NAKAHASHI
1939 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT WORLD WAR II DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A LONELY INTROSPECTIVE PHILOSOPHICAL JAPANESE SOLDIER STRICKEN WITH MALARIA RECOVERING IN CHINA
NANKING SHANGHAI CHINA JAPAN. Good. 1939. On offer is a very unique original manuscript Japanese World War II diary handwritten by a hospitalized soldier perhaps even a doctor date March to September Showa 14 1939. Over 68 pages of entries we learn that Mr. Nakahashi contracted malaria in China and was sent to hospitals in Nanking and then Shanghai to recover. His ordeal with the illness with wartime China as the backdrop makes for a unique perspective of the start to the conflict. We also learn he is a soldier philosopher devoted husband and overall a wonderful diarist. Here are snippets: April 18 The life in hospital is boring as usual but it can't be helped. Mr. Tanimura brought some package from Mr. Hirata. I was glad so I sent a thank you letter. Yamanaka came to see me as usual. 19 I sent a card to my kid. ---day seems to get closer for him her. I wonder what's gonna happen. 21 The patients at army hospital are different from the hospital in Tanchi 26 This is a very beautiful morning. The view from this second floor is beautiful like a painting. I hear the mental patient from downstairs saying something loud. I feel sorry for him. Some young people came to see patients in women hospital. Life is a fate but we can make an effort as well. 27 I feel very sick probably because of medicines. Yamanaka went back to the army and we talked about our hometown everyday so I miss it very much. I wish I was well I can't believe I'm in the hospital; is God up there laughing at me or punishing me I feel lonely. I read -ko his wife's letter thoroughly today. 10 or more planes in the sky all day today. Here seems same as my hometown. I want to go home but feel like not going back. After dinner Mr. Nakano gave me the letter from-ko. Her letter is very considerate. I feel nothing but grateful to have her as my wife. I miss Yamanaka. Someone who has left is always missed and loved. 30 I had a hard time to sleep last night. I heard the scream of a mental patient and saw a beautiful moonlight from the window. I also had a strange and unpleasant dream; the woman I know died and the dream was so vivid. I still can recall the dream. I write this diary but it's meaningless because the life here never changes. No changes but today never comes back. May 2 Sad news ; Sasaki passed away. I was very surprised. I feel fragility of life. I can't believe my friend who was well and worked with me died. I feel sorry for his wife too. I heard she is having baby this month. 7 I was sent to Nankin by a hospital ship. The air seems different from the one 4 months ago. 14 I had an order to be sent to Shanghai today. This was pleasant hospital. July15 I'm getting sick of this hospital life in Shanghai hospital. Even if it's too boring I know I can deal with it when I want some hope and think about improvement in the future but I don't feel like it so I stop writing this diary for a while. August 26 The result of medical check said I'm recovered completely from my illness. I think about all I've done for it and I feel speechless. September 1 I've decided to write this diary from today once again. It might be useful in the future. It is a beautiful fall morning. I feel like studying. I guess my health is the most important thing.' The diary also includes some ephemera: "- I live with gratitude. People who appreciate everything from every single thing on earth don't have any complaint. Work for not yourself but society and others. - Live within income. If outcome gets more than income it's like you are putting things into a bottomless bag. Have a simple and appropriate life. - Try to get along with family. If you have money save the money. Don't gamble. Don't have a bad habit. - Don't pretend to be someone you are not. If you do you only suffer from things. - Don't have a debt. Saving is the stairs for success. Having debt is the stairs you are going down to the bottom. - Have a strong sense of independent and self respect. Don't have a dependent heart. - Don't be "a 3 days monk". We tend to quit something in 3 days. Be patient as "3 years even on a small rock". - Be calm when you are rushing. There is honor when you don't fight. - Don't regret the past don't worry the future. Do your best to do your present work. - Patience is base of

NANCY MASTON
1845 ORIGINAL PRE CIVIL WAR MANUSCRIPT DIARY HANDWRITTEN BY A MEDINA NEW YORK MATRIARCH FEATURING LOCAL HISTORY AND GENEALOGY
