‎LOS ANGELES CALIFORNIA CA. Very Good. 1969. On offer is the unique original manuscript diary and journal of K. Spivey handwritten in 1969 during her stay and then out patient treatment and therapy for psycho-sexual mental illness. 40 years old during the writing which begins August 10th through to October 2nd 1969 at the Neuropsychiatric Institute at UCLA now called the Jane & Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience & Human Behavior. It is fascinating to read the tug and pull of this woman's mind and body in this sensational narrative over almost 150 leaves and 250 or so pages of entries and art in this otherwise ordinary 8.5 x 6 inch leatherette blank book. K. as she signs herself one piece of enclosed ephemera mentioning her doctor shows a name but it is somewhat indistinct a professional dancer is intelligent sensitive self aware but deeply troubled. She quotes conversations in part identifying the doctors of which there a small number especially at first and then reveals her inner thoughts on the answer or the feeling the question provokes or her thoughts on the questioner. She reveals in large swaths of narrative the specifics of her problems relating to her father inappropriate if not incestuous behavior and her contemporary attitudes on the men she meets and the judgments she arrives at regarding them. Throughout the book are a number of poems dreams death wishes original art and drawings which show real talent and creativity notes for ideas but also the troubles she has along with a background of her professional dance life. Researchers and collectors will be astonished at the intimacy and appreciate the rare raw view into this individual's mind. Readers will also observe that the journal in many ways is representative of the era: mentions of Nixon and self help group meetings and the writer's own new found explicitness towards sex seems almost a story of the 60s sexual revolution. ‎OAHU HAWAII GUAM MARIANNES ISLANDS. Very Good. 1917. On offer is the original 1917 manuscript diary handwritten by Mrs. France B. Burgess who was married to Dr. Paul Burgess. We believe he was a chemist or other scientist as opposed to a medical doctor. They are a rather young couple she being 23 years old and they enjoy their 3rd anniversary while writing this book. Collectors and historians of Hawaii and the World War I era will find a unique diary on a number of levels being one part home front diary another part detailing life in Hawaii and lastly a major train travel diary as they embark on a round trip cross country trip to Paul's family in the Northeast USA. They live on the island of Oahu Hawaii and we suspect he worked for Pacific Guano & Fertilizer Co. making some trips to the lab and attending the 'chem' party. The diary is a premium leather fold over style diary with gilt stamp of the company. The book was created it appears to celebrate the company's recent awards. Our author details a charming life of some work mostly charitable and some personal as Frances does a lot of sewing and working with clothing. She teaches dancing at St. Elizabeth's to children and she volunteers or does some works with the Red Cross. The diary mentions things like seeing eclipses going for "machine"car rides picnics on the beaches trips to the Outriggers Canoe Club they go to a carnival see an ocean liner come in leave on an ocean liner even in paradise the first World War looms: they see a captured German ship being towed. Collectors and historians of the era will note an interesting trip from west to east as they make trip by train across the U.S. to see Paul's relatives in the Providence/Greenville Rhode Island area return home and see Charlie Chaplin. Here are some snippets: 'took auto trip to Haleiwa-ate lunch on the beach.went swimming with Mrs. Phillips Kellar Marshall Jamison at Outrigger.gym in the morning.Mrs. Stephenson.Mrs. Guild came and we sewed.went to splendid stereoptican lecture at the Y.W.C.A. on "Hawaii" by Baker.Wilson.Paul sick.Grace went to Party.played croquet & Parcheesie.served chocolate and Marguerites.came home with sick headache.took ride to Kapiolani Park and listened to band.saw Eclipse.took ride out to Kaimuki.went up to the concert & "Hula" dandce at the Pleasanton.Mrs. Morgan.started in the machine out to Waianae but was so muddy had to come back.spent the afternoon with