THE 1859 AND 1866 HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT STEAMSHIP TRAVEL DIARY OF JOHN TOVEY FROM ENGLAND TO SOUTH AFRICA AND BACK 7 YEARS LATER
Very Good. 1859. Hardcover. On offer is a fascinating handwritten diary kept by a Mr. John Tovey. The diary consists of actually two different voyages with the first trip having been written while on board the steamer the "Golden Fleece". The second recorded trip was while on board the screw steamship the "Hydaspes". It's not often you find diaries that have such detailed ship board entries as this one does. Mr. Tovey was a superb diarist. The first trip takes place in 1859 of which he and his wife Ellen leave for Algoa Bay in South Africa from their home in Gravesend England. There are 82 handwritten long pages about each specific trip. They leave Gravesend on January 31st 1859 and are on the sea for almost 3 months. The second trip 7 years later starts off on May 26 1866 and it's a two month voyage that our same man takes only this time with his young son. It seems to be the trip home from South Africa to England. It appears she has died because at one point he alludes to wanting to be with her in heaven. He does seem to be a bit depressed on the trip home. These particular entries go on for about 95 pages. The entries are not just one lined entries they are entire pages. Some of the pages are perhaps only ½ full but most of them are entire pages. He not only writes down his deep feelings but talks about the ship itself the food the other passengers the soldiers on board the whales sited the other ships sited the weather hurricanes his very sick wife deaths on board his "naughty" little boy his feelings of inadequacy because of his social status and so much more. Here are just a very few snippets; 1859 Voyage to South Africa "About 10 O'clock there was a sail in sight. As soon as we got near enough to her the Captain ordered our signal that is the British Flag. He soon discovered it and he run up his which was the Norwegian Flag. Our Captain asked him what his name was it was The Solade from Cardiff bound to Havana and had been out 11 days. He had not been able to see the sun so was anxious to know his position. It appears as if that is a common thing to state one another's position
.My wife has been very sick indeed. I wished some times it had been me instead of her. While dressing I heard a tremendous crash and opening the cabin door I beheld the saloon strode with the tea things or rather the fragments of them. They was carried away by the steward and some more brought out on the table
Having a steady breeze and all in good spirits because of the shift in the wind one of the passengers got out his gun and amused himself by shooting some of the sea gulls. In the afternoon we spoke with a requisition baroque. Some of the other passengers wished to have a shot at something so the Captain got a bottle and tied a piece of string to it and threw it over board so that it was a very good mark but none of us could hit it on account of it's drifting about. After that we saw a Portuguese Man of War or Naturalist. It was a beautiful creature to look at but not to handle. The Captain caught it but it stung him very bad indeed
.We went to the other end of the vessel to see the porpoise it being the first time that we had been that end of the vessel where the sailors sleep called the forecastle. One of the sailors came and chalked our shoes. At first we wondered what the meaning of it was and I was given to understand that we had been trespassing and must pay our farthing and those that would not had to be strapped down to the Bon Split until they did
.After tea we all went on deck to see the supposed Neptune. As we crossed the line that night he was to board us. When all at once a voice was heard to say "Sail Ahead". When then was a clamor about that the said Neptune was under our bows. Then there was a few more questions asked when he made his appearance in his costume dressed in sheep skin with a blue cap and a spear in his hand. The question was asked him what he wanted He said that he wanted to see the Captain for to see if he had any of his children on board and much more on that
.We had another sheep die thrown overboard. A very good bait for the sharks. One of the passengers was measuring the deck. I made enquire about what it was for and he informed me that he wished to know how many miles he walked during the day
.Today we saw some Cape hens and some birds called the Tropic birds. The sailors say that they are the souls of the drowned sailors. The superstitions still prevails in England this day
.Have not felt well for sometime no more has my wife. I do not like to see her so poorly for I think that it must be braking up her system and I fear if we do not get to our destination very soon I shall have her laid up all together if it was not for the sun she would look like a corpse
.This has been a very ruff night. Squally rain and blowing all the night which caused us to roll about most dreadfully enough to roll us out of bed if we did not hold tight. Quite a hurricane it appeared to travel in puffs in a circular fashion like a whirl wind

Having on board 350 souls and about 2600 tons cargo most valuable goods from India silks indigo sugar and other produce. Both from India and the Cape. On this same page he lists some of the passenger's names
.I dress my little boy to be ready when the breakfast bell rang. There being so many children on board they go to breakfast at eight and the adults at nine. Soon Sunday Service was announced to commence the troops have mustered on deck with the passengers
.I proceed to dress my son taking caution to clean him thoroughly as a few remarks I heard which greatly annoyed me for he was as clean as any on board but his clothes being not of the very best articles as the others he was I thought slighted
Towards night a wealth of melancholiness set over me that I was so low in spirits that the flood gates of my heart gave way for really I do feel so lost on board this ship all being above my rank in life and I being so low spirited that life and energy seem to be entirely gone. That really the wicked thoughts comes over me that I wish that the Lord would have memory upon my soul and take me to join Her that has gone before me
.All at once I heard a person call to Jonny to get down and looking see he was leaning over the rail. I am sorry he is such as naughty boy. I am surprised to see some of the married women with children frolicking about with the officers after dinner
