The Diary Of Petr Ginz
Pan Books UK 2007. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine. Hardcover. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Pan Books UK 2007. First Edition. CONDITION: The book itself is in near fine condition and comes in fine dust jacket. More specifically: Edges of boards have superficial wear. Dust jacket is in excellent condtion. . Dust jacket is protected in clear plastic sleeve. Pages are clean and unmarked and in excellent condition. This book is an unread copy. ABOUT THIS BOOK: Not since Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl has such an intimately candid deeply affecting account of a childhood compromised by Nazi tyranny come to light. In 1941 Petr Ginz was a young teenager living in Prague with his parents and sister. Adventurous artistic and optimistic he wrote poems and novels and edited a children's magazine inside the work camp at Theresienstadt. Originally written in his own special code-language Petr's diaries describe daily life for the Ginz family and document the introduction of anti-Jewish laws from a young adult's point of view pithy and unsentimental. The writing stopped when Petr was sent to Auschwitz in 1944 but his books survived in a Prague attic. They recently came to light in extraordinary circumstances and were published in the Czech republic in 2005 to a storm of publicity. Edited by his sister Chava and including background material and beautiful reproductions of Petr's artwork this book is a classic in the making. Quantity Available: 1. Schapelle & Bonella, Kathryn Corby
Schapelle Corby: My Story
Macmillan Australia 2006. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Good. Trade Paperback. 305 pages. PUBLISHING DETAILS: Macmillan Australia 2006. First Edition. CONDITION: This book is in good condition. More specifically: Covers have moderate creasing. Spine has minor lean and moderate reading creases. . Edges of pages are lightly browned. ABOUT THIS BOOK: It was meant to be a holiday. A fun-filled break to a tropical paradise to celebrate a sister's birthday. But for Schapelle Corby it ended up a waking nightmare. She was arrested at Denpasar airport after 4.2 kilograms of marijuana was found in her boogie-board bag. Schapelle had become the real-life victim of every traveller's darkest fear - drugs had been placed in her bag after she checked it in. Though completely innocent she was forced to face the consequences of someone else's crime in a country where the penalties for drug smuggling are among the harshest in the world. Her trial and conviction became one of the biggest stories of the decade in Australia and the entire nation watched in horror as she was sentenced to twenty years in jail. Yet despite the huge media coverage the one voice we never properly heard was Schapelle's herself. Now in this searing and utterly compelling book she tells her own story: of being wrenched from a carefree holiday into a stinking police cell of an alien legal system where her attempts to prove herself innocent were thwarted at every turn and of learning to survive - day by terrible day - in the squalor discomfort and violence of a third-world jail. Schapelle's story is an account like no other - of a young woman experiencing the unimaginable and enduring the unendurable with courage strength and humour. It is simply the most unforgettable book you'll ever read. Quantity Available: 1. Category: True Crime; Biography & Autobiography. ISBN: 1405037911. ISBN/EAN: 9781405037914. Want more/similar Max HASTINGS titles please search my SIGNED NAVAL/MILITARY and GENERAL catalogues. Max Hasting's account of his family's tumultuous twentieth-century experiences embraces the worlds of fashion and newspapers theatre and TV pioneering in Africa and even - his father's most exotic stunt - being cast away on a desert island in the Indian Ocean. The author is the son of broadcaster and adventurer Macdonald Hastings and journalist and garden writer Anne Scott-James.One of his grandfathers was a literary editor while the other wrote plays essays and an enchanting memoir of his own Victorian childhood. His great-uncle was an African hunter who wrote verse and became one of Max's heroes. Hastings tells a richly picaresque story featuring guest appearances by a host of celebrities from Thomas Hardy and Joseph Conrad to John Betjeman and Osbert Lancaster who became his mother's third husband. 'All families are dysfunctional' Anne asserted impenintently to Max but the Hastingses managed to be more dysfunctional than most. His father roamed the world for newspapers and as a presenter for BBC TV's legendary 'Tonight' ptogramme while his mother edited 'Harper's Bazaar' became a famous columnist and wrote best-selling gardening books. Hastings brings together this remarkable cast of forebears 'a tribe of eccentrics' as he himself characterises them.By turns moving dramatic and comic the book portrays his own childhood fraught with rows and explosions in which the sudden death of a television set was only one highlight. His story will make a lot of people laugh and perhaps a few cry.It helps to explain why Max Hastings whose family has produced more than eighty books over three generations felt bound to follow their path of high adventure and popular journalism. In 1974 the death of an old lady of 97 ended the direct line of a family that had been in continuous residence in the Wiltshire village of Bratton for more than 300 years.Much of the material on which this book is based - a wide variety of documents the family treasures and domestic bric-a-brac accumulated over the generations together with the records of a family business the iron Works - came into the possession of the author herself a native of Bratton. She has used it as the basis for a new approach to local history: the fascinating story of two village families seen through their artefacts as it were.As well as their interests in farming and later in rural industry the two families were much concerned with education and the improvement of village lifeand both played a pioneer and very active part in the Baptist movement in Wiltshire. Prosperous rigid in principle but liberal in their outlook they dominated village affairs for a considerable period and in re-constructing their lives in a detailed and sometimes moving way the author has drawn together the diverse threads of changing social attitudes within a stable society that make up the very fabric of rural life . . .
