‎Oswego New York USA. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1914. Original Wraps. This is the handwritten personal diary of a young girl named Jennie I. Lee who was most likely in her mid-teens when she wrote in 1912 and 1914. The diary was a Christmas present to her from Mary Gardner. Jennie lived in upstate New York near Oswego. Other towns mentioned in her diary are Belleville Sandy Creek Woodville Adams Old Forge and Watertown. She wrote pretty consistently in her diary from New Year's Day 1912 until early June of that year. She skipped 1913 and picked up again on January 1 1914 writing just about every day until January 27th when she ran out of pages. Jennie's diary is full of the daily comings and goings of her large family and various visitors neighbors friends horses dogs stage coaches sleigh rides History regents exams funerals play rehearsals annagrams socials delivering milk gardening etc. Her diary gives a wonderful view of a girl's life nearly 100 years ago in New York farm country. Some excerpts: "Mama fixed a waist for me didn't get it quite done." "Mason and I went to schoolhouse to a valentine party in evening 31 children there and six ladies.Mason got prize for drawing best heart with man's face in it-handsome valentine.""Had an offer made me today." "Young people gave their play tonight. Had a fairly good turn out for the kind of night. Rec'd about $14." The writing is clear and legible. On offer is an intriguing 1984 manuscript diary handwritten by a young man we estimate 15 or 16 as he is still in school and mentions studying the Civil War in History class who shares in his writings a long tale of desire for a girl named Sarah. The handmade diary 4 x 6 inches being a piece of leather wrapped around colored paper and held by a piece of binding cord like string is a gift from this girl. Purportedly found under a bridge the 92 pages of manuscript writing reveals Sarah's terrible family life and the boy's struggle through love to protect her and provide a better life. That said he lashes out at her when she fails to stay in contact or keeps him wondering if she is well and his life is peppered with other conquests as he laments his relationship with Sarah. He considers plans to take her away and escape the abuse but given the young man's age and still being in school there is really little he can do but the writing makes for a compelling portrait of the two. There are a number of illustrations that add to the charm of this romance of the 1980s. The town they are in is identified by the name 'Hope' and we believe from other clues that this is most probably Hope Michigan. ‎MEDICINE BOW NATIONAL FOREST WYOMING WY. Very Good. 1915. On offer is an interesting diary written in the early 20th century by William F. Will a young forest ranger working in the Medicine Bow National Forest of Wyoming. The diary kept a log of his daily activities from April 1 1915 to January 31 1916. There is an entry for every day during this time period. Will’s duties were many and varied and he often logged the hours spent on each task in the diary. The young ranger spent a good deal of time throughout the course of the year working on several maps showing boundaries domestic grazing allotments telephone lines several types of fire maps and others. “Finished drawing protractors on fire location map and wrote memo on some. Started to make a map showing location of stool-boxes and caches etc.” After reporting for duty on May 24 at Laramie a great deal of his time was spent in the repair and installation of telephone lines. Especially in the summer months Will often joined other Park Service employees to fight forest fires often for several days at a time. He also monitored campsites to make sure fire prevention techniques were being followed by the residents or campers. He was called upon to search for a missing woman and on one occasion he even searched for a lost horse. In the fall he helped build a bunk house at Brooklyn Lake and got ready for winter by moving the horses to a ranch and making mouse proof storerooms. The firefights make for very interesting reads. For example: “July 17 1915. Rode Woolfs range with him and Herder. Showed him the allotment lines and the closed area around Brooklyn Lake. Started out on telephone work but lookout man reported Turpin Lake Sawmill on fire at 1:30. Duther called up and said to wait until he talked over long distance. He called up and said to get Chase and go to the fire.arrived at fire at 6pm then rode to Turpin Saw mill found four of Bueoly’s men there. Men started to arrive at fire had 9 men on fire that night. Fire suppression - 11 Hrs. Munroe the camp watchman stated the fire started from the sawdust pile and he tried to stop it from burning the mill but found it impossible to check the timber fire.” The grazing of domestic livestock was permitted in the park in certain areas. This practice continues today and is still the subject of some controversy. It was one of the ranger's duties to make sure that the boundaries for grazing were adhered to. There were times when the local ranchers and the Park Service employees did not get along “August 18. Rode over to So ____ Fork hunted up the herder. I told him the sheep had been in my pasture and he had to keep