MEDINA NEW YORK WAYNE COUNTY. Fair. 1845. On offer is a fascinating pre Civil War 1845 with notes to 1869 manuscript diary handwritten by Nancy Maston who is a resident in or near Medina New York in Wayne County. She was born on September 20th 1796 thusly 48 years old at the outset of the diary. We note that Nancy when she turns 67 years old in 1863 that she considers herself "quite an old woman but somewhat smart yet." She has a son Henry and a husband Ephraim. Her mother is noted on Sept. 20 1862 to be remembered to have died some time before at 85 years of age and Nancy misses her very much. Nancy describes on December 25 1858 when the journal entries begin "Wilcox Mill burnt down in Medina - formerly the old tannery - lost everything no insurance has wife daughter and son." Ephraim and Henry were present at the scene. A Civil War Draft is mentioned on Feb. 24 1865 as "an exciting day - an awful war when will it come to an end" Also the death of a friend from an April 16 1869 entry where the "girls" and Henry have gone to attend the funeral of Isaac Heist - died of typhoid fever and congestion of the brain." Apart from the above entries life seems pretty good and even keeled: ordinary entries of visits with people back and forth i.e. R. Douglass 9/10 Sept 1847 13th Sept same year Littell and Aunt Lydia and 15th of that month with Dr. Hill - note here that her writing deteriorates for some reason in 1847. Visits with people also 1855 and 1853. Normal life comprises of men/family folk riding the sleigh for visits and "chop wood for stove". Nancy is also religious and "laments people have lost respect for the gospel" - also calling Sunday the Sabbath. She attended the funeral of a "coloured woman" at the Methodist Church. While she writes sporadically there are about 50 pages of entries and a number of ephemeral pieces tucked in including a World War I Registration Certificate dated Sep 12 1918 for Edgar Abraham Gould in Buffalo NY. The 4" x 6" is rather worn and there is some scattered internal foxing but overall Fair.; Manuscript; 32mo - over 4" - 5" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF NANCY MASTON MEDINA NEW YORK WAYNE COUNTY WILCOX MILL PRE CIVIL WAR ANTE BELLUM GENDER STUDIES WOMEN'S STUDIES AMERICANAHANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT AUTOGRAPHED AUTHORS MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY ARCHIVE DIARY DIARIES antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier Antike Brief Pergament Dokument Manuskript Papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito Papel . unknown

Nansen, Fridtjof.
FARTHEST NORTH. Being the Record of a Voyage of Exploration of the Ship "Fram" 1893-96 and of a Fifteen Months' Sleigh Journey by Dr. Nansen and Lieut. Johansen. With and an Appendix by Otto Sverdrup, Captain of the Fram. In Two Volumes.
Two Volumes + 120 Full-page and Numerous Text Illustrations; 16 Colored Plates from Dr. Nansen's Own Sketches; Etched Portrait; and Photogravures. Large 8vo. Original full dark blue cloth binding, spine gold lettered. Slight spotting to binding, but still a very nice set. In 1893, with a crew of 12 men and five years' supplies, Nansen left the shores of Norway and sailed through the Northeast Passage to the New Siberian Islands, where he allowed the Fram to become frozen into the ice. The ice floe drifted westward, carrying the ship with it, but it never came as close to the North Pole as Nansen had hoped. In March 1895 he therefore left the Fram together with Hjalmar Johansen and tried to reach the pole on skis. After many vicissitudes they arrived at 86o 14'N, further north than any explorer before them, but here they were forced to turn back. After a dramatic journey home again, they reached Norway on 13 August 1896, the same day that the ice loosened its grip on the Fram north of Svalbard. Thus Nansen was able to vindicate his theory of a westward current, and the success of the expedition made the names of Nansen and the ship Fram known throughout the world. **PRICE JUST REDUCED! Naomi Wonderlich
THE 1928 DIARY AND TRAVEL JOURNAL OF THE YOUNG TEENAGE GIRL NAOMI WONDERLICH OF RICHLAND IOWA
RICHLAND IOWA COLORADO SALT LAKE CITY UTAH. Good. 1928. On offer is a super piece of Americana being a handwrittenmanuscript diary that records the daily thoughts feelings and adventures of a teenaged girl who leaves Richland Iowa on June 26 1928 and spends the summer in Colorado with a visit to Salt Lake City Utah returning home on October 4. At first one thinks the author might have been pregnant as she made reference to her uncle bringing pickles to the Fourth of July picnic "to suit my taste" and another reference to a friend making the horrid mistake of asking about her stomach but such does not appear to be the case. The diary was written by Naomi Wonderlich whose uncle published the Richland Clarion newspaper in Richland Iowa and in addition to writing over a hundred pages about her trip Naomi submitted regular reports about her journey to the Clarion which were published under the title "My