.We have an old gentleman on board lying dangerously ill a Mr. Auckland Esq. returning to England to spend the remainder of his days but I fear according to accounts that his constitution is broke up and he's fast leaving this world
.After dressing Jonny and cautioning him not to go and play with the water I let him go. Had not been long on deck when he was like a drowned rat and I was obliged to bring him down and then I tied his hands and took him in the cabin and made him stop. He made me so cross. After dinner I went up on deck and was informed that one of the passengers was dead. So many souls being on board the Doctor ordered the body to be ready and by half past nine it was committed to the deep. Thus was the end of that poor man he sunk down
.We are making our way down to the Western Isles as the Captain intends sending a boat off to see if he can get any provisions for the troops as the meat is nearly all bad. The Islands are said to contain thirty thousand inhabitants. Portuguese settlements

DIJON FRANCE FR. Very Good. 1945. On offer is the 1945 Come-Back Diary of the 602 Anti-Aircraft Artillery Gun Battalion detailing the few months of the battalions involvement in World War II. The document is an incredibly unique and interesting piece of World War II memorabilia. As well each and every newsletter in the collection was written or compiled by Sidney Bernstein one of the most famous music promoters of the 1960s and the man who booked the Beatles among many other in their first tour of America and helped jump start the British Invasion in the mid-1960s. The Come-Back Diary contains within it all the volumes of the 602nd AAA Gun Battalion daily newsletter published between April 1945 and October 1945. Bernstein and the 602 AAA Gun Battalion are stationed in Dijon France for the entirety of the newsletters production The first issue of the first volume April 11 1945 has the headline Your 3 Minutes Gazette Goes To Press!! and feature short paragraphs under the titles Feature Story Music Dept. Your Daily Comic Strip Gossip Column Editorial War News and Tonites Movie. Other sections featured throughout the seven month run include Afterthoughts Religious Services Notes from a G.I.s notebook Letter of the Day Sports Personalities Predictions Sinatra what is the strange phenomena called Frank Sinatra and many many more. As the issues progress the newsletter takes on a more conversational tone dealing less with the events coming up than with the general feelings and daily life in Dijon in the waning months of the War as well as including more personal thoughts from Bernstein himself. For example: Vol. 2 No. 13 June 26 1945. Brother is hot.He cusses and cusses and cusses - The Sun-baked tents - the dirty sons of the Rising Sun - the Sun itself.but then he remembers - an intensely cold winter night on guard in Germany - reports on the hot loop Nazi paratroopers dropping all around - his fingers almost froze to his M1 that long long night and how he prayed that hed see the sun once more.The guys stops cursing.peels off his OD shirt and strips to the waist leaves his tent for a slug of water.smiles at the sun.and goes to work on the Tuesday edition. In total the newspaper is filled with items and tidbits from back home in the U.S. entertainment and lifestyle information for the serviceman of the Six-Oh-Second. Bernstein is a very competent and very enjoyable writer throughout and does an exceptional job of conveying emotion wit and the experience of daily life as a soldier in the Dijon. Days of heightened emotion such as FDRs death Hitlers death VE day VJ day the opening of Bernsteins GI Nite Club and many others in the last year of the war are especially interesting. Bernstein is an incredibly adept and interesting writer and these days show off his talent especially well. The newsletters continue until September 24 1945. There is one later newsletter included in the collection from October 13th. This is on the first page of the compilation and does an excellent job of setting the scene of the post WW2 landscape as well as Bernsteins feelings of writing the newsletter during the war. It is one of the most interesting newsletters in the collection account for roughly 85 pages. Each page seemed to be set and printed by Sidney Bernstein himself. The pages are in good shape showing occasional rips and tears but very little other than that. Some pages have smudging of the ink but nothing to affect the legibility of the content. The cover is a simple brown paper. It seems the front cover used to say 602 AAA COMEBACK DIARY with a drawing of what looks to be the Statue of Liberty however the drawing and letters have faded almost completely and are very difficult to make out. There is no spine and the book is bound by thread. This would make an absolutely amazing document of World War II history as it presents a nuanced and comprehensive picture of the life of servicemen in Dijon as the War came to end. As well this would be great for anyone interested in the incredible life of Sid Bernstein before he helped change the world of music forever. He studied journalism at Columbia University before working in a ballroom and joining the US Army in 1943. 1923 1924 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT JOURNAL DETAILING THE FASCINATING AFRICAN TRAVELS OF A BRITISH WOMAN AND HER HUSBAND WHO WINTER IN NIGERIA AND TRAVEL IN THE HIGHEST OF SOCIAL POLITICAL AND MILITARY CIRCLES
NIGERIA WESTERN AFRICA. Very Good. 1923. On offer is a fascinating original historic 1920s African travel diary handwritten by a British woman we can only identify as the wife of Carl who took two 2 trips to Nigeria that make significant manuscript histories of the voyages and their extended three month visits to the country living touring and socializing with many of the country's most notable citizens and other British ex-pats. The first trip was between 14th Nov 1923 and March 1st 1924 sailing on the T.M.S. ABA and then again between 12th Nov 1924 and 8th March 1925 on the SS Appam. The largish 8 x 6.5 inch lined journal with 175 or so pages of cursive writings by a keenly observant very intelligent woman who is clearly educated and traveling in significant social circles. We know they lived in Priory Road Bristol her husband's name was Carl and there is a strong military connection with references to Captain Lace Captain Harrison and Captain Mac. She and others had dinner with Sir Hugh Clifford at Government House Nigeria she