‎FALKLAND ISLANDS MALVINAS STH ATLANTIC ANTARCTICA. Very Good. 1948. On offer is a very unique pair of original 1948 - 1949 manuscript relics of Antarctic exploration being a diary and typed proposal with tucked in ephemera handwritten by "Wm. Gwynn Thomas Base F Argentine Islands West Graham Land" a crew member of the British Falkland Island - Argentine Island Base Camps for supply and research to the Antarctic Region. The main book is a handwritten diary and then there is a typed diary of a special expedition. The author does an exceptional job putting the reader right in the thick of this most interesting and historically well known island group. Dated February 24th 1948 through January 22nd 1949 he writes approximately 100 pages this is a triplicate book ruled feint lines - the carbon has only been used to copy one sheet at a time not triplicate of everyday life from the mundane daily chores on what they ate weather the dogs they had with them the maintenance tasks they had to undertake etc. and the many trials and tribulations of one living in a weather challenged remote and contested area. Along with the book there is a typescript journal on loose sheets of paper. By way of an introduction it begins: 'The John Biscoe arrived at Base F this evening and we met the chaps who were leaving when we took over. I went ashore fairly early and stayed chatting with the boys until quite late. The four who had been here a year seemed very pleased that their time was up & that they were getting out of it at last. Burd met the base leader Watson and Reeve the two general assistants and Stock wireless operator. From their tales I gather they have had quite a pleasant year one or two complaints but nothing serious. Most of the time we were together Stock & I discussed the radio set up here; he said he had managed to keep communications going very well during the year but did not have much to say in praise of the transmitter which in his opinion was too low powered for this job and suggested a bigger transmitter would greatly ease the work. March 31 It has been very cold today but I managed to keep fairly warm. Dave and Frank caught four seals this afternoon and had a bit of a job getting them back through the brash ice. April 1 Frank overhauled the small German engine today but it is of no use there's more rust than engine. I worked on the Villiers and had great success for a change. August 29 Base A party have got back safely so the 'panic stations' is over. Apparently they had been cut off and have had quite a time. September 16 There was a code message in today from base E telling of arrangements for a new Base K and also saying that I would be going to Signy a subantarctic island in the South Orkney Islands next year.Nov 2 .Jumbo brought back some sea urchins a limpet and a very strange looking item in the shape of an overgrown worm. We haven't decided what it might be yet but we have pickled it for future reference. We had penguin steaks livers and hearts today and a few eggs found in the victims. The taste of these compare favourably with the corresponding items in a chicken. Personal opinion only Dave did a pilot balloon ascent using a Langersed 150" balloon it reached 15000 feet before disappearing into some cloud.' Included in the journal are also 2 blank documents entitled 'COLONY OF THE FALKLAND ISLANDS AND ITS DEPENDENCIES JUDICIAL OATH. I. do swear that I will well and truly serve Our Sovereign lord King George VI in the office of Justice and Peace and I will do right to all manner of people after the laws and usages in force in this Colony without fear or favour affection or ill-will. Sworn at. The typed document is entitled Base D Hope Bay Grahamland Diary for the 5th Sledge Journey. The proposal was that a party of five with four teams should set out on a journey to Snow Hill Island with the object of completing the survey and geology of Ross Island.Weds Sept 1st to Thurs Sept 30th including a summary page on number of days miles made good total miles accumulative average etc & a report on the Condition of Hut of Swedish Expedition on Snow Hill Island. This document does not seem to be for the same year as the larger journal as there is no mention of a Sledge trip in there for September. HISTORICAL NOTES: RRS John Biscoe 1944 1584 tonnes operated from 1947-55. Named after the English explorer John Biscoe who discovered parts of Antarctica in the early 1830s. When a party of British scientists attempted to land from John Biscoe at Hope Bay Graham Land on February 2 1952 an Argentine shore party fired shots over their head ref Wikipedia There is a hand drawn map of the Argentine Islands where Base F is marked. ‎1945 ORIGINAL PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM AND MANUSCRIPT MEMORY BOOK HANDWRITTEN BY ONE YOUNG WOMAN'S REICHSARBEITSDIENST - RAD - REICH WORKERS SERVICE SISTERS ON HER DEPARTURE‎