them out. Then rode the range between Brooklyn Lake and Coney Ridge and found a little pocket that Woolf had just run through.Started to storm hail and ran so started back to Brooklyn Lake.”; “June 8. Repaired telephone line Rayfork to Ropers ranch got wire all spliced but not tied in called on Roper to see about moving telephone camp in there. He informed me that his place was closed to all Forest Service men and we could not stop there and he wanted all Forest Service equipment at his place including telephone taken from there.” Census records of 1910 show a William F Will living with his parents in Laramie WY. The Census shows his year of birth as 1897 making him 18 years old when he joined the Park Service. The diary measures about 3 1/2" x 6 1/2". It was issued by the US Department of Agriculture. The front page reads: “United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service. Notice. This book is Government property. The finder is requested to mail it to The Forester Washington D.C. or to deliver it to any officer of the Forest Service. There are over over 150 handwritten pages. The covers and spine are in good condition both aesthetically and structurally. The pages within are without any age-toning or significant rips or tears. The paper is a grid-lined yellow paper. The handwriting is easy to read and legible throughout in black ink and without significant fading or smudging. ‎GREAT BRITAIN. Very Good. 1815. On offer is simply superb manuscript of a Royal Navy officer's exploits in the age of "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World". From the Napoleonic Wars through the rest of the 19th century Britain ruled the world and her instrument was the Royal Navy. This outstanding manuscript details the service of one officer who sailed to 'the far side of the world' when the Royal Navy ruled the world's seas. The manuscript is 176 pages in length and is 100% complete. All pages are typed so legibility is total. Pages are 8 1/24 by 14 inches. The pages are in excellent condition. They are enclosed in a hard cardboard folder. There are several other papers with the manuscript including one of note that will be elaborated on below. John Fullerton joined the Royal Navy as a midshipman in May 1815 at 12 years of age. He began his service on HMS Larne a 20 gun corvette. Four days in he saw his first punishment: ". four dozen lashes the first punishment I had ever seen and I never yet met the person who could look upon the infliction without a shudder" p1. From that rather grim introduction he went on to serve in a series of HM ships and travelled the world. He describes his rite of passage when he first crossed the equator on Oct 11th 1819: ". All those who have not been across the Line now go below and the hatchways are guarded . and one at a time blindfolded brought up taken to the chair through a line of people who . "p. 6. He had plenty of adventures. Once after becoming acquainted with a woman in Rio de Janeiro he met a man as he left her home. After exchanging greetings: ". he politely put a knife into my left side and left it there. I gave him an equal portion of my sword and retreated to the ship hospital ." p11. With his friend Hack Hawthorn a Wild Middy p11 he often got into scrapes including one where he and some friends faced off with a Portuguese military street patrol: ". Our swords out and in less than three minutes had possion of their muskets and bayonets but obliged to decamp on board. . Jack generally got those who went on shore with him into similar scrapes." p.12. In 1821 he was commissioned a Lieutenant. His manuscript is rich in observations of places he travelled to and people he met. He mentions a collision with HMS Revolutionaire which was under command of the son of the great Royal Navy Captain Edward Pellew. p24 His descriptions are rich in detail: "I accompanied some Chilinoes to a fair in the country and races many tents with refreshments and dancing people from all parts of the country flocked and a very animated scene it was fair damsels under charge of their sweethearts or lovers and sprightly dame with her shadow not husband he playing the tender to some other man's wife" p77. He also keeps a constant mention of other ships they meet or travel with which provides a first-rate way of cross-referencing other ship's records. On Sept 9th 1827 Fullerton along with some other officers attended the theatre in Valparaiso Chile. He goes into a dispute with a Chilean sergeant which continued to escalate until he shot and killed the sergeant. After a bloody fight in the lounge area of the theatre he escaped wounded to his ship. In reprisal English officers ashore were rounded up and imprisoned. A week later he surrendered to authorities and a jailed until a Spanish court-martial could be convened. At length he was acquitted. What makes this account so historically interesting is that included with the manuscript is the typed statement of the British Consul John White who acted in his defense. The 13 page document is typed on 8 1/2 inch by 14 inch paper and is in excellent condition. It begins: "John White Esq Consul of His Britannic Majesty counsel for Lieutenant John Fullarton Royal Navy accused of having killed Sergeant Jose Maria Minos present the following