met The Emir of Katsina and on board the ship who during her first trip was given the gift of a horse for him. During the second trip the Emir came to their place of residence and his horse dropped dead whilst he was inside! There are many references to passengers and life on the ships including The Plague in Sierra Leone a group of ladies she referred to as Grass Widows evenings singing and playing the piano. The second trip is significant for the fact that there were many soldiers on the boat and historians and researchers of the time and the place will understand this is all the while with the backdrop of Nigeria's most recent political upheaval. Whilst in Nigeria lots of text about setting up the house they lived in descriptions of the servants references to natives with bows and arrows bush fires lots of bridge parties. Overall VG. HISTORICAL NOTES: Wiki: The Nigerian National Democratic Party NNDP was Nigeria's first political party. Formed in 1923 by Herbert Macaulay to take advantage of the new Clifford Constitution the NNDP successfully organized various Lagos interest groups into a single group that was able to compete politically. The NNDP ran many candidates for seats in the 1922 elections for the Lagos Legislative Council winning three seats. BISHOPSTON GOWER PENINSULA THE MUMBLES WALES UK. Very Good. 1870. On offer is a superb original 1870 Victorian Era manuscript 100 page diary and some copied popular verse 50pages handwritten by Julia M. D. Mayberg as identified by the ownership inscription on the front endpaper: "Julia M. D. Mayberg July 27th 1870" an upper middle class Gower Peninsula Welsh teenage girl who details a life of some privilege living on the Peninsula The Mumbles in Wales between 20 June 1870 - 15 May 1871 travelling frequently with her widowed mother. We believe her home base was in or near Bishopston and family is noted in Dublin and throughout England journeying there with her mother sometimes with their servant Annie. A life of indulgence is described: daily afternoon teas collecting crests walking the seashore shopping in England jewellery and non essentials. Devoutly Christian her uncle William is a reverend and she attends church services very regularly with a sincere interest in the sermons. Well read well educated the author enjoys good conversation and even the French card game Bezique! The young girl's life plays out with the sensational backdrop of the renowned Gower Peninsula in South Wales making for an utterly unique personal account of life there for this young lady. Local travel included Swansea and all over the Gower Peninsula often via the family pony carriage and just on foot. Cheriton Llanmadoc Hill and Llanddewi-Brefi the ancient Llanmadoc Church recently restored and home pulpit of Reverend and author J. D. Davies. She also mentions several Welsh personalities: Thomas Bullin of Swansea an associate of the Whitland Turnpike Trust iron and steel manufacturer Mr. Beynon the famed Reverend Davies of Llanmadoc Church and Katie Acheson likely the Lady Katharine Acheson - daughter of Sir Archibald Acheson 3rd Earl of Gosford. Trips to England for a wedding in Bath family near Stroud a jaunt to Chippenham and occasionally to Brighton once for a spectacular Christmas shopping trip where she and her mother purchased a "real" ermine fur muff writing paper specialty foods and seasonal treats a crystal decanter dolls and a doll's wash stand and basin numerous gifts. She makes frequent mention of sermons preached by Octavius Winslow in Brighton. Relative to the period she often notices "servants" travelling with "masters". A journey is also made to Southampton to see off her Uncle Arthur and Aunt Agnes who were sailing to India on 6 January 1871 onboard the steamer "Ceylon." Here are some snippets: 21 June 1870. "We went to Bath and Aunt Annie went with us." "I bought my parting present for Millicent which was a crimson marker with two anchors meaning hope and two hearts meaning charity dropping from it made of gilt. I bought a blue necklace for myself one I had always wished for and went down to Millicent and showed her my gold chain and locket and gave her the marker which she was very pleased with. The book was owned by Hilliard Leslie of Bromhead Saskatchewan who filled the 60 or so pages with perhaps a quarter of the pages on both sides with friends comments poems and best wishes from as far away as Toronto Winnipeg Minnesota but is mostly Bromhead and another 4 or 5 other towns in Saskatchewan. All English language save for the very first entry of a Walter Block in what appears to be a Slavic language. The binding is almost detached and the text block is loss but still bound and not without charm. Sharp identified with owner's blind embossed seal "Clinton Bowen Bookseller & Stationer Salem N.J." Bound in leather 4" x 6" the diary is almost filled between January through March with legible ink entries then sporadic with some months mostly blank and a few pages of accounting in the back. He writes of marriages deaths church matters business weather local news hearing Frederick Douglass lecture arson fire making for an interesting time capsule of post Civil War New Jersey. Here are some snippets: Jan. 12 - "Went to Love feast in South St. Church. Then heard Mr. Coleman preach.Took Supper with Bro. Thomas.had Speaking by the members in Audience room first time." Feb. 11 - "Valentines going quite briskly. Presbyterians wound up their Fair & Festival this evening with a Loggerhead Supper." March 10 - "City Elections; I attended as Clerk - Polls open at 7 O clock closed at Sunset.Very close vote in Middle Ward. Republicans a little ahead but Democrats carried the City." March 12 - "I visited Samuel Williams this morning found him on his bed with a very bad cough but having been brought back to Religion of Christ was quite happy." 1923 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY OF A HARDWORKING UPSTATE NEW YORK FARMER WHO DETAILS THE POST WORLD WAR I RURAL LIFE OF A DAIRYMAN
