EDITH HARPOUR
1869 ORIGINAL CHARMING MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN IN THE STYLE OF A NOVEL BY THE CAPTAIN'S DAUGHTER
ASEA ABOARD THE YACHT ASTOR. Good. 1869. On offer is a simply charming 1869 manuscript relic of a young girl's nautical life being a unique 184 page journal handwritten by 16 year old Edith or Edeth Harpour daughter of Captain John Harpour and at the beginning of the work we find them aboard the yacht "Astor". Edith proves to be a singularly unique diarist creating her autobiography in the form of a novel. She begins: "These "just fruits" at a late day are affectionately dedicated to a good papa by his daughter May 1869." The index of chapter titles: The Trial Trip Chapter I; Home Sweet Home Chapter II; Sunsets and Philosophy Chapter III; Twilight and Educational Chapter IV; Miss Falkland Chapter V; Bittern Lodge Chapter VI; The Village Curator and "other lights" Chapter VII; Changes and Nationalism Chapter VIII; Letters from Home and Air Castles Chapter IX; Ralph Cotteran's Daughter Chapter X; Turning New Leaves Chapter XI; Improves Each Shinning Move Chapter XII; John Harpour "Again" Chapter XIII; For better and worse Chapter XVI. Historians and collectors of personal narratives on life aboard ships will be hard pressed to find a more charming well written work. Here are some snippets: "How is her head Captain On hearing a voice a broad shouldered fine looking white haired gentleman stopped in his short walk turned round and faced a young girl who not with an assumed air of gravity had asked the above question. The "Captain" advancing a step or two passed his hand quietly through the brown curls of his daughter and gazing into her dark eyes said "If I informed my Eddie that "her head" was N.W. by W. or N.E. by E. how much wiser would she be But papa dear how are we getting along I don't like this perfectly quiet gliding! I wish a friendly breeze would come and give us a tossing! Then she added I don't think mama would relish it so much as I think and almost know I should. The lady spoken of mama smiled faintly a glance would show that she was an invalid. She sat or rather reclined on a heap of downy pillows a rich woollen wrap careful "fixed" about her the colors of which contrasted vividly with the pure delicate face and thin white hands that lay listlessly on the coverlid. Before describing any more of my dramatic person I must inform my reader that all of the hero's and heroines in this opening scene were enjoying a sea voyage on the fact and world renowned yacht Astor commanded and owned by Captain Harpour. The captain had seen service and for many years was the commander of one of the finest ships in the merchant service. His dream from a boy had been to cruise in a yacht of his own and having been a steady youth determined to get one. He gradually raised himself from one step to another until he having reached the top most rung of his profession

EDITH HEATH
1916 ORIGINAL UPSTATE NEW YORK MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A LOCAL FARMER'S WIFE INTENT ON RECORDING ALL THE ACTIVITIES AND OBSERVATIONS OF LOCAL LIFE AND TIMES WITH THE AWFUL BACKDROP OF WWI EVER LOOMING
JEFFERSON NEW YORK. Good. 1916. On offer is an interesting original manuscript diary handwritten by a woman living in rural up-state New York during WWI. Measuring 5 inches by 3 inches the diary is in good condition. There are 365 pages and it is 100% complete. The handwriting is legible. Edith M. Heath lived in up-state New York on a farm with her husband Fred. She was born in 1863 and lived her life in Jefferson County New York. Casual research has not turned up any additional information. She passed away in 1940 at the age of 77. She was pre-deceased by her husband Fred who passed away in 1923 at the age of 61. She had no children. Her diary is filled with the day-to-day activities of running a farm. "Pleasant and very cold. We washed. Had a very large washing washed two big quilts and eight sheets and a lot of other things . " Feb 14 1916; "Pleasant and cold. Bradley went to Adams after lumber. Fred went down to Kelley's to fix telephone but it was too cold to work. Bradley and Dora were over here we sugared off" Mar 17 1916; "Cold and pleasant. Bradley rolled all day they turned the cows out in the afternoon for the first time Mrs. Kelley and Dora went fishing I canned 3 quarts of cow slips and finished cleaning the pantry" May 13 1916; "Rained hard all day. Fred sprouted potatoes. I baked. Fred went to the Centre in the morning and got a new lawn mower $3.50. I fell down stairs and hurt my foot. Bradley and Dora went to the party at the Center." June 3 1916. In February she records the death of her mother Sarah Fassett: ". Ma was very bad all day. She died five minutes to twelve. Had been here 12 weeks and 3 days" Feb 9 1916. Several months later on April 20th she records that Fred sold her mother's house for $800.00 Edith's diary is intensely local. Despite a world war raging there is no mention of it in her diary. Indeed although significant events are taking place in the United States she resolutely focuses on life in her immediate surroundings. In addition to her daily entries she keeps a record in the back of the diary of all of the births marriages and deaths in the area. These are in addition to the many many references to friends and neighbours throughout the diary. This diary is an excellent glimpse into the daily life of a small farming community in America a century ago. The wealth of detail makes it very easy to picture the rhythm of the days and the seasons. Through her entries it is easy to visualize life in that place at that time. A genealogist would prize the names and associated details of the many people she mentions in her diary.; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; UNITED STATES UP-STATE NEW YORK; 20TH CENTURY; 1910s; WW1; EDITH M. Edith Margaret Libby
1935 Original Handwritten Diary by a College Student Spending a Busy Summer Working and Socializing in and around New York City
On offer is a wonderful diary by Edith Margaret Libby a college student spending the summer at her home in New Jersey and visiting New York during the Great Depression. Libby was a student at Central College in Fayette Missouri at the time of writing this diary. An inscription notes a second address in New Jersey across the river from New York City which appears to be Libby's home. It is likely that she is home on a summer break from college and her entries describe places and events in New York City.