to the court in justification of the act committed by the said officer ." p1. The defense makes for fascinating reading. It is accompanied by a 46 page packet containing 8 pages of handwritten notes which were part of the original draft. For a naval historian this is an outstanding description of service in the Royal Navy written by an officer with a keen eye for descriptive detail. Written at a time when the Royal Navy truly ruled the oceans of the world it is a treasure trove for information. Whether ship locations customs in foreign lands or life on board it is an outstanding primary source document. The court-martial defense is an excellent example of litigation argument in the early 19th century. It touches on key aspects of self-defense argument that forms the basis for the common law that governs millions of people today. On offer is the stunning original manuscript relic of Berlin's remaining months in Nazi hands the eventual conquest and the following months in the German capital from the rare perspective of a German policeman's wife. The woman Mrs. Otto Enke we believe wrote her intimate and private thoughts of the very last days of Hitler's Germany and the entire year of 1945 and into 1946. Stranded by her husband and son left alone under the nightly bombing raids of the last months of 1945 she details the horrors deprivations and oncoming onslaught of the Russian army whose path she is directly in front of. She writes of the rape of her neighbours by Russian soldiers; the death of her son on the eastern side of Berlin she writes on every page the true and horrific life she endures as the wife of a policeman in Berlin. Here are snippets: 13.2.1945 The day the fire-bombing of Dresden commenced Went to the publishing house to pick up my pay. Spoke with Tiburtgius sic Krocher Cashier and ladies. There are 18 dead and wounded there. Caskets were still being carried out. Went to the hairdresser in the afternoon. Gerhard and his girlfriend came and Gunter and Erika. 14. 2. Wednesday - Alarms the whole morning. Went with Mrs. Weber to the basement. Another attack in the evening now it's 11 pm and I'm going to sleep. As of today the Berlin Volkssturm troups are to return. The Battalion leader told me this personally. Mr. Hagemann got his return booked - he was just there. 15. 2. Thursday Went to the Market. The alarm sounded so I went into the air raid shelter with Mrs. Linke. In the evening I went to Weltersdorf. I initiated several conversations hoping to get news of Otto unfortunately nothing yet. Thursday - 8.3.45 Telephoned Miss Freitag sister of Sargent Gisiecke. In the morning I went to the market in the afternoon I went to the agency to look for information about Papa. The Hambuger also already returned on 3. Feb . 45. I am going again next week to speak with him personally. Miss Erika was here and this evening there was an alarm. Went to bed at 10. Friday 7.3.45 Went to the cinema with Gunter in the morning saw "Blue Fox". In the afternoon Mr. Kuhn repaired my In the evening there was an alarm It boomed quite impressively I was quite afraid. Will he come home again We Erika and I brought him to the Stezl train station. So now I am alone. I sit here in great danger the enemy is firing at Berlin the tears are rolling down my cheeks and there is an awful racket. Miss Erika came again in the evening and wanted to get me so I wouldn't be alone. She brought me coffee beans. Really kind. Until 8 pm I stayed in our apartment then I went to the Hagemann's. Mr Hagemann was afterall my Otto's Volkssturm comrade. I had intended to spend the night in our air raid shelter because Gunter had suggested it. The Hagemanns let me sleep in their apartment it was in any case the best I could do. Mrs. Hagemann even brought coffee for her daughter and for me to our bedside. I slept until about 8 but burdened with many things. What will the new day bring Monday 23. 4. I got up at 8 am. There was shooting the whole day. I tried to shop for some groceries but I wasn't successful. Everywhere there were long line-ups of people. most didn't get anything. I did get a package of cigarettes. Mr. Hagermann brought some good news: the Americans and English are to declare a cease-fire. Went to bed at midnight. Tuesday 24. 4. Slept again at Hagermanns until 8 am. Despite the unbelievable amount of shooting I did sleep. Today it's almost impossible to leave the house. Now and again I go to my apartment to get or do something. Around 5:30 pm there was an awful crash. Mrs. Hagermann and I were sitting doing some darning. Our building was hit. Everyone was shouting "fire" and I lost my nerves Many air raid shelter helpers came everything was checked out and it turns out that only the roof had been blown off. There ws lots of dirt shards and dust. Wednesday 25.4. In the morning I tried to shop for my groceries there were even free wares at the freight train station. But there were constantly lowflying bombers and there were many casualties and wounded. I was glad I hadn't gone. I went as far as city hall and on the way home I took shelter in several cellars. Bombs rained down every half hour. Across the way the house collapsed. So we spent the entire day in the cellar. In the evening there was more shooting. It was a terrible