HALIESBORO GOUVERNEUR ST LAWRENCE COUNTY NY. Very Good. 1923. Hardcover. On offer is an interesting post World War I 1923 manuscript relic of rural living and commerce in upstate New York being the handwritten diary of farmer Floyd F. Bigarel of Gouverneur New York St. Lawrence County. Floyd does not identify himself in the book but ephemera contained all bear his name and he celebrates his birth as census records find that he was born March 20th 1890 d. November 1971 thusly 33 years old at the writing and confirming ownership. Floyd does a good job detailing his life: he never fails to note the weather conditions his jobs for the day his personal entertainments visits personal appointments to Church or to the Hailesboro Democrat League meetings etc. etc. Sometimes however he leaves a very enigmatic note: "Stayed home today for a wonder." Researchers and historians will be happy with the details of his economy and commerce as he specifies the price of daily purchases whether expenses to the farm or a 10 cent loaf of bread for himself. He also fully names his contacts and friends and notes passings and news: "Viola Hall Farmer died today of Tuberculosis aged 37". It appears to be a busy dairy farm but of course he does much more; harvesting ice sells drinking water from well washing heffers cutting and hauling lumber having a wolf tooth removed from two horses using a milking machine for the first time and much much more. ELMIRA NEW YORK WILLIAMSPORT PENNSYLVANIA. Very Good. 1908. On offer is a remarkable archive of thirteen 13 manuscript diaries handwritten by railroad executive George B. Ahn of Elmira New York and later Williamsport Pennsylvania. Collectors and historians of Pennsylvania and New York State railroad Americana will find a treasure trove of details in these diaries spanning forty-one years between 1908 - 1949 1908 1909 1910 1911 1912 1913 1914 1918 1920 1924 1925 1926 and 1949. The reader will see a man and his family mature before one's eyes. Most of the diaries are 80-90% full with about 4 years half full but overall George does a fantastic job relating the events of his life in specific detail except for his own age! We know from the first diary in 1908 his wife is 30 years old and then we learn they were married in 1902. It would appear since there is one child born well prior to the wedding Helen could be his second wife the first having died or been a divorce within the last ten months. Local historians and researchers will undoubtedly discover the prior events with some small effort. The books are small format diaries but George writes in tiny perfectly legible script typical of an engineer. His life breaks down into four areas: family Church politics and the Railroad. We believe P. and E. Railroad is his specific employer but he travels so many numbered trains and lines on a daily basis it is hard to be certain. Living in Elmira he often takes daily trips to Baltimore Buffalo Harrisburg Williamsport and as in the case of emergencies he would go to the far reaches of Pennsylvania as he did when the Austin Dam burst. The family is large and growing: wife Helen nee McClosky b. Jan.28.1878 married in Dec. 27th 1902 her sick mother their five kids Harold Daniel b. Feb. 3rd 1902 Georgie Bertha b. Oct. 25 1897 and baby Helen Elizabeth b. Nov.22 1907 Eloise b. Jan. 30 1913. Executive level meetings the Austin Dam disaster clean up Charlie Snyder crushed under train wheels passenger train inspections heads investigations into loss and damage claims worked on instructions for New Car Distribution Blanks and revised Loading Instructions other investigations and committees are all matters for George's attention. Then there is the Church. If George is not working or dealing with family matters he is attending Church Revival Services going to meetings for different missions appealing to 'seekers' going to lectures etc. In the 1949 diary we learn that George preaches almost exclusively most certainly long retired as he must be in his seventies by then. Lastly there is politics which George has a keen interest: he notes on a mayoralty race: "Wolfe being elected by landslide of Republican votes. Unfortunately he was backed by the base element
Wolfe is a stock broker - gambler." George also gives a tremendous amount of family and area history and genealogical information noting births deaths and other local events. Online research provided this following interesting note that validates the claim further research is required to flesh out the missing years of this interesting gentleman and his family. A president of Harvard chaplain of Congress and author of numerous historical works on the American Revolution and early American leaders including Benjamin Franklin Gouverneur Morris Gen. Anthony Wayne and Ethan Allen. This copy of Washington's "Life' is from the 1857 printing. The book was originally published in 1839. About 6 x 9 3/4 inches 562 pages including frontispiece and a print of Martha Washington as well as 9 appendices. Bound in brown cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. Boards are moderately worn with lightly bumped corners and some minor spotting and staining. The spine has faded though lettering remains visible. Spine ends are worn away though underlying binding is intact and firm. Hinges are cracked but binding is tight. Text shows light age-tanning and some sparse spotting and staining. Tissue paper protecting portraits of Washington and his wife are intact. Text appears complete clean and easily readable. There is a fading previous owner's signature and 19th century date on fep o/w no marginal notes or underlining. The book's covers show its age but it is structurally sound and whole. It is interesting to note that Sparks was one of those American intellectuals who received the French author Alexis de Tocqueville during his 1831-32 visit to the U.S. that resulted in the classic "Democracy In America.". <br/> <br/> Little Brown & Co. hardcover

The primary literary interest in Crombie's little book of poetry is John Gardner the sometimes controversial upstate NY author of "Grendel" "The Sunlight Dialogues" and "On Moral Fiction." He wrote the preface for the retired schoolteacher's and Gardner's aunt book in the year before he died in a motorcycle accident in Pennsylvania. First Edition First Printing. About 5 1/2 x 8 1/2 inches 55 pages bound in white lightweight card with a black & white drawing of a woman and small tree on the edge of a body of water on the front cover a small black & white photo of Crombie and a blurb from Gardner on the back. Covers show a touch of edge wear and a bit of light scraching doesn't break the covers' surface o/w covers are clean with no creases bumped corners or tears. Laid-in is a folded and yellowing newspaper article from the Batavia NY Daily News for Oct. 12 1981 reporting the publication of the book and the relationship between Crombie and Gardner. The acids in the aging clipping have stained a rectangular area about 4 x 7 on the volume's title page o/w the text is clean unmarked and complete and without tears creasing or other flaws. As Gardner notes in his preface these poems are not all sweetness and light; there is tragedy and death as well. "The message is everything: this is the life she lived saw felt a personal presentation not an elaborate artifice for tourists to gawk at." Issued in 1890 by several publishers for subscription sales this is the Excelsior edition First Edition Thus First Printing. 