She opens her journal noting a trip to see Les Miserables. In view of what was going to happen in a few short years she makes an interesting observation: "I'm glad I went. Its a picture to make one think and to be thankful that he doesn't live in an age of galleys and revolution tho we seem to have uprisings pretty close to the latter" July 23.

An entry on July 24 suggests that Libby was studying education with a plan to teach secondary school. "This morning I went to Columbia and got a library school catalogue. Their school sounds very good but it costs too much I'm afraid. Went to a class in the teaching of music appreciation in high schools."

The author describes some of the places she visited such as the Cathedral of St. John the Divine and the Art Museum. She also notes many of the comings and goings of her fellow students: "We dined out tonight walking down Broadway to 102nd st. To Old Algiers a very nice restaurant . . . We really enjoyed our meal there. And the food is delicious too. Its fun to eat out once in a while like that. I wish I could afford to do it oftener" July 24.

Libby had a job for the summer working as a maid. An earlier entry describes a letter she received from her college saying that she must give up either her scholarship or her student job as she can't have both. The pages flow in a detailed description of her daily life the people she interacts with and the many places she visits. She describes in detail a visit with family and friends to Palisades Park: "We all had a very large evening and a swell time. The only trouble was that it was too short. I'm glad that Norm went because that made it more fun for me. That boy is certainly good company. Butch is a lot of fun too but he is a little young yet" August 9.

The diary is recorded in a lined undated coil-top notebook. Measuring 5 inches by 4 inches it contains 178 pages and is 100 percent complete. The notebook is in very good condition and the handwriting is quite legible. This book provides a well-written engaging commentary on the daily life of Edith Margaret Libby. Full of rich detail it offers a social historian an excellent window into life in one of America's largest metropolitan areas during the Depression. hardcover