night. From 11:30 pm until 5 am we were in the cellar. Thursday 26.4. Now I am waking up. It's said that in the Bahnstrasse the apartments are being vacated evacuated. I've had enough. I got up immediately freshened up and went to Hagermann's where we had coffee. Another big attack. I fled to the air raid shelter…. I felt as if I was witnessing the end of the world. Mr. Koch and his daughter were wounded by shattered glass. We were first at the Hagemanns. In the Holscheimische Street the Liefke's apartment was hit by artillery fire. In general everything was being hit. My apartment is surely full of shattered glass. And everything is being demolished. Just now I swept up in the living room. I wanted to spend the night in the apartment but unfortunately the shooting was so heavy that I went over to my air raid shelter again. And that was another horrible night! Friday 27.4 And one is alive! The only thing: at 5:30 in the morning there was an indescribabledetonation. I wanted to go over to my apartment quickly to get myself some coffee. Mr. Beckmann thought that I shouldn't go up because was announced through a Volkssturm soldier that a firebombing was coming everyone should be in shelters. And so it began. One can't even grasp a clear thought. It continues on for several pages but the pencil is smudged and the writing is unclear likely due to stress… Monday 30.4. the day Hitler committed suicide. Drank coffee at the Hagemann's in the morning. Now it's starting again what should one do first Honeypots are ripped out of peoples hands. The people are beating each other up and I didn't get anything. Mrs. Kuhn gave me a glass full of I didn't even get bread because were standing there. I went to Scharzatt because I felt restless. Miss Erika stood there crying the day before yesterday she was raped by three Russians. Just now there was a terrible bombing - I had to take shelter. I slept at Hagemanns againg because there was artillery fire again.Tuesday 1.5. I got up at 8 am. Drank coffee. Stood on line to get bred until 4:30 - in the meantime had lunch. I got a voucher for bread for the day after tomorrow! In the line with Kuhn Hagemann Miss Kviea to the freight train station got potatoes. One can only wiggle one's ears shake one's head. The situation is indescribable. Wednesday 2.5. Stood on line 2 hours to get water in Pezau. Looked for Miss Erika brought her 1 bag potato flakes. Mr. Hagermann nailed all the windows. The whole morning and afternoon there were no shots! Could it be cease-fire There is a considerable amount of looting 3 patrols visited our house building up to the 1st North American 2nd Floor. Mrs. Beckmann spoke with them. Slept in the living room slept wonderfully until 8 am. At Durrbach two men got on Stood on the balcony at Stutzners until 10:15 pm. Thursday 3.5. ‎Milwaukee Wisconsin WI / Germany. Very Good. 1927. Full-Leather. This diary reveals the story of one young woman's trip to Germany in 1927. The diarist is Gretchen Ziegler from Milwaukee Wisconsin. Complete with what sounds like a ship board romance with the Captain of the S.S. Cleveland our young woman spends a good deal of time with him; not only on board but also after they dock. His name is Captain Stege and he even signs her diary in the front. She also has another man on board who is very interested in her and seems to be competing for her attention with the captain. Gretchen starts sailing on May 5th and her diary entries end on July 15th while still in Germany. The diary is fully written for 73 pages and then another 30 or so pages in the back where she has written addresses hotels stopped at cash accounts etc. Gretchen is visiting Germany because of her family heritage there. Research indicates she is related in some way to the Oetker family famous for baking powder. They are a very wealthy family and many of her entries have to do with staying on their estate. Among many there is a wonderful entry about her riding a train through Germany and the little girl on the train gives her a four leaf clover. Excerpts from a mere 16 days: "May 5th A.M. Shulled by the mobs. Shared stateroom with a Mrs. Traeger of St. Paul she was exceptionally nice. Table 21 second sitting. Companions Captain Stege formerly of Hamburg American line now living in New York. Mansolff who didn't seem to notice us at lunch but spoke during dinner. Also Mr. Westendarf of Coldwater Mich. who was crossing for the 31st time. Capt. S. gave me a glass of wine at dinner. Uneventful evening did not dance." "May 7th Became acquainted with more of the passengers. Moved my deck chair to the boat deck. Walked around all day. Had a cocktail with Captain S. before dinner. Mosel wine from Mr. M. at dinner both of whom took me to the dance where I had three more cocktails Manhattan. Purser wanted to meet me but did not go up on deck. We sat at the captains table for dinner and he is a charming man. Was down on the list as coming from Mexico. Weather ideal." "May 8th Played shuffleboard. Captain S. seemed both delighted and moved by the Buergemeister of Bergdorf's speech and the wire sent to the Hopag signed by six men each of a different country. Costume party in the evening but did not dress up." "May 17th Up at five sun shining everything immaculate. Captain S. came to the