802 pages; 6 1/2 x 9 inches original tan cloth pictorial boards blindstamped in black and gold; text includes a frontispiece portrait photo of Stanley a colored fold-out map p.33 and numerous black & white illustrations. Much of the black and gold now flaked from front cover and spine moderate wear at edges and corners some light soiling. End pages show light foxing and soiling with a faint number written in center of front pastedown. Text edges are somewhat soiled pages llightly age-tanned in margins o/w boards and text are clean complete and unmarked. Binding is tight and square. A very collectable copy. This biography of President Garfield represents a publishing puzzle: According to Brisbin's biographer Benjamin Foster Brisbin published his Garfield biography with the title "From the Towpath to the White House a Biography of James Garfield" in 1880 in Philadelphia and also in 1880 in Hartford as "The Early Life and Public Career of James A. Garfield." In 1881 following Garfield's assassination Hubbard Bros. the Philadelphia publisher re-issued the book with additional material under the name William Ralson Balch an editor and journalist who had covered Garfield's political career and assassination. However the new edition did not mention Brisbin as author Balch being credited as sole author a stance he maintained throughout his life though according to Foster his claim was denied by the Library of Congress. Subsequently our copy of the book was issued titled on the spine "Life and Public Services of General Jas. A. Garfield" and "Balch" alone as author. The book's title page has the title as "The Life and Public Career of Gen. James A. Garfield" with Brisbin as author of Garfield's rise from obscurity to Union Army general and then to the presidency and then "together" with a full account of his election to the presidency through to his assassination written by William Ralson Balch. The copyright is still 1880 though Garfield's death was in July1881 and a brief "To The Reader" note by Balch stating the events surrounding Garfield's death "has been gleaned from the newspapers necessarily with some haste." So the question of authorship of this edition of the book which can be characterized as a First Edition Thus remains an open question. 681 pages 5 1/2 x 7 3/4 inches green cloth-covered boards with a black stamped border and Garfield's signature in gilt on the front cover and gilt lettering and black decoration on the spine. 28 black & white illustrations including the frontispiece. Boards and spine show very moderate surface and edge wear. Binding is tight hinges intact. Goodwin." 6 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches 583 pages including appendices and index in olive-green cloth-covered boards with gilt lettering on front cover and spine and gilt border framing front cover illustration of herd of elephants in a forest. Boards show only minimal surface and edge wear lightly bumped corners and spine ends. Previous owner's signature on fep; pastedowns and end pages lightly foxed. Europe. Very Good. 1978. On offer is a sensational 122 page hippie era 'Grand Tour' manuscript diary handwritten by a young woman named Linda Westergren determined to let it all hang out in the spirit of the 1970s drug sex and rock 'n roll era. Written while in her early 20s the diary is a study in hippie era travel and indulgence and the writer shares it all. The trip to Europe is with a friend and they travel around Europe staying in hostels tents and in train stations. The title page boasts: "Trip to Europe starting July 31st 1978. Written mostly on trains in depots and tents!" They meet several men smoked hashish and pot drank and drugged quite a bit and the writer describes their travels sometimes in a quite rank and salty language. She really holds nothing back. As with so many young people coming out of "the sixties" which many call the age of "irresponsible excess and flamboyance." This diary documents it well. The diary consists of handwritten pages and starts when they arrive in New York City getting ready for there adventures in Europe. Here are some snippets: 1978 "July 31st We arrived in New York about 11:00 A.M. We had to get J.'s youth hostel card downtown so we took a cab robbery. Wrong place! Got to ride the infamous subways twice even. At JFK we had a four hour layover and didn't get out till 4:00 A.M. We were the only ones awake and drinking on the plane. The day a trial in patience!" "August 2nd Arrived in Paris with one change over in Metz France at 8:30. We thought we had troubles before get a load of this! Well this time we had enough sense to exchange our money to francs but we have no idea what they're worth. By noon we were ready to come home. 99 percent didn't speak English the youth hostels are $10 a nite too much and the campsites are too far away. To top it all off we can't figure out how many francs the phone takes. We got a tip on a reasonable hotel but couldn't find the number and there is no information operator in Paris. Lugging our packs 38 pounds around no sleep really and nothing in English we were almost in tears. Well got a hold of the hotel now the subway. Naturally went the wrong way but we made it. Ah no showers. Into the sink we go showers cost more. Feel better! Went to the market and got fresh fruit bread cheese and dynamite salami. Now were getting the "franc" down