Trip to Colorado." It is clear that Naomi was a wonderful writer. Naomi averaged more than a page per day of closely written entries on 5 1/2 by 8 paper. She starts her journal commenting on the frustrations of watching a fellow traveller play with the windows on the train unable to decide whether she wanted them up or down and then moving from seat to seat. Her conclusion to her diary is perfect: "At last my train came. I tho't it never would get started. At last we reached Osky Oskaloosa and before I got off I saw the folks. We talked pretty hard and try as I would I didn't go to sleep any on the road home." In between she travels to Grand Junction Colorado goes to a lakeside cabin with her aunt and uncle travels around the area by car walking and horseback visiting neighbours and making many friends and then embarks on a side trip to Salt Lake City to visit the Mormon tabernacle and to hear the choir. Then she returns to Colorado takes a brief job as a nanny and housekeeper for a local family who needs help and then returns home. She receives letters from home at every stop along with copies of the Clarion which include her articles and has a wonderful experience. Some of the places she mentions include: Grand Junction Colorado Springs Douglas Pass Meeker Trappers Lake Fruita Loma the 101 Ranch Rifle many many more. Naomi recorded names of people she stayed with met at parties stopped to visit with on the road and talked to on the train. She was very interested in other people and this comes across in her writing. Here are some snippets: Terrible disturbance last night when some kind of an animal crawled across Alma's and my bed. I was so frightened I trembled. We called fro help but no one came. Finally our courage grew and grabbing the first blanket and giving it a shake I rushed outside with Alma following close with the next blanket. Couldn't find the matches so had to arrouse Aunt M. When we returned to the wigwam we could find no trace of anything. Poor frightened little chipmunk I'll bet and he was more afraid than us. Before that disturbance Alma made a sad mistake by asking me "is my stomach in" that's as far as she got for we giggled. She really meant to be kind and was only asking if her elbow was punching me in the stomach. Surely was funny when it happened. we therefore christened our wigwam Giggle-wam." "Rowed over close to the boys and they followed us. I actually wished one of them the luck of falling in the water for they were both standing up in the boat casting and of course acting everything but sensible. They kept tagging and all of a sudden one dark hair turned the most graceful flip-flop and landed in the water head first. He came up pretty quickly and had his head first that time too. The seat in the boat broke while he was standing on it and trying to push with an oar the boat off the shore or rocks we were a mighty tickled bunch. I was the only one lucky enough to see the whole performance." Got up at 7 and wrote some more. Had breakfast and then started out to see the sights about 9. Stopped and window shopped quite a while. Went on to Temple Square into the Information Hall and registered. Went then to the museum there. Saw lots of Indian mummies. Then got in a gruop being taken on a sight-seeing tour. Went into the Chapel then the tabernacle and were told about the Temple. It was then nearly time for the Concert so we began looking for Browns. Watched the doors quite a while then went in. I sighted Aunt Maude and Omar almost at once so we went over to them. After the recital of the music on the pipe organ we started the hunt for Uncle Ross. Finally found him. Omar's shoes hurt him so Uncle Ross tried to fix them then we went to the Cafeteria for dinner. Uncle Ross was determined to foot the bill. We had a very enjoyable meal. Naomi's diary includes her time as a nanny for Margaret Elaine McIntosh who was born on 17 Dec. 1925. She very much enjoyed her time in the McIntosh household particularly because of Margaret's grandmother Mrs. Adams. All of the pages are in perfect condition and are written on in pencil or ink majority are ink. The handwriting is very legible and at the back of the 120 pages there is a month by month accounting of all money spent from the time she left until the time she returned. She also made note of every expenditure down to ten cents for a pair of sodas being sold by boys at one of the train stations. This is truly a wonderful account of 1920's America.; Manuscript; 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF TRAVEL TRIP VACATION RICHLAND IOWA SALT LAKE CITY AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH DIARY JOURNAL LOG KEEPSAKE WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS DIARIES JOURNALS LOGS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL PERSONAL HISTORY AMERICANA . unknown