hotel with me there I had my first ½ l. beer……." "May 18th Met Captain Stege at one. Had lunch and rode around the city coffee at Alster Pavilion trip around the harbor passed the Cleveland. Back to hotel on combination elevated and subway. Dinner at a hotel then to Hausa Theater very superior vaudeville then to Kio high-class cabaret not home until two. Hamburg beautiful with many lovely canals from Alster. Weather cool but sunny. An interesting peek into the daily doings of a sailor whether at sea on trips traversing the world or in the plodding down times during a strike or between ships. This is the 1921 handwritten diary of William D. Goodsmith a merchant sailor home based in Chicago Illinois. William is an Engineer and/or Fireman on the ships he has duty. On his first berth it appears the Doctor and he are closest amongst the crew. Much time spent partying in the rooms when the ocean was quiet. Commencing in Vigo Spain January 1st this is completely full for everyday and it appears almost daily a notation of weather times of arrival and departure sometimes longitude and latitude etc. There is time at sea for the most part but he does spend time in New York between ship assignments. William notes his daily doings movies and even seeing Babe Ruth at The Polo Grounds some shows and other ball games are noted. The year starts in Spain onto Cuba and ends in Japan. Hawaii and Panama were also visited. He was relieved of duty and there are notes about a strike heading toward a cyclone seeing Naval exercises troop movements whale sightings and much much more. The print on this is very clear. Very legible. ‎1940s Royal Artillery British Major's Pocket Notebook Kept While Serving on the Allied Commission for Austria after the Fall of Hitler's Germany‎

‎Austria Germany: Royal Artillery Britain Austria. Very Good. N.D. Full-Leather. On offer is a very interesting pocket notebook carried by a British Army officer during WWII. The author of this notebook is Major H. A. Hansen. Hansen served in the Royal Artillery during WWII. Following the war Hansen was part of the British contingent serving on the Allied Commission for Austria which assumed control over Austria following the defeat of Germany in 1945. Specifically Hansen served in the Economic Division. Although our informal research has not been able to discover any additional biographical information there is an apparent home address from Liverpool UK. This is a fascinating notebook. It is his jottings of information that he felt was important to note as he carried out his duties in Austria after the fall of Hitler's Germany. One long section deals with an overview of the country itself and major economic sectors. For example: "Clothing : 1938 a self-supporting i. E. 'making up" industries especially in knit wear which was of high grade quality and there was quite considerable of this style of goods. Mostly restricted in Vienna to pre-1938 men under Jewish control. Latest evidence factories still in existence under Nazi control. Present products not known. Chemicals : … Chemical industry controlled almost exclusively by I. G. Farbenindustrial Development … an issue of great complexity. Pharmaceutical branch will be of great importance. Domestic supplies of will be inadequate. Majority of chemical works vicinity of Vienna Moosbierbaum in Oberdonau and in Steimach." Another section contains a list of fuels and natural resources available. He includes a list of German abbreviations their full meaning and a translation. He talks about the objectives of their mission: "Objectives : Basic objective to ensure controlled development of Austrian mineral resources. : a to the extent necessary to maintain an industrial activity at level approved by Allied High Command b to the further extent necessary to supply fuel and raw materials for essential Austrian needs and to the additional extent necessary to provide such supplies ass shall be approved for international transfer or international requisitions". For a historian of WWII and the immediate reconstruction period following the war this is an outstanding primary source document. It is one thing to read the dry reports and records of such administrations but it is another thing entirely to see the private notes of someone who was intimately involved. This notebook is a small ring binder measuring 6.25 inches by 4.0 inches. It contains 108 pages held by a 6-ring binder clip. The notebook is 75% complete. It is in very good condition. While the leather cover shows some signs of wear its in completely intact. ‎London England. Very Good. 1852. On offer is a prize 1852 diary and journal of George Beaufoy a prominent merchant in London England. This book which is in excellent condition is an outstanding description of his 2nd year running this already century-old family firm. The book is 10 in by 9 1/2 in. The paperboard cover and all pages are in excellent condition. There are 224 pages and the book is 100% complete. The handwriting is clearly written if somewhat difficult to read. George Beaufoy was born in 1796 and served in the Royal Navy from 1810 until 1851 retiring as a Lieutenant Commander. In 1852 he took over the family firm - Beaufoy Vinegar Factory. The firm was founded sometime before 1743 by his grandfather. George