Mrs. Cornelison and had tea.little Edith Guild stayed with me as the nurse didn't come.Mrs. Jamieson & Mrs. Tracy.All of us went to the C.U. Women's Society at Mrs. Atherton's.felt so mean in the evening.sewed and mended all morning.Miss Dewing Matthews Doc & I decided to go swimming.went up to the "Haw Tree" & took some pictures.took a machine ride in the afternoon up to the Pali.I went to see Blanche Sweet in "Public Opinion".took a ride all around Fort Shafter Pearl Harbor & Ft. Came on clear around the island & up the Pali.saw the loveliest waterfalls up Nuuanu.Paul went to a Chem. Banquet so I had dinner with them.Went to Women's Society at C.U. & had very nice time Rolled Bandages.Paul & I took a ride & got some Hershey.Mar. 19--It just poured the hardest rain of the year. We could hardly get home the water was so high.went to see Wilson's at their new house.Apr. 2--22 of us here at the house had a chowder supper for Mrs. Marshall & Miss McNamara out at Outrigger had mock wedding after.took Mrs. Marshall up Punch Bowl.went shopping thru Chinatown.took some flowers up to Charle's grave.went to "movies". Saw Sessue Hayakawa the Japanese & he was fine.went with Mrs. Ferris to Red Cross & made bandages all morning. Passed the Lurline towing the German "Holsatia" to-day.19--passed the Matsonia on its way to Honalulu this morning early.May 22-arrived in San Francisco; Bell & Ruth wre in Berk.Berkley to meet us.Gridley's came over to see us in the eve.went to The Stewart for lunch; called on Dean Hunt in the evening.had dinner at the H of Brau & then to Columbia; saw Henry Miller in "A Better Understanding".had hot chocolate at "Pex" in Berk. about 12 & came home.had dinner with Dr. Lipman at the Faculty Club.June 2--Ruth & Bill saw us off at the UC. Opal Frost.saw alot of Urbana people.stayed at Calvin'ssaw LOTS of people in Champaign area including her aunts etc.June 14--passed right by the Old Erie Canalafter leaving Chicagoall day.saw Niagara Falls from the cartrain car windows got into Prov.Providence Rhode Island & telephoned Burgess' Father B. & Albert met us at the car & Esther & Mother B. were at home. Had crackers & Milk.invited over to grandma S's for bean supper; a typical New E.England supper.June 17--Paul went with me to hear sermon at St. Thomas Church Greenville before Temple Lodge of Af&Am.went to Kingston in the Ford.went down to Rhode's on the Pawtuxet.20th--Esther Paul & I went with Father B. up on Brown Campus; saw wonderful old books in John Hay library.drove out to Foster the old Burgess homestead.went to see house were Paul was born.24th--went to Rocky Point went on the Scenic Railway.26th--went to Plymouth Massachusetts where we saw Pilgrim Monument Plymouth Rock Burial Hill & Pilgrim Hall the museum. A trip of over 100 miles in the machine.invited up to R.D. Frosts farm about 10 mi. from Prov. for dinner & after walked up to Anawan Rock where the Indian Chief of that name was killed.Paul came down with an acute attack of lumbago after packing the trunk.July 7--left Greenville to station in Prov. had lunch in Boston.8th--after arriving in Chicago left on the California Limited.10th--thru New Mexico and Arizona saw 5 or 6 Indian Villages of Adobe; stopped at Albuquerque; lots of Indians thru this section.11th--Thru Mojave Desert and so hot; passed the Needles; got into Berk. about 11 and went right up to the Shattuck Hotel for the night.16th--had lunch at the Pig'n Whistle.17th--went to the boat; we waved to them as long as we could see them.21st--had deck sports in the afternoon. Doc won the "monkey stunt" & received a box of cigars for it.23rd--saw a transport pass in the night signaling us with a rocket.24th--arrived in Honolulu about 7.Aug. 2--went to Red Cross in the A.M.7th--moved in the afternoon & got all fixed-up.Sept. 26--my 23d birthday. Doc gave me Canton China etc.October 13 1917--Took Grace & Mrs. Mac to the boat. Saw Charlie Chaplin & his fiancee causing quite an excitement. Miss Farley was married to-day & they were on the same boat." There are some neat entries in the back of the diary like: a list of books read in 1917; a few recipes; a list of "Gifts to Take East" when they went to Rhode Island. Some of the gifts included: Japanese tea set tiny Outrigger Canoe & hula girl Japanese Umbrella. There is also a list of people she sent Christmas Cards to. Her cash accounts are