‎HERMAGOR AUSTRIA. Very Good. 1945. On offer is an original relic of Nazi Germany and the Third Reich's control and manipulation of young German women and men being a handmade photo album and memory book of a young woman's identified as Erinerung von Deinen time in the RAD the Reichs Arbeitsdienst Reich Workers Service which was created by the Nazis to combat massive unemployment particularly amongst the youth. Kids graduated from school at about 18 and finished with BDM girls or Hitler Jugend boys and were conscripted for a year into a work camp. The German RAD during the Second World War was an auxiliary formation which provided support for the Wehrmacht. The female section of the RAD with "training-education" camps RAD/HJ for girls where more used in supportive tasks such as service for civic military and agricultural projects and often in caring for children of farmers who were soldiers. The RAD was classed as Wehrmachtgefolge literally Armed Forces Auxiliaries. Auxiliary forces with this status while not a part of the Armed Forces themselves provided such vital support that they were given protection by the Geneva Convention. Some including the RAD were militarised. This particular camp was for young women and was in Hermagor in south-west Austria. The young women who wrote in this created a book of memories for a favoured girl who was leaving the group around the end of March 1945. There are some poems about friendship by famous poets like Goethe others appear to be original written by the young women themselves and all are for the recipient to remember her comrades from the work service. Historians and researchers of the era will find an interesting artefact of Hitler's plan to create an ideal German Community Volksgemeinschaft. Women were key to Hitler's success and as such all German girls were obliged to go to a Work Camp during WWII to do their "tour of duty" usually about a year. They were "trained" to be perfect German girls perfect housewives they had to be "real" German Austrian and even others were obliged to go to these camps. Hundreds of camps in Germany followed the same program from washing farming sports to political lessons cooking mountain climbing and so on. Interesting and enigmatic Mr. Sleeper kept the two books one being sporadic with blocks of time missing while the other having been shared it seems by Mr. Sleeper and an unidentified partner. The shared book is almost fully written while the former is perhaps 50% written. Both include daily weather election news local news yellow fever deaths specified local events and a great deal about the Navy Yard where Mr. Sleeper spent a great deal of time. While the name of the naval yard is never specified it appears from other references to be Portsmouth and not Boston many mile further south. ‎HADLEY MASSACHUSETTS MASS MA. Very Good. 1938. Softcover. On offer is an interesting historical manuscript diary of a young Polish-American woman named Josephine D. Nycz who lived with her parents in Hadley Massachusetts. In many ways a very typical hard-working girl-next-door and new generation American experience as she details her life: often going dancing with her group of friends; celebrated her 26th birthday at White Eagle Dance; she notes that she bought some liquor that night; lots of hard work he started work at the Seville Restaurant evenings at Paul's Cafe Whately Inn Bay State Hotel Cozy Corner Grochmal's etc. In spring she's setting out onion plants all day and in summer weeding onions and then clipping them. And she digs potatoes. On June 22 after Smith College closes for summer no more work at restaurant. On July 20th she had Warsaw Poland on the radio. In fall she's screening onions then back to work at Seville. Of particular interest to local historians and collectors are her entries that start on Sept. 18 and continues until Sept. 21 when the disastrous "Long Island Express" Hurricane of 1938 blows through. On Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. the dike holding back the Connecticut River breaks. Flooding everywhere crops washed out barns blown down no phone or lights. Ten people slept at home. According to records the 3000 people of Hadley were evacuated to Amherst as result of flooding. Standard small diary with color maps calendar. ‎FARMINGTON MAINE ME. Very Good. 1913. On offer is a super archive of ten 10 manuscript diaries handwritten by Theodore Stewart an architect and carpenter from Farmington Maine and who must have been very well thought of given he worked on so many houses and buildings in the area. He was born in 1841 making him in his 70's when he wrote these and he was drafted for the civil war on July 1st 1863. He had 5 children and was married to Lydia Baldwin for over 50 years until her death in 1916 which was caused by heart disease. A carpenter by trade he must have worked for everyone at one time or another including F Stanley Banks Drug Store E Hardey Dr Pratt Post Office Town Schools Town water pipes E E Flood H A Titcomb 1st National Bank People National Bank Tarbox Whittier D M Bonney Stoddard House New England Telephone Blacksmith Electric Light co and the Baptist Church just to mention a few. He worked on the floats and steamer house doors and the walks. He worked on the cabins and cottages in Oquossoc Haines Landing Rangeley and the Kemankege plus he did a lot of fishing. He also mentioned that one of the Titcombs was killed by an auto in 1915. Lydia died in 1916 and he kind of went downhill from there. Then he lost a daughter in 1918. Historians and researchers of the area will find his diaries a history of progress of the town and its inhabitants in the early 20th Century as he was constantly building throughout all of them; 1913 1914 1915 1916 1917 1918 1919 1920 1921 and 1923. All are full except the last one and that has entries in it until February 16th. He was 82 years old then. The books are 3¼" x 7½". ‎CAMBRIDGE COUNTY SCHOOL WATERTOWN MASS. MA. Very Good. 1905. On offer is a historically significant diary from the main founder of the British League of Unitarian and Other Liberal Christian Women commonly known as the British Unitarian Women’s League Helen Brooke Herford. In addition to founding the organization Herford worked as Secretary from the League's inception in 1908 until 1929 accomplished a tremendous amount of good due to her tireless effort and enthusiasm. She helped set up the Correspondence Bureau during the First World