endete unter den Dolchen der Verschwörer - manche von ihnen aus den Reihen seiner eigenen Gefolgsleute -, die zu der Auffassung gelangt waren, es wäre besser, Caesar wäre nie geboren worden. War doch unter seiner Herrschaft die politische Streitkultur in Rom erstarrt und lebte nur noch als tote Hülle fort. Weitere blutige Bürgerkriege folgten, und unter Octavian, dem Protégé des ermordeten Diktators, vollzog sich endgültig der Transformationsprozeß des römischen Staates von der Republik zur Monarchie. - Luciano Canfora, Jahrgang 1942, international renommierter Altertumswissenschaftler aus Italien, Professor für Klassische Philologie in Bari und unter anderem Autor einer Thukydides- und einer Lukrez-Biographie, bietet eine moderne und faszinierende Lebensbeschreibung Caesars - der wohl berühmtesten Gestalt der Antike. ‎br. Ruggero II è l'artefice di un cambiamento epocale. Senza la sua azione non soltanto la storia d'Italia ma quella dell'intera Europa sarebbe stata totalmente diversa. A lui si deve la creazione del nuovo Regno di Sicilia che durò circa un ventennio e fu tutt'altro che incontrastata e irresistibile, ma alla fine produsse una delle maraviglie della storia: un'entità che non cessa di incantare e stupire, intrisa, come le grandi opere d'arte, dei corredi della dignità regia; dell'imponente e moderno corpo di leggi sistematizzato nel XIII secolo; dei personaggi di diversa provenienza ed estrazione che sono stati le braccia e gli occhi del re ma anche il suo cervello, indirizzando spesso le sue decisioni. Ma chi era davvero Ruggero il Normanno? Guerriero, legislatore, statista, promotore delle arti. Il suo mito supera, come sempre avviene, la realtà storica, ben più complessa e significativa. Il fondatore del Regnum Sicialiae non ha scritto lettere e quanto ai pochi documenti che ha lasciato non si può essere certi che siano stati dettati da lui (anzi, c'è perfino chi sospetta non fosse alfabetizzato). Le testimonianze sono tutte esterne, sono cronache amiche e nemiche, documenti e lettere ora ostili, ora apologetiche, e passi delle storie generali scritte a partire dal secolo XIII nei Paesi islamici. Da queste basi l'autore ha tentato di ricostruire la traiettoria di Ruggero II anno per anno, nel tentativo di stabilire le circostanze, le progressioni e le intermittenze del suo operato. Che ha dato vita, pur con difficoltà e contraddizioni, all'entità statuale più longeva nella storia d'Italia dopo la fine dell'Impero di Roma.‎