loaded with items they spent money on. There is a list of the expenditures it cost them to take their trip to the United States in May; and amount for their "Eats Coming West" on their way back. On offer is a very good pre Depression era European travel diary handwritten by Emma June Hibb of Manatee Florida not too far from Sarasota. Mrs. Hibb is a keen observer and dedicated diarist traveling with a large group of Floridians from September 6 1927 through October 11th when they return to New York. A quirky writer going from catty commentary - her girlfriend is miffed that they are traveling with so many of the people she can't stand from back in Florida to her observation that some men aboard ship sure do change their attitude when they discover a woman is married and her husband is also aboard ship. Emma also captures some choice moments on tour especially moving a passage wherein a French woman recognizes them for Americans and rushes over to embrace them all the while holding their hands and weeping in a thank you obviously the under current being the strong emotions still attached to the 'Great War' but 9 years in the past. She has the great habit of giving people nicknames based on place or memorable trait - Budwieser Iowa Carolina and West Palm to mention a few. The book has 2 pages filled with autographs from shipmates and Emma overwrites the book proper using the alphabet address area for other daily entries. This is a lovely travel diary of a woman with personality and keen eye. On offer are the riveting 1996-1998 handwritten diaries 2 of a self-destructive drug taking mentally ill and maybe deaf woman we believe to be 19 or 20 years old. She lives in Providence Rhode Island. At one point she signs her name but we will not reveal what we believe it to be as these books are less than 15 years old. These books are an unbelievable probing in-depth look into the mind of a profoundly disturbed woman who is very bright well read well written but extraordinarily troubled. She lays it all out in these journals. Here are some snippets: "April 13th at dad's doing illegal things; spoke to Dr. F_____ gave me 60 paxils; got a note too for blowing off class I should make a copy; still confused to exit my life or go on. It's 50/50; May 16th In Butter woman's partial program; was on 4th on suicide watch. Tried to OD on Paxil 2x; Missed finals. Life really does suck; Memorial Day I made two straight men kiss each other. Matt/Tom had a 3some. No sex. Ran around naked tripin on life. Hung out a window. 4 stories. Should I let the hands go; June 5th I think I need to go back in the hospital. I have too many overdue library books $114 worth and 2 more." Other entries point to getting help from a therapist Sue and the likely hood she has multiple personalities is detailed. She seems to name one Melissa and another named Malice. Later Dr. F______ believes she needs a shrink and Sue cannot give her what she needs. Shockingly she tells another story: 'Hung out with my sister Chriss last night got high watched a movie enjoyed myself. I proud of her not many people give her credit for her accomplishments. She was a deadhead jailed for 2nd degree manslaughter abused physically/mentally by our mother and her divorce. Now she has 3 beautiful kids awesome dead head husband…' In another shocking entry: Dave - he's a shady character. He has a psychotic sense to him. He says I am twisted and evil and he is god's messenger. Why is it important for him to be in the book Why does he love to play. The games that I crave he is craving. He wants to eat my death….He is sick. I am just crazy.' 'I found my old dissecting kit…can't help but want to cut myself….Saw Sue. I switched during the session. I don't think she noticed.' Later in the second book our writer reveals she understands very well about her other personalities and then in another shocker after all the others she reveals that only one of her personalities is deaf! She goes on to revel that her bosses are impressed with how she handles work all the while she is hearing voices. She even begins to call her inner personalities 'the kids' and she writes in her diary that she wishes one of the others would clean the room and pay the bills because she is sick of it. As the second book progresses her mental state declines. She moves near Boston and suggests that if Melissa finds out she