with a full stomach and soft bed J's already passed out at 7:00 and I'm close behind. Things are looking better!" Brussels Amsterdam camp site "hash" Copenhagen Tivoli "August 9th Took a train out at 11:19 P.M. last night and arrived at 8 A.M. Didn't get much sleep on the floor. The train was packed. D. was going to Oslo but decided to go with us to Stockholm. Found a camp right near the beach Camp Angby. We're really camping out this time no hostels yet. Right in the middle of evergreens over the rocks and tree roots. We washed clothes on the 4th and they never completely dried so everything was starting to smell and almost mildew. Every time we tried to hang them out it rained so today we had to wash everything all over again by hand. Thank God it was sunny. By the time that was done it was about 5:00 so we went onto Stockholm to get something to eat. We had Wienerschnitzel. I always thought that was wieners but it's veal in Swedish. Then we went on to an island where Tivoli the Swedish amusement park is. Spent the night in a discothèque. All the songs were in English. Not having much sleep the last two nights headed for camp about midnight. D. decided to stay the night so we had three in our tent. It was pretty cold so we kept even warmer." "August 13th Got up early enough to be into town by 9:00 but German's don't care to pick up hitch hikers I guess. Finally caught a ride then by tram and bus and to the depot by 9:30. Too late! The bus that goes down the Romantic Road to Fussen. Left at 9:00. All the stores are closed on Sunday in Germany so there was nothing to do. Well I decided to buy patches of all the countries we go to and sew them on my pack. Also I met a guy on a train that had a real neat lighter I wanted so I looked at all the shops in Wurzburg. Got a couple but it was still only about 1:00. J. and I decided to take a ride rather than sit in the train depot. Off to Frankfurt. No patches or lighter. Still bored!! Got on another train to Born. Nothing there but a Mac Donald's. Get this. They sold beer. So we sat in Mac Donald's and guzzled beer until we were almost drunk. An hour later got on the train to Wurzburg it's only about 4 hours and passed out. Got in at 1:00 A.M. and slept on the train depot floor until 6:00. Looking up at a German officer at that hour I thought he was going to line me up against the wall!" Zurich "August 16th After walking thru Zurich decided to go to Lucerne. Left about 2:00 and got in about 3:30 and went strait to the camp ground. Put the tent up in the mud no grass. It had been raining here too! With that done we went in their rec-room and ate. Shortly two guys from London came in and two guys from the states. They sat and drank wind and beer and ate. The British guys sounded just like B. Shit! We just drank coffee at first then broke down and bought some wine. Another international party! British are even funnier when they slur their words. J. wanted pot and never got any too bad and Mike kept wanting in our tent while J. was in theirs. But he was so loaded it reminded me too much of Evergreen. Still got to look those guys up in London." "Rode with two chicks that drove us so crazy we had to take 2 Actifed's!" "August 20th Slept till 9:30 but didn't get out of the hotel till 11:30. At least the clothes dried all but the jeans naturally. We were going to take a bus but since we didn't really know where the hell we were we decided to take another cab to the train depot and leave our packs. Found out the bullfights didn't start until 6:00 so we had 6 can't add hours to kill. Went to a fast food and had coffee and that's where we met them!! The waiter-bartenders were the nicest looking guys I think I've ever seen. None of them spoke English but we started to joke with them. We had about 4 stiff drinks and were having a good time. Some how we got it across to them that we like them. They got off at 3:00 so off we went with them to who knows where. I don't think it was either of their apts. But probably Pedro's sisters. Our affair lasted only one hour and we were off again for no apparent reason. We asked them to go to the bullfights with us but reasons unknown again wouldn't so of all places back to the train depot and strait to where they worked. We didn't want tot go up to the counter but could see all the lips flapping. It really hurt our feelings. We left without really saying goodbye and stared walking. Hailed a cab to the bullfights which was real fascinating. Only problem was being a little high at first it almost made me sick. After sobering up it was exciting! We got back to the train depot at 10:00. We were still bummed about those guys. Decided to leave them a note but the mission was never fulfilled. Wasted away too much time and ended up missing the last train and our backpacks were locked in storage and by midnight the train depot was closing. We ended up jumping a fence and another fence for a swim in the pool and about an hours worth of sleep in the grass." Barcelona Carioles Pisa Florence "August 31st Unbelievable but true when we woke up W. was with another friend waiting outside our tent since 8:00. Apologized severely for the day before and tried his best to talk us into staying. Broke camp by 10:30 and went with the guys. Stopped for groceries and back to the fucking park again!! Poor sweet S. was so bummed when we left at 1:00. Exchanged address and off to another adventure as they say! Got to Brindisi at 9:15. From a tip we went to get tickets and barely made the boat at 10:30. Met John just before boarding. When on board met she mentions many names and played 20 questions and drank till 1:00. Fell asleep on the deck to the rocking of the boat. Puke no not really." "September 7th Needless to say we missed the boat and Frank said "I told you you would." The girls needed to go into town so decided to give us a lift. It was raining again. 5 in a VW and 2 backpacks we headed down the mountain. On the way down jewel was driving and coming up on an accident she applied her brakes which had failed and ran into a taxi. Didn't do any damage to the taxi but scary had a black eye. Got the bug to the shop mid-afternoon and went to eat. With the weird schedules of the boats and buses we ended up missing the last bus and no ferries that day. By 9:00 the bug was ready and once again headed up to the campsite by 10:00. J. and I thought we'd never get off the island. Built a fire and slept by it till the boys got back at 4 A.M. They had discovered Onzo on ice. Frank was pretty bombed so I kind of gave him a shi-y time and made him sleep in his own sleeping bag. What a bad as- I am. He said he was glad to see me back though." "September 14th Didn't get up till 11:00. Got our tent up in time for it to rain. The guys walked into town and we took a bath in the ocean. Sun never did shine that day. It stopped raining long enough to wash our clothes in the ocean I might add and to take a sh-t. Gathered wood and tried to build a fire. Made rice and meat etc. with ocean water and couldn't eat it. Too salty. All in all the day was a disaster also. The island has no trees! We call it "Skull Island." "A note to myself. I take this vow today the 7th of November to be