EDITH SOUTHER TUFTS
1924-1928 Diary of the Edith Souther Tufts the New Hampshire-Born Female Professor and Long-Time Wellesley College Dean of Residence
Wellesley Massachusetts Mass MA. Fair with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer is the diary of a woman ahead of her time who spent her life in academia advocating for womens education through her roles as professor of Greek and later Dean of Residence at Wellesley College. Edith Souther Tufts 1862-1935 was born in Dover New Hampshire to Dr. Charles Augustus Tufts 1821-1899 and Anne Blanchard Souther 1827-1907. Dr. Tufts was well-known in Dover as a pharmacist physician councilman alderman town clerk associate judge and senator. He ran the family apothecary shop which had been opened by his father Asa Alfred Tufts in 1815 and was one of the oldest apothecary shops in the country. Edith completed a five-year B. A. In Music from Wellesley College in 1885 a M. A. From Yale in 1895 and was granted an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1927. She taught Greek at Wellesley College and then at the Norwich Free Academy. In 1902 she returned to Wellesley where she remained for the duration of her career. Tufts was named Dean of Residence at Wellesley in 1919 and held that position until her retirement in 1930. She was a trustee of the University of New Hampshire. She passed away suddenly while attending a Wellesley class of 1884 reunion. At the time of her death Tufts was staying at the Presidents House with her dear lifelong friend and Wellesley president Ellen Fitz Pendleton 1864-1936. Edith writes of Pendleton regularly referring to her mostly as E. F. P. in her diary. While Tufts was never married and had no children she clearly had extremely fulfilling and loving female friendships. Ediths diary is rich with details of her working life social life and summer travel and activities such as the trip to Europe in Summer 1924 which involved Pendleton. Though she is 62-years-old when she begins her diary Edith is an incredibly busy and sought-after academic balancing her work as professor and dean with her speaking engagements and event commitments. She also notes the goings-on of other faculty members and administrators. While Tufts is a successful and well-respected professional she remains humble. For example she was granted an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from University of New Hampshire on June 20 1927. Her diary entry for the day makes it seem like she simply took an unremarkable day trip back home: Drove by motor for Durham at 7am. Lake Minnie
to Dover and bring Sandy and Marion back. Meet J. A. T and G. Sawyer. Interesting exercise. Address by C. R. Browne Charles Reynolds Browne Dean of the Yale Divinity School. Lunch with J. A. T and E. C. S. Reach Wellesley in time for dinner June 20 1927. Ediths writing varies by day. Some days she writes detailed newsy entries some days she skips altogether and some days she makes cursory notes with only the highlights. Most days she is engaging in activities connected to Wellesleys academics recruitment or housing and building operations. Some excerpts give the flavour of her writing: .Take train to Leamington. The 1920s were a time of great change for American women. The decade opened with women winning the right to vote and womens voices were becoming stronger. More women began entering postsecondary institutions and finding their places in the workforce. Tufts and her Wellesley contemporaries were many steps ahead having held advanced degrees and leadership positions in higher education for years. Tufts diary is an exceptional document for those interested in the history of Wellesley College the role and experience of American women in the 1920s women in leadership roles and the leadership faculty and students of Wellesley College between 1924-1928. The diary measures 6.75x4 inches. It is a 5-year diary containing 365 pages plus memoranda. Edith has filled approximately 70% of the diary. While her periods of consistent writing and breaks are sporadic she seems to forget to write for most of December each year. The diary covers shows signs of age and are faded and chipping. The spine is in-tact but loose. All pages are present and attached. The writing is in pencil and is very legible though Tufts handwriting is sometimes rushed and challenging to interpret. Overall the diary is Fair to Good. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 365 pages . paperback

The Life And Letters of Raja Rammohun Roy
About The Book : Rammohun Roy was truly an epoch-making man. No epoch in the history of a nation can be more fittingly named after a man than modern India after Raja Rammohun Roy; and no man has adjuster right to be called the prophet of an era than the Raja of the present epoch in India. Rammohun Roy was born at a momentous juncture in the history of India and was, under the providence of God, destined to mould the national life in all its bearings, as few have done in the history of the race. The political, social and religious life of New India has been permanently stamped with the personality of Rammohun Roy and his name will remain indissolubly associated with the history of modern India. At the time of Rammohun Roy's birth a dense cloud of darkness was brooding over the country. About The Editors : Sophia Dobson Collet (1822–1894) was a 19th-century English feminist freethinker. She wrote under the pen name Panthea in George Holyoake's Reasoner, wrote for The Spectator and was a friend of the leading feminist Frances Power Cobbe. Sophia Dobson Collet was born Sophia Dobson in the parish of St. Pancras, London, the fifth of seven children of John Dobson (1778–1827), and his wife (and first cousin), Elizabeth Barker (1787–1875). She was described by Richard Garnett in the biography of William Johnson Fox as having attacks of a "disabling illness". Her elder brother was the Chartist radical Collet Dobson Collet (1812–1898).Another of her brothers was the engineer Edward Dobson (1816/17–1908). She was the aunt of social reformer Clara Collet (1860–1948), who worked with Charles Booth on his great investigative work Life and Labour of the People of London; and Sir Wilfred Collet, governor of British Honduras and British Guiana. Hem Chandra Sarkar (D-1932), Partner: Labanyaprabha Bose, Education: University of Calcutta, Harris Manchester College, Most widely held works by Hem Chandra Sarkar: The life and letters of Raja Rammohun Roy; A life of Ananda Mohan Bose; The religion of the Brahmo Samaj; Rammohun Roy, the father of modern India; Sivanath Sastri; Religious evolution in India.
