1920 ORIGINAL ROARING 20s MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY AN INTELLIGENT EDUCATED NURSE AND CHEMISTRY LOVER WHO SADLY ALL TOO EASILY EXHIBITS THE RACISM OF THE DAY
LOWELL MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1920. On offer is a very interesting original 1920 manuscript diary handwritten by "Maggie" who works as a nurse at a hospital in Lowell Massachusetts for a kindly "chief" who gives her salary raise to $125.00 per month visiting her family often in another city and shopping in Boston. Maggie is undoubtedly bright writes well but using a 5 year diary for the one year we note an entry all too typical of the times even for a nice girl and nurse: she writes how she went to work as usual: 'a succession of patients streamed into the emerg. Room 1 a girl with a huge cavity in tooth; 2 man with an elbow almost dislocated; 3 man with a finger 'sore likadahell'; 4 Dave with a headache. 5 Negro wanting foot dressed. Balked at the last one.' Her birthday is May 21st and in 1920 she is 26 years old and weighs 101 ½ lbs on May 8 1920. She read a lot and had diabetes. She may have been studying to be a chemist as she belongs to the Chem Society and reads on the subject also attends many socials goes to friends and family for dinners and sits by the fire with friends. She notes on January 28th 1920 "I tried to digest an article in the Jan. 3rd Scientific American on the Einstein Theory of Relativity." She is intelligent diligent happy spends a lot of time with family i.e. playing piano duets with her mother on March 8th 1920 is smitten by a "Robbie" fellow who is studying elsewhere but they talk on the telephone and write letters while apart. She notes a Valentines dinner party with flowery center-pieces and exchange presents on that day with family. ril. La vita controversa dell'imperatrice d'Austria è diventata il nucleo narrativo di una delle saghe cinematografiche più fortunate. Tutti sanno che questa donna affascinante quanto capricciosa, figlia del duca di Baviera, cresciuta all'insegna della più totale libertà espressiva e iniziata ad attività ritenute poco femminili come la caccia, l'equitazione e il nuoto, andò in sposa al giovane imperatore Francesco Giuseppe d'Asburgo-Lorena al posto della sorella maggiore Nenè, essendo riuscita a colpire il cuore dell'imperatore con la sua fresca leggiadria. L'amore fra Sissi e Francesco Giuseppe fu messo a dura prova dall'etichetta di corte e dalle convenzioni che imprigionavano il temperamento dell'imperatrice. Ma la leggenda cinematografica tace sugli aspetti più oscuri della biografia, quelli che accomunano la vicenda umana di Sissi a quella di altre notissime "principesse tristi", da Diana d'Inghilterra a Carolina di Monaco, fino a Masako, moglie dell'erede al trono del Giappone. Come tutte loro, Sissi fu una donna bellissima ma inquieta, tormentata da passioni che la sua posizione rendeva impossibile da appagare, malinconica tendente all'anoressia e all'autodistruzione.

Domenico Sciacca Della Scala (1844-1900)
br. Domenico Sciacca Presti della Scala nacque a Patti il 30 ottobre 1844. Studiò agronomia in Toscana e creò nei suoi possedimenti pattesi una fattoria modello. Laureato in legge a Pisa, si stabilì a Palermo, dove sposò, nel 1871, Marianna Merlo, dama d'onore della regina, e in seguito principessa di Patti e marchesa di S. Elisabetta. I coniugi, esponenti dell'alta società dell'epoca, ne vissero gli aspetti mondani. Nel 1880 il barone Domenico fu eletto nel centro-sinistra deputato al Parlamento nazionale e fece parte, fino al marzo 1896, del Gabinetto Crispi come Sottosegretario di Stato al Ministero dell'Agricoltura, Industria e Commercio. Ricoprì diversi incarichi parlamentari e svolse in aula una vasta azione, pronunciando molti discorsi su argomenti di varia natura, specialmente su temi agrari ed economici. Accanto all'attività parlamentare, il suo interesse per l'agricoltura è testimoniato da varie appassionate pubblicazioni. Ben inserito nell'attività politica della capitale, intrattenne rapporti con i principali protagonisti dell'epoca. Alla sua morte (Roma, 6 dicembre 1900), ebbe funerali di Stato e fu ricordato alla Camera con una commossa celebrazione funebre. Le spoglie furono tumulate nella cappella gentilizia Piccolo-Natoli del cimitero di Patti.