back in Europe within 2 years!!!" Her friend decides to head home back to the states and she stays awhile longer with the new friends she's met. On offer is a superb 1938 manuscript relic of the All England Women's Hockey Association team tour of New Zealand Australia handwritten by Greta Huggins who was the team's goalie. The author does a fantastic job of detailing the trip from the boarding of the out going ship to the return and everything in between on 254 hand numbered pages. Dated April 28th through September 16th 1938 the book states at the outset "A.E.W.H.A. Hockey Team Including the Official Touring Team Tour of New Zealand and the Unofficial Tour of Australia." He narrative describes all the trials and tribulations of a big group of young women travelling around thee world and confined together for almost five months. The diary starts on a more official level but it becomes Greta's diary very soon. A great read and a great adventure for the women. COPENHAGEN DENMARK. Very Good. 1939. On offer is a super original manuscript artefact of World War II being the handwritten diary of Vice Admiral H.A. Nyholm Commander in Chief of the Royal Danish Navy and a hero of the Resistance during the German Occupation written when serving as a Commander of the submarine "Havfruen" or "Mermaid" from the immediate outset of the war September 1st 1939 until May 11th 1940 thusly encompassing Operation Weserubung the German Occupation of Denmark on April 9th 1940. This historical diary has approximately 50 pages of entries and notes written in the Danish language is unpublished is filled with regular dated observations by Nyholm handwritten in pencil. Together with a fine studio portrait photograph of Nyholm probably taken circa early 1946 Nyholm is wearing the single medal ribbon bar of the Knight of the Order of Dannebrog. The photograph measures approx 16.7 cm's by 10.9 cm. HISTORICAL NOTES: Vice Admiral Hans Alfred Nyholm; Early life and career 1898 - 1945: Hans Alfred Nyholm was born in Copenhagen Denmark on the 15th August 1898. He applied to the Danish Admiralty for service in the Royal Danish Navy on 17th May 1914 and was sent for apprenticeship aboard the Patrol Vessel "Absalon" from 11th July to 2nd August 1914 and to the Naval Barracks for further apprenticeship from 2nd August to 10th September 1914. During this period he was still a school student at the "Galster of Hoboll". It appears that he applied for entrance to the Cadet School in 1915 but it was not till April 1919 that he passed the exam for entrance to the Naval Cadet School and passed in top of his class being appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Naval Officer Corps from 1st October 1919. He was subsequently promoted to Lieutenant 1st Grade in the Officer Corps from 1st October 1920. Nyholm appears to have served in a shore based capacity before he entered the Submarine School at Scoff for training from 15th October 1925 to 1st May 1926 and was subsequently appointed Temporary Commanding Officer of the B Class submarine "Triton" from 8th May 1926 being appointed Commanding Officer from 4th October 1926 during this period from 14th to 20th May 1926 he was put in charge of two United States officers on secondment. Promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Commander from 1st May 1927 he was posted to command of the C Class submarine "Rota" from 3rd June 1927 and to the command of the C Class submarine "Flora" on 2nd May 1928 followed by the A Class submarine "Najaden" on 14th July 1928 and to the C Class submarine "Bellona" from 17th August 1928. On 3rd October 1928 he was appointed to the command of the D Class submarine "Daphne" and would remain with this vessel through to 19th November 1931 during which time he participated in a mission to the Atlas Works at Bremen Germany for new U.T. Appliances and would also attend trials in a new motor at Kiel from 16th February to 17th December 1930 he was on service with the submarine division followed by from October to November 1931 he was Superintendent at the Submarine School for Engineers he was also awarded the Polish Order of Polonia Restituta on 24th September 1930. He was Temporary Commanding Officer of the B Class submarine "Neptun" from 1st February 1931 before returning to command the "Daphne" from 19th December 1931. Appointed to command the D Class submarine "Dryaden" from 21st January 1933 and again the "Daphne" from 13th October 1934 it was for services with this submarine that he was awarded the Belgium Military Decoration 2nd Class on 30th April 1935. Whilst with this submarine he also served as School Superintendent for the Submarine Sea Officers School. From 14th October 1935 through to 10th February 1936 he was again School Superintendent for Submarine Sea Officers School and from 5th November 1935 was appointed Deputy Naval Officer for the construction of the E Class submarines. Reappointed to the command of the "Rota" from the 7th February 1936 and to the command of the B Class submarine "Ran" from 31st January 1936 he was reappointed to the command of the "Dryaden" from 1st April 1936 continuously through to 15th August 1937 during which time he was promoted to the rank of Commander on 17th June 1937. Appointed to the commmand of the B Class submarine "Galathea" from 15th August 1937 and then back to the "Daphne" on 1st April 1938 he returned to the "Dryaden" on 30th July 1938. Appointed to the command of the new H Class submarine "Havmanden" on 8th October 1938 he was serving in command of the B Class submarine "Triton" from 10th December 1938 and was appointed to two other commands the "Havmanden" again from 21st February 1939 the "Bellona" again from 6th May 1939 and when war was declared in Europe in September 1939 was serving aboard the then brand new H Class submarine "Havkalen" with which vessel he would remain until the occupation of Denmark by Germany in April to May 1940. Nyholm's final appointment prior to the disbandment of the Danish Navy by the Germans was as Head of the Submarine Division from 11th May through to 16th September 1940. For his long and distinguished service aboard submarines Nyholm was appointed a Knight of the Order of Dannebrog on 2nd April 1940. DENMARK UNDER THE OCCUPATION: Nazi Germany's occupation of Denmark began with Operation Weserubung on 9 April 1940 and lasted until German forces withdrew at the end of World War II following their surrender to the Allies on 5 May 1945. Nyholm's services during the German Occupation: The best written