‎[Blues Biography] Gray, Michael‎

‎Hand Me My Travelin' Shoes. In Search of Blind Willie McTell.‎

‎
Blues Biography Gray Michael. Hand Me My Travelin' Shoes. In Search of Blind Willie McTell. Chicago: Chicago Review Press 2009. First Printing of the First US Edition. A Fine tight copy in a Fine dust jacket. this odyssey to rural Georgia peels back the many layers of Blind Willie McTell's compelling occasionally shocking but ultimately uplifting story. Portraying him as one of the most gifted artists of his generation this account uncovers the secrets of McTell's ancestry the hardships he suffered—including being blind from birth—and the successes he enjoyed. Traveling throughout the South and beyond this personal and moving journey unearths a lost world of black music exploring why he drifted in and out of the public eye how he was "rediscovered" time and again through chance meetings and why until now so little has been written about the life of this extraordinary man. Part biography part travelogue part social history this atmospheric unforgettable tale connects the subject's life to the tumultuous sweep of history exploding every stereotype about blues musicians and revealing a vulnerable milieu of poverty and discrimination demonstrating that little may have changed in the Deep South even today.
Chicago Review Press, hardcover‎

Jack Yeats 1871-1957 stands as a giant figure in Irish twentieth-century art. An isolated artist throughout his life Yeats dominated solely through the talent magic and inventiveness of his painting. ‎1935 Original Handwritten Diary Following a Traveller's Transatlantic Journey from New York to France Aboard a Ship Crewed by Members of France's Front Populaire‎

‎On offer is a travel diary providing a brief description of a cruise from New York City to France just a few years before the outbreak of World War II. The author of this travel description is unknown but context suggests that she is a young woman. On July 3 1936 our author leaves on a cruise ship for France. Her writing suggests that she is part of a tour group: "We are beginning to become acquainted with the people on our tour and many are quite promising" July 3. Over the next few pages she describes their passage across the Atlantic Ocean commenting on the weather and other passengers: "Ruth's cake made the rounds of the bar amid hilarious singing and kazoo music. Had a spell of mal-de-mer" July 3. "Visited the whole ship. First class is very luxurious but tourist is more my speed. It mite almost have been worth the extra investment but this way its easier to become acquainted with our group" July 5. Of particular note is the author's discussion of politics aboard the cruise ship which is reflective of the discourse that was occurring generally in the United States and Europe at the time: "Spoke with some of the crew. It's thrilling when almost every answer to political partisanship is 'Je suis socialist or Communist.' 90% of the ship's crew are members of la front populaire. Our waiter however is one of four members of the Croix de Feu. He says his sister is a teacher and a Communist" July 5. The Front Populaire Popular Front in France was a coalition of left-wing movements during the interwar period united to combat the economic crisis of the Great Depression and rising fascism. The Popular Front won the May 1936 legislative elections but collapsed in mid 1937 amid general social unrest as Europe slid slowly but inexorably to war. The Croix de Feu was a right-wing political party and movement founded initially by World War I veterans. The journal's author arrives in Le Havre where she disembarks and boards a tour bus. From here she travels to several cities and communities in Normandy. She discusses her experiences saying "I'm getting awfully sick of French meals. Spoke French all thru dinner with our guide. It was swell practice. . We read every sign and act like hicks" undated. The diary ends at Avranches where the author had a magnificent view of Mont St. Michel in the distance. This book is a 5-year diary that has been used as a journal with no reference to the dated sections. It measures 4 inches by 5 inches and contains 365 pages. It is 3% complete. The covers are in good condition although a clasp to secure the diary is missing. The spine and binding are in good condition as well as are the pages. The handwriting is legible. For a social historian this small journal offers a glimpse into the world of the better-off in America during the Great Depression. It also hints at the tremendous social upheavals taking place in Europe which would lead to cataclysmic war. ‎Lester Stephens‎

‎1959 Original Handwritten Manuscript Diary by an Avid Rose Gardener in Post-War America‎

‎On offer is a 1959 diary by Lester J. Stephens which offers a fine description of the daily life of America's working class during the post-war boom years. Stephens was born in 1910 and lived his life in Gloucester County New Jersey. He was married but did not have children. He passed away in 1975.Stephens worked in a manufacturing business. There are few references to his work but on February 5 he notes this: "Was advised today the Automotive Dept was turned over to me." The primary focus of Stephens's diary is gardening and specifically his roses. Many entries recount purchases of materials for growing gardening shows and various types of roses. In many of his other day-to-day activities he is attuned to the world of flowers around him: "Olson Frank Gilbert & I to go to Engles to set up Garden display. Olson and Frank can't go. Taking up 20 2x4's 4 ft long also 2 corner posts Hallman had made" February 7. "Watered potted roses in garage expecting to plant before going on vacation to make sure dirt didn't fall off roots when pots are opened" March 16. "I brought home 4 potted bushes that had not developed roots. Perfecta White Swan Gold Coast Summertime. Took them from pots and soaked them in water. With RAPID-GRO. From Brown Frank got for me a Little Darlin @ $1.00 and a Crimson Glory at 75¢. Planted them and the 2 I got from the Flower Show -- Perfecta and Sterling Silver" April 4. "Sprayed 10 gallons of material -- used FERMATE 1st time DDT and RAPID GRO. All these blend good. However FERMATE leaves a black residue on everything. Ruins look of blooms" June 6. What stands out in this diary is the author's incredible focus on his roses. This is obviously where his interest and heart lies. This diary measures 5.5 inches by 8.0 inches and contains 365 pages. It is one hundred percent complete. The pebbled leatherette cover is in very good condition and the binding is intact. The pages are in good condition and the handwriting is legible. For someone who is passionate about gardening and roses in particular this is an excellent account of the efforts of an avid gardener. Whether it's the use of chemicals now banned or a never ending battle with insects this would be a very interesting comparison with gardening efforts today a half-century later. ‎Myra L Jordan‎

