The present copy is number 52 . It is bound in the original pictorial green cloth mimicking the parts covers of the novel. Also present is the original onion skin wrapper which has several tears but is complete and the original box. The box is quite worn and is lacking the side panels of the pull off cover albeit cover is intact and decorated with the same illustrations that adorns the cover of the book. Leather embossed covers are firmly attached with title in gilt on spine all present and still pretty bright along with several decorations. Hinges on both front and rear are starting more so the back hinge. Hand sewn signatures are firmly secure and all pages are present. All illustrations are present-with the exception of the one on page 469--only half of that page is present--it's a page of engravings Colonels in the regiment. All the illustrations have foxing of varying amounts. Most of the tissue guards are present some are not and that has created some foxing to the text before or behind the illustration but the foxing does not obsure any print. A few other pages have a small amount of foxing started by a fingerprint. I found 2 pages missing a corner- pages 33 through 36. My favorite thing in this book is on page 363: a heart felt account of the career and command of Lieutenant-Colonel Clay who was captured and died in Marietta Georgia after having his arm amputated. In the margin in very small letters someone wrote "I was with him--DJ" Overall an solid copy of this book not Ex-Library that should supply many happy reading hours with this 931 page tome. Davis Y2C U.S.S BEATTY" DD640 and at the bottom is has in print 50171 "Manufactured by U.S. Government Printing Office". The book starts out in October 16 1942 and ends Tuesday November 10 1942. This diary was written as if he was talking to his mom. His job was in the bridge of the Beatty. He tells of many other ships and what days they joined the convoy. He talks of the secrecy of their destination of which he didn't know. He talks about pay seas people's emotions what day the ships turned and what day the ships met the convoy. He tells which ships fired first and second all from the bridge of the U.S.S Beatty. The SECOND diary he did not write his name in. He started his writing at the top of the page as follows "The Second Beginning" June 6 1943. It contains 12 pages of writing. The last date of his writings is July 13. He talks of war plane crashes shortages of food and water women suspense dates times and movies. All written to his mom from the view of the bridge U.S.S.