evidence of Nyholm's service during the German occupation can be gleaned from the original recommendation for the award of the Honourary Member of the Order of the British Empire awarded to Nyholm for his services with Danish Naval Intelligence during the occupation. As Nyholm was specifically working in Denmark covertly in support of the Allies and particularly Great Britain - the British recommendation sums it all up: At the outbreak of war Orlogskapajn Nyholm was personal assistant to the Admiral commanding the Danish Navy. After a short time he was transferred to the Naval Intelligence department to collect intelligence concerning German Fleet movements in Danish waters and to obtain details of the production of German U-Boats in Danish shipyards. On 29th August 1943 when the Germans demobilised the Danish Army and Navy the Danish Naval Commander in Chief gave instructions for certain units of the Danish Navy in Copenhagen harbour to be scuttled rather than allow them to fall into the hands of the Germans. Orlogkaptajn Nyholm was one of the officers responsible for the successful execution of this order. Orlogskapitajn Nyholm then set to work to establish Resistance Groups among naval officers and men. These groups were used for the collection of intelligence and for training as guerilla troops in the event of an invasion of Denmark by the Allies. At the end of 1943 the naval and military intelligence organisations combined and Orlogskapitajn Nyholm was appointed to a senior post on the combined staffs. In response to a request from the British Naval Intelligence Division the network of the Danish Naval Intelligence was considerably increased and detailed reports of all German shipping movements were sent to England three times a day. In December 1944 several of his colleagues were arrested and some were shot. Orlogskapitajn Nyholm himself was arrested with compromising papers on him but he managed to swallow these. He was subjected to such brutal torture that it is unlikely he will ever recover from the effects but he steadfastly refused to betray his comrades. He was finally sent to Neuen Gamme where once more he was very badly manhandled but again refused to divulge any compromising information. He remained in Neuen Gamme until the capitulation. Orlogskapitajn Nyholm's outstanding services in procuring high-grade naval intelligence was of the greatest value to the Allied cause. At all times he displayed the greatest bravery and self-sacrifice and his conduct has been a source of great inspiration to his comrades.' The United States of America in awarding him the Medal of Freedom with Bronze Palm state this: 'Captain Hans A. Nyholm Danish Navy for exceptionally meritorious achievement which aided the United States in the prosecution of the war against the enemy in Continental Europe until 5th May 1945. Captain Nyholm accomplished the duties assigned to him with outstanding and distinguished success thereby materially aiding the United States in the war against the enemy and in the eventual liberation of Denmark. His fortitude diligence perseverance and energy in dangerous and difficult circumstances reflect the highest credit upon him and the Allied Armed Forces.' For his distinguished war services Commander Hans Nyholm was promoted to the rank of Commander Captain on 23rd May 1945 and awarded the Danish Medal of Good Service in the Navy on 23rd January 1946; the Officer of the Legion D'Honneur by France on 27th November 1946; the Medal of Freedom with Bronze Palm by the United States of America on 20th December 1946; and the Honorary Member of the Order of the British Empire M.B.E. by Great Britain on 30th May 1947. In addition he was awarded the title of Dannebrog Man on 22nd January 1948. The United States award is one of only 16 given to Danish recipients. Post Occupation services and achievements: Captain H.A. Nyholm Knight of Dannebrog and Dannebrog Man continued in the service of the reformed Royal Danish Navy post 1945. He was appointed to the command of the Royal Yacht "Dannebrog" on 14th January 1948 twice serving in this role the second time being in the Summer of 1949. No doubt as a result of Royal visits he was awarded the Royal Order of the Sword Swedish 2nd Class by Sweden on 16th June 1948 and the Commander of the Order of Saint Olav by Norway on 25th August 1948 though both of these awards may also have been belatedly in recognition of his war services. He had also been promoted to Naval Commodore on 18th February 1948. Promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral on 15th June 1950 he was appointed to the Command of the Danish Navy Coastal Fleet on 22nd September 1950 and was subsequently put in command of the Royal Danish Navy on 19th December 1951. He had been awarded the Commander 2nd Class Grade of the Order of the Dannebrog on 29th January 1951. Nyholm would remain Head of the Danish Navy & Chief of Naval Staff through to his retirement in 1961. Promoted to Vice Admiral on 1st June 1958 during his service as Head of the Danish Navy he would be grated the following Honours and Awards: from Denmark: Commander 1st Grade of the Order of the Dannebrog on 29th January 1956; Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog on 29th January 1961; Norway: Grand Cross of the Order of Saint Olav on 11th September 1958; Sweden: Commander Grand Cross of the Order of the Swedish Sword in 12th December 1961; United States of America: Commander of the Legion of Merit on 18th December 1959; Brazil: Grand Commander of the Order of Naval Merit on 26th April 1956; and from the Netherlands: Grand Cross of the Order of Orange-Nassau on 24th October 1958 and the Grand Officer of the House Order of Orange in June 1953. Vice Admiral H.A. Nyholm Grand Cross of the Order of the Dannebrog and Dannebrog Man retired on 21st February 1961 and died aged 66 in 1964. On offer is an interesting original group of three 3 1907 through 1910 birding journals handwritten by Edna Huntington Merrell the daughter of Edward Huntington Merrell 1835 - 1910 who was a reverend but also the President of Ripon College in Ripon Wisconsin between 1876 - 1891. He was married to Ada Clark Merrell. All of his children also went to Ripon College including Ada his daughter. Edna did her bird watching around the state of Wisconsin and also on campus. There are also many names of other birders when they would go in groups. All told there are 280 handwritten pages but her entries stop abruptly in March of 1910 the month her father died.