‎1929 Handwritten Diary of an Elderly Depression-Era Woman of Some Means Living in Poughkeepsie NY‎

‎Poughkeepsie New York Hudson River Valley: Poughkeepsie NY Luckey Platt & Co. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1929. Hardcover. On offer is a fine diary of a woman living in the Hudson River Valley during the Great Depression. The author of this diary is not explicitly stated. However there are a number of contextual clues that suggest the writer is Myra L Jordan. Jordan was born on Aug 22 1866. She was the second wife of William Burnap Jordan. They lived in Pine Plains NY located in the Hudson River valley south of Albany NY. She passed away in 1953 at the age of 87. She is 63 when she writes this diary. Her diary is very personal focused intensely on here immediate family and friends. She hardly ever comments on events outside of her direct experience and the wider effects of the Depression do not seem to have had an impact on her life. Some excerpts: "Men here to shingle east side. Reynolds to clean up garden. Ordered furnace coal. Wrote Mr. Tuttle who has had and op & is very ill. Jordan back for dinner. & Bill called. Paul for supper & cards." Mar 25; "Pulvers took me to Frank Chases's funeral - very large. Girl Scouts - 26 with Miss Grafe & Mrs. McGregor came on a hike & I told them stories of the old house. Iky had teo clinics in Clinton." June 11; "Dad better but in bed until aft. Vic's folks called in a. M. Jordan and Sisty down in the new car. Got ice cream for supper and staid for our evening illumination. Can't get over the wonder of electric lights." Sept 1; "Went with Jordan & Iky to Kips for 6: 30 dinner with Miss Carter & her friend & the Russian Symphony Choir concert at High School - was lovely ." Dec 3. It is interesting to note that the diary itself was published by Luckey Platt & Co a major retail store in Poughkeepsie NY. The store was a fixture in the region for over 130 years. The book itself carries a variety of articles and information pieces on topics such as dieting plating bridge vitamins etc. For a social historian especially one focused on life during the Depression this diary offers an interesting perspective. It certainly helps fill in some aspects of what life was like during this time of great upheaval in the United States. Measuring 5 inches by 7 inches this hard-cover diary contains 183 pages and is approximately 90% complete. The cover is in good condition as is the binding. The pages are also in good condition and the handwriting is legible. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 183 pages . Poughkeepsie, NY, Luckey Platt & Co hardcover‎

‎1958-59 Cold War-Era American Railroad Engineer Handwritten Diary Detailing Successful Post-War USA While Reflecting on Global Events like the Berlin Crisis‎

‎Augusta Georgia: Augusta Georgia CWC Railroad Engineer. Fair with no dust jacket. 1958-1959. First Edition. Hardcover. On offer is an interesting America diary dating from the dark days of the Cold War. The author of this 5-year diary is unknown. It was given to him in 1931 by a woman named Annie Lee - surname unknown. The interesting thing is that although it was given in 1931 it was not used until 1958 and 1959. By that time from context it is clear that 'Annie Lee' is now the author's wife. From context we can also determine that the is married man was living in Augusta Georgia with his family and worked for the CWC Railroad as a switch engineer. The diary gives a good look at the day-to-day life of a working man in the post-war southern United States. He and his family are doing well in the booming post-war economy of the United States. Some excerpts: "We went over to Edgefield SC looking and getting some prices on a station wagon. The Ford prices at Yonce Motor Co straight sale #2350 with trade in on the chev $1925 diff. Same day the chev co didn't give us a very good brake." Jan 12; "Sears Robuck & co open. There new store this morning at 8: 30 AM at Walton Way and 15 St with a bank. We visited the store had some crowds you could hardly move for the people." Feb 18. He is certainly aware of outside events taking place. In several places he notes the crisis brewing with the Soviet Union over the status of Berlin: "The war clouds are drifting low over Berlin Germany these days." Feb - Memo page: This refers to the Berlin Crisis. As living standards in communist-controlled East Germany plummeted refugees by the thousands poured into West Berlin and onward to West Germany Khrushchev demanded that the United States Britain and France withdraw from Berlin. The Crisis culminated in the construction of the Berlin Wall. Other notable local events were captured by the author: ". The golf masters had their parade on Broad Street" Mar 31; "Bought Ford car Sand Bar Ferry Bridge open for traffic for first time plowed out garden" Apr 29. For a social historian this diary in its simplicity paints a good picture of post-war life in the urban south through the eyes of a working man. This diary measures 4.0 inches by 5.5 inches and contains 365 pages. It is about 50% complete. The cover is a light brown pebbled leather that has sustained damage. The front cover has pulled loose from the spine. There was a closure strap and clasp but that is now missing. The spine has cracked. The pages are in fair condition showing some staining from use and wear. All are accounted for. The handwriting is legible. ; Manuscripts; 32mo 4" - 5" tall; 365 pages; Keywords: handwritten manuscript document letter autograph writer hand written documents signed letters manuscripts historical holograph writers autographs personal memoir memorial antiquité contrat vélin document manuscrit papier antike brief pergament dokument manuskript papier oggetto d'antiquariato atto velina documento manoscritto carta antigüedad hecho vitela documento manuscrito papel Americana Berlin Wall Master's Golf post-war World War Two Ford cars Berlin Crisis America and Germany CWC Railroad daily life family man married American Augusta Georgia USA .