Beaufoy ran the firm from 1851 until his death in 1864. The firm which produced vinegar wine mineral water and cordials continued until 1932 when it merged with Sarson's Vinegars and several other firms to form British Vinegars Limited BVL. A number detail various social activities while others offer detailed information on business affairs & matters. "In afternoon went with Anne to the Zoological Gardens Regent Park and remained and hour & a half to hear the music. Jul11 1852 "Went to Sheepshead by Express. Walked on from Abington Arrived 12:40. "Wm Christmas and sic old and good customer came over and said he should continue his custom for he could not get a better article and I said he should write to Mr. Wakely if he could tell him where to buy a better article than Beaufoy and I thank him" Sept 8 1852. Records include purchases of various ingredients amounts paid to some staff monthly production runs of 'sweets' term used to describe wine and even Christmas presents. This diary presents an utterly fascinating detailed look at the daily life of a very successful businessman in mid-19th century London. ‎1966 - 1967 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DUTY JOURNAL AND PERSONAL DIARY OF A MUCH DECORATED SPECIAL FORCES CHAPLAIN SERVING IN VIETNAM‎

‎VIETNAM. Very Good. 1966. On offer is a very interesting original manuscript relic dated September 6 1966 through October 1 1967 of the Vietnam War and American involvement handwritten and typed by US Special Forces Chaplain David G. Boyce b.1928 - d. March 4th 2013. One part "Duty Log" and moreso a diary of all his movements and his personal thoughts regarding his service this is a very intimate personal history. There are even some movie plots he has imagined and poetry and songs - Boyce was quite a Renaissance man it appears! Using yellow legal pad paper originally handwritten the author changes over to a typed manuscript of 350 pages doing a superb job of recording names ranks operational duties and much much more. He does at times use blank spaces to be discreet and sometimes he admits he has forgotten the name. Here is a sample passage - spelling and typing mistakes intact: I remember the invitation of the Mike Force CO who is up here with a company guarding the camp while it is under construction. He and Sgt. Matthews the first sergeant had said to come on over and visit. I decided that if I dedn't get out that I would do just exactly that. I would go visit the Mike Force since I had now payed my visit to the Strike Force. I sat outside the team tent TOC for a while. Then I went inside and talked with Capt Horn CO. I told him my plan and gave him sixteen 16 of the Lubbock Texas "To a Soldier in Vietnam" letters- He said that he did not want to be abrupt but he had to leave for a meeting. We parted on this note. He went to his meeting and I went to gather my gear to go to Mike. Went outside and found that Sgt. Pederson was leaving. He said that he would give me a ride. He is E-7 acting team Sargeant. He took me down about 1700 to the Mike force location near the river- I dismounted and walked out into the woods. I saw the China Boy troops. They were obvisiuly Chineese. They kept pointing me farther back into the woods. Away from the road. Finally I came across two 2 Americans- It was Sgt. Leon and Sgt. Hoskins and Sgt. Leon came over and picked up my pack and took it for me over to the next object a half building 35 meters farther back. It looked like a half built house with posts and part of a back wall and about half of a grass roof with bamboo beams. This was the CP. Here I found the C.O. Capt. ----- Sgt. Matthews and Sgt. Lopey. I was given a very warm reception. It was the warmest that shave received since being in Vietnam. Even better than the one I received at Don Phuc mike force which was the best one that I had received up to that time. The warmth of their reception more than made up for the cold night that I was to spend there. I sat down and was introduced all around and told them that I remember Lopey from Bragg. He has a wife that is from Munich Germany and he now has orders to the 10th Group. Sgt. Leon is a dew and wanted to know why some of the ranking Chaplains are not ______. Sgt. Hoskins is called snake because he is very fearful of snakes. He is intrepid in battle is not afraid of death but he does not like snakes. The CO has orders to Fort Benning. He says that he is going "home". He knows Col. Stanly. He went through VW school with him and on one of their field problems he was point man one night and fell unto a 30 foot well. Sgt. Natthews is an old soldier with another couple to go which he will do in ROTC at _________ and hopes to continue there in ROTC after he retives. As a civilian the state pays half and federal pays half. Sgt. Hoskins has 23 years in Air _______ Since 1943. He was in the 519th Abn Bn that Gen. Yarbrough was in- Black Potch with the Red out line of a C-42 door and a resene parachute in the foor- He says that he will shortly retive and go to work in D.C. investigating welfare cases- His goal is to stamp out welfare- I sat down and they asked if I had eaten. I said no and told then that I wanted some of that pork and rice they had promised me. The served me with a big bowl of rice and pork