These is also some offsetting from the plates to the text in a few instances. Some pin holes through the later part of the text, and a few of the engravings. Thick 4to. 285 mm. All edges gilt. Original full morocco leather binding; tooled in blind and lettered in gilt. Front board detached. The biographical sketches include a few that are retrospective, but most deal with prominent Pennsylvanians (mainly Philadelphians) in the era before the Centennial. ‎London: Printed by J. Cundee 1803. From Astell and Joan of Arc to Shore and Wollstonecraft First edition of this popular study of nearly 100 women. Alongside classic inclusions such as Aphra Behn Cleopatra and Catharine de Medici Remarkable Female Characters details the lives and accomplishments of diverse individuals such as the androgynous soldier-spy Charlotte d'Éon. It is bound as the second volume in the set the first being a counterpart on noteworthy men. Collective biographies of noteworthy people often referred to as "eccentric biographies" were a popular genre in 19th-century Britain and America. The public had "a fascination with eccentric characters" as "was reflected in reports and discussion in newspapers in works of local history and in fiction" Gregory p. 343. The anonymous author is often nuanced when describing women who defied societal norms. They write admiringly of the Chevalière d'Éon 1728-1810 an author diplomat spy and soldier who lived openly as a man and a woman. D'Éon's entry is one of those accompanied by a portrait which faces page 118. The book is also sympathetic to the movement for women's rights commenting that Mary Astell "justly observed" the "want of knowledge in her sex" and complimenting her "uncommon assuidity" to her studies p. 9. Of Mary Wollstonecraft's struggles and unconventional lifestyle the author writes that "the history of this singular woman til towards the latter period of her life has been that of one continued struggle with adverse circumstances. with heroic fortitude" p. 141. The accompanying counterpart on noteworthy men features Caravaggio George Villiers and Mozart amongst others and is in the second edition. 2 works duodecimo 142 x 97 mm pp. v 5 349; 344 lacking pp. 339-344. Original coloured pictorial wrappers chipped with a little loss on spines some staining around staples good copies. A series of biographies of famous figures in world history aimed at a Japanese juvenile audience. These illustrated volumes are biographies of Demosthenes no 2 of the series Hannibal no. 5 Garibaldi no. 11 President Garfield no. 19 General Grant no. 29 and King Charles XII of Sweden no. 34. The books by Japanese authors give an interesting insight into the European and American figures who were regarded as historically significant and as moral exemplars in the Meiji Era. The series was published at a time when Japanese education was still strongly influenced by western models although a new wave of more nationalist education was just beginning to take hold. President James Garfield for example is rather surprisingly perhaps described as having been not merely a US President but also one of the great figures of modern times 'in terms of his opinions an ideal hero of civilization'. Reflecting the intended audience this and some other works in the series devote a lot of space to the childhood and early lives of their subjects emphasising their diligence hard work idealism and patriotism. .