War oversaw the publication of many pamphlets and help set up District Leagues establish the organization’s Monthly Letter and the League Annual Meeting and much more. By the time of Herford’s death 171 Branches 11 District Leagues and 2 Neighbourhood Leagues were in existence. This diary is from 1905 three years before she would found the organization when Herford was only 19 years living in Watertown Massachusetts and attending the Cambridge County School. It details the parties dances gossip crushes concerts church visits and many other aspects of the life of a liberal 19 year old female student. It certainly shows a different and very formative side of a woman who would go on to do so much good in her life. In addition to the normal entries of student life Herford also spends a significant amount of time traveling by train across America from Massachusetts to Portland Oregon stopping in Billings Montana for two weeks to stay with family. Helen goes to church often but does not speak too much on her personal beliefs. Like many young women her age she is more concerned with friends boys and school than she is with her religious beliefs. This diary contains approx 70 pages of handwritten entries some pages of which are full and double sided others just a few lines or paragraphs. Also included is a hand drawn floor plan of her house in Watertown Massachusetts. Her enthusiasm for the landscape of Montana would be realized when later in life she ended up owning a dude ranch near Limestone Stillwater County Montana. The book's leather cover shows some wear but is generally in good condition. All pages are intact and free of any major damage or discoloration. The diary is not full but does contain some interesting background information about her early life. TEXT: “Jan 1 1905. Went to bed this morning very early after Nannies party. Nannie and L went back with Whitney & Scott to sleep at the Henderson's because there were so many to sleep at the Whitneys. We decided we would not go in the any house again until next year so as it was only 15 past eleven we walked slowly to the station sat there for awhile that went to H’s and sat on the door step unit 12 Saturday 31 was Nannies birthday.”; “Jan 5 1905. School begun today and most of the girls are back but Edith Stor hasn't come yet and I wish she would come. We played around after noon and at dinner I had my presents Crawford from the four Rodgers Pride and Prejudice from Alice and Patty Sense & Sensibility from miss Hays and Miss Holbrook.”; “Jan. 13 1905. Went to Cambridge to see Rose with Elizabeth Mabel was there and we had tea. At the square waiting for a car Mr R. Moot came up and spoke to Elizabeth. Nell Murphy was here for the dance when we got back. Dressed after dinner Helen was here for the first one she has been down to only two of all the boys.”; “July 19 1905. Arrived in Billings Stayed in Billings for two weeks then started West for Portland Tacoma. The scenery from Livingston is very good some places in the mountains we could see three tracks below us where we had been. The prettiest scenery at Livingston and Bozeman and along the Green River. From Livingston we had two engines in front of and one behind part of the way. Spent the night in Tacoma and then took a train to Centralia and changed there for Hoquiam where we took the boat off to West Port Had met mother Mrs. Armstrong - Brooke & Jack half way there from West Port Edina visited on going through to life saving station.” Backround: Helen Brooke Herford was the main founder of the British Unitarian Women's League. Helen Brooke Herford worked as Secretary from the League's inception in 1908 until 1929 and much had been accomplished due to her tireless effort and enthusiasm - the setting up of the Correspondence Bureau during the First World War the publication of pamphlets the setting up of District Leagues establishing the Monthly Letter and the League Annual Meeting and much more. 171 Branches 11 District Leagues and 2 Neighbourhood Leagues were in existence and the Executive Committee had become the Central Committee. Members were encouraged to keep in touch with voting women who left home to take up work firstly in this country and then isolated women overseas. Work developed in many directions including the issuing of a monthly newsletter. With the advent of World War I branches rose to the special needs of the time including necessary articles made and distributed serving men welcomed into homes or visited in hospital. She was also the granddaughter of Unitarian minister and noted preacher and author who served several important churches in Great Britain and America. Her younger brother Oliver 1860-1935 a poet writer and illustrator in the USA was popularly known as “the American Oscar Wilde.” Her sons John “Jack” Herford and William Herford were sheep ranchers in New Mexico and later ran a dude ranch in Yellowstone County Montana. Beatrice Herford 1867–1952 a daughter became a Broadway actress. Following her education in Germany and Boston Massachusetts Helen Herford returned to Montana where she taught school in Carbon County and worked on her parents' ranch. Herford gained much of her experience in the Alliance of Unitarian Women in the USA. In 1929 she and a cousin Helen Underwood Wellington entered into a partnership to establish a dude ranch near Limestone in Stillwater County Mont. The Swinging H Ranch operated until 1937 when financial pressures forced Helen Herford to suspend operations and sell. She returned to teaching afterwards and died in Columbus Montana in 1972. Her archive of papers and correspondence is held at the Montana State University Library.