with cooked cucumbers tasted like cooked turnips and a glass and a half of chocolate milk. It was a good meal because the fellowship was so good. I used several helpings of soy sauce to make it down and finished the entire bowl. Then we sat around batting the breeze which I usually don't enjoy but I did enjoy with them. Some one asked for the time and then some one said 1745. Shortly afterwards I need a watch to be more accurate there was a couple of explosions like a grenade heard off toward the river. Some one said that they are playing with grenades down there. Then there were more explosions and the sound an automatic weapon and some one called out four the Nungs Vee Cee! With that everyone started to scurry around. I was frightened so I took my cigar and put it is my mouth so that I would appear more calm than I was. I had a cigar because I had previously passed out cigars to Sgt. Matthews Sgt. Lopeg and Sgt. Leon- the CO and Sgt. Hoskins don't smoke- I put the cigar in my mouth and went over to my ruck sake and put on my tiger suit shirt I don't know whyand put on my webb gear. Next I dug out my 45 pistol and then had to hunt for the chips. I put a chip in but did not put a round in the chamber. Next I stood around trying to look calm with my cigar in my mouth. I went to the Nortor pit and watched then five the 60 MM nortors. They fived 5 had a misfire cleaved the barrel. I was very apprehensive as they cleaved the chamber and I tried to edge away without being too conspicuous. He finally cleaved it and began to fire some more. When he completed the fire mission the sound of firing died away and I thought that it was all over. I wandered back toward the CP trying to be as nonchalant as possible just as I reached the edge of the CP roof everything opened up all at once. I was frightened and the man standing next to me who was acting as my body guard told me to get in the hole that had been dug at the edge of the CP. I gladly got in. I thought that we were being over run because of the valume of fire power that was being put out. I pulled out my 45 and tryed to put a round in the chamber. It would not go. I pulled out the clip and all the bulled fell out. My Chineese body guard very calmly said "#10" and proceeded to take my clip and put the rounds in it while I helf his carbine. I than realized that I showed carry my carbine with me when I go out on field trips. It would be best to have a folding stock. He fixed the clip and I stock it in my weapon and put a round in the chamber and held the 45 on ready. I was expecting to see the VC any minute. My body guard then commented. "No VO". I couldn't see how this was possible but he said it several times with calmness and I began to be less frightened. I then got up out of my crotching position and sat on the edge of the foxhole. Again he saig "No V.C." and by now I began to believe him. With his words of assurane ringing in my lars I found the comrage to get up out of the fox hale and wander around. The firing was still going on but not with the first initial intersily. Behind the CP I found Sgt. Matthews firing the rocket launcher. He fired at least 4 or 5 rounds with the new self contained unit. The firing of the rocket launcher just about finished up the firing. A FAC came over. Sgt. Matthews wanted Francois to go down the road and locate China Boy 3 the CO & Sgt. Leon & Sgt. Hoskins & Sgt. Lepey. They would not come up on the radio. Francois did not seem inclined to go look. Soon they came in the CO and the ones who had gone out to investigate. The CO gave me a suvineer the tailfin off of a rifle grenade home made type that the local VC us. There had been 4 VC local type they had been firing at a jeep or trying to get in close enough to the New Camp for night _______ or trying for revenge on the Mike Force. As an informal critize it was pointed out that there were 4 VC. We did not get a one of them and in the process $5000.00 worth of ammo was expended. The heavy valume of fire at the end which had frightened me was the firing of their weapons out of frustration and out of just wanting to fire the weapons. Sgt. Matthews said that the time to be scarred is when you hear the "crack" of the bullets. Then you know that is incoming. Then is the time to be frightened- I realized that I had just about chewed the cigar into and also I realized that I was sweating out of fright. I threw away the cigar slobb and wiped my sweaty brow. Adding additional breadth to this personal account are more than a dozen photos many original of the writer who was the senior officer and the head of the Chaplain's Unit his colleagues and other Officers. Boyce we learn from a news clipping was a member of the Mecklenburg Presbytery Church of Charlotte North Carolina and distinguished as the first Presbyterian to be selected as a Special Forces Chaplain. He was also a jump master and fully qualified for the elite 3rd Special Forces Airborne Group. Further research regarding his military record list his military specialties which include an unusual and very intriguing record as Special Forces Officer Training Officer Chaplain and Parachutist. On offer is a very interesting post Civil War record of historical financial. commercial and governmental dealings being an original manuscript diary handwritten by an unidentified writer there are many many clues that should help pinning down the writer for a local historian or collector of the Amboy/Oneida area of New York who appears to be an important local given the large sums of monies he holds and collects regarding mortgages fees taxes postage etc. He is also the Supervisor postal we believe servicing the area as he mentions many local trips including: Williamstown Durhamville Hillsboro Constantia Utica Albany Rome hurt himself getting off cars in Rome Oswego and Camden. There are copious notes in this page-a-day book; recordings of monies in and out plus the author records progress on his military reports including the input of others under his authority. He also records the everyday and mundane things such as taking his horses to the farrier fixing the runner on his sleigh paying his personal workers for chores and repairs. Other notes include a mailed report for Post Master General his being sent to act as Surrogate for Deloss Banwell a "traveler stayed all night said he was poor paid nothing" mortgages loans appraisals delivering stamps dealing with road warrants estates and writing his supervisor's report . He is married and has 2 daughters. We believe both a daughter and his wife are named Ellen. ‎TENNESSEE NEW CALEDONIA GUADALCANAL SOUTH PACIFIC. Very Good. 1947. On offer is a sensational relic of World War II being a photographic diary with accompanying typescript journal commentary by an unidentified soldier from Tennessee. The Marine did a brilliant job putting together a handmade diary illustrated with two groups of photographs the kind you might have gotten in the PX during the War. Our sense is that the author has either returned to the area or hasn't yet left the arena of the War but soon after the War our author begins this charming retelling of experiences both good and terrible in the South Pacific. He uses twenty-five photographs and then details and stories relating to the people he was with or the scenes depicted in the photos. It is heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time. The soldier does not tell us his name but he makes references to being from Tennessee. He writes of taking a ship to New Caledonia and of people he worked with and situations he encountered. A great deal of his time was spent in Guadalcanal. In one moving passage he tells the story of his friend and mentor Howard H. Gabby Gould III; a soldier during World War I who reenlisted after Pearl Harbor. He became a drill sergeant and then made his way to New Caledonia. There he learned that he was considered unfit for overseas duty. Heartbreakingly Gabby dies of a broken heart 2 weeks after being shipped stateside. This is one of the most unique WWII relics we have come across. On offer is a super manuscript relic of Canada's Korean War participation being a handwritten day book diary pages of a soldier with the famed French Canadian regiment the 'Van Doos'. The 2-ring 6 x 4 inch pages record terse fact filled sometimes intimate personal notations of this soldier's duties and life in the Korean Theatre. Some pages are missing but from April 2nd 1952 through November 3rd 1952 he notes 216 days in Korea at this point this serviceman provides an intimate picture of a support soldier laying cables building rafts laying out minefields and many times under attack. June July August and September are the most filled months and in roughly 137 pages one reads the day to day mundane and of course the definitely not mundane entries - how he was driving a jeep with a Sergeant and a military officer and the jeep was under mortar fire and it rolled over down an embankment. Other entries include: May 17th 1952 29 years old; check Vandoos reg. 2000 mine A/P minefield. Got shelled in the valley. 18 - 75 mm came in on us in ½ hour. No casualties; received letters from patootie. Wrote letter to patootie; started booby trap MF mine field; Sgt. Jackson went to battle school in Japan; attended class…pontoon raft demonstration at Widgeon bridge; June 25th 7th Wedding Anniversary; mention of Operations Buster and Buckingham Noahs Ark; went over to Sgt's mess a HQ. Tied one on; constructed & operated close 50/60 raft all day; buffet lunch @ Vandoos HQs; took 5 L/Cpls up to Black Watch; almost got clobbered by a heavy mortar which landed 25' behind jeep and much more. One online source provides: BACKGROUND NOTES: The Royal 22e Régiment is an infantry regiment and the most famous francophone organization of the Canadian Forces. The regiment comprises three Regular Force battalions two Primary Reserve battalions and a band making it the largest regiment in the Canadian Army. The ceremonial home of the regiment is La Citadelle in Quebec City where the regimental museum is housed. The regiment is nicknamed the Van Doos an anglicized mispronunciation of vingt-deux "twenty-two" in French. The regiment's regimental headquarters is located in Quebec City with all three of its regular battalions stationed at various bases in the province of Quebec. The regiment serves as the "local" infantry regiment for Quebec. During the Korean War 1951-1953 the regiment expanded to three battalions each serving in turn as part of the Canadian brigade in the 1st Commonwealth Division.