will be pissed. She burns some pages with a cigarette it appears she has torn out some later pages but near the end the writing gets more chaotic and then stops with the last paragraph referring to going to wrapped in blanket with fearlessness and a teddy bear for a pillow and then to sleep. Sadly we think this was her end. Journal 1 is about 100 pages and nearly full. Journal 2 is about 120 pages and about 70% full. ‎Lunenberg Jaffrey Boston Massachusetts MA. Very Good. 1900. On offer is a handwritten archive of manuscript diaries written by Charles F. Paige. In all there are seven 7 diaries covering the years 1900 1902 1904 1906 1913 1920 and 1924. These make for a fascinating period collection of an incredibly hard working man who straddles the rural and urban worlds. He is a farmer itinerant worker for other farmers and also works for extended periods on more modern works for the Boston Elevated Railroad Co. Charles is also entrepreneur earning as much as $2.25 per day he pays those who labor for him 50 to 60 cents per day. Truly interesting even in the sporadic fashion of the diaries to see Charles' life evolve and progress. Places he called villages have become towns towns have become cities. So hard a worker is Charles that when in 1904 his father dies January 31 1904 87 years 10 months 25 days old and still Charles goes to work. He notes just 2 months later that Adeline S. ‎TWO 2 ORIGINAL LATE 16TH CENTURY EARLY 17TH CENTURY MANUSCRIPT VOLUMES OF THE NOTED CATHOLIC THEOLOGIAN: TRACTATUS DE DEO and TRACTATUS DE SACRAMENTIS - SUPERB IN VELLUM‎

‎SEGOVIA SALAMANCA SPAIN ESPANA. Very Good. 1599. On offer is a superb late 16th early 17th Century manuscript book in two volumes being the transcribed works of John of Segovia the influential Catholic Theologian who was a professor at the Spanish University of Salamanca represented Castille at the Council of Basel and represented the council in the 1439 Diet of Mainz. He played a large role in the removal of Pope Eugene IV and the placement of Antipope Felix V. Volume One: "Tractatus de Deo" a 333 page work in a fine hand though not necessarily the work of a scrivener the endpapers featuring heraldic and maybe royal watermarks each is topped with a crown very similar to a Spanish heraldic crown of higher nobility. There seems to be the use of quartering and a pallet like central division. Pictured within the escutcheon are castles lions fleur de lis like symbols likely eagles a cross three horizontal circles with the use of borders and orles without the use of supporters or mottoes with other watermarks specifically a star over anchor on interior pages. Volume Two: "Tractatus de Sacramentis" 303 pages both 4to 26.5cm x 20cm. Tucked in the volume is one sheet of paper of identical type which we conclude is a leaf missed in binding or perhaps and erratum paage. Bound in period sheep vellum. There is some general mostly light soiling to the covers one worm hole to the vellum the odd interior fault but overall these volumes are VG. NOTA BENE: John of Segovia - His most important literary work is an extensive history of the Council of Basle "Historia generalis concilii Basiliensis. Libri XVIII" edited by Birk and Beer in "Monumenta conciliorum generalium saeculi decimi quinti: Scriptor." II-IV Vienna 1873-96. On offer is a very interesting original 1967 uncensored manuscript diary of the war in Vietnam handwritten by an unidentified US CIA operative describing his initial time of 2 months on station in South Vietnam. He mentions leaving Goffstown New Hampshire and beginning his 12 day orientation in Saigon going to the Delta and his attempt to get his area opened the writer is dealing with frustration and everyday road blocks that he surprisingly details over 13 pages of legal-sized paper. Much of the content is 'insider' and intimate. While the writer is unknown he is not shy to identify others he is dealing with on the Vietnamese side by name of position and sometimes rank. Of further interest is his acknowledgement of recieving his commission because of his assets in conventional and unconventional warfare. Overall a fascinating look at the American war effort in south-east Asia. ‎1914 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY BY THE COMMANDER OF THE FAMED AND NOTORIOUS HMS AGINCOURT FROM DETERMINED MOBILIZATION TO THE DANGEROUS NORTH SEA‎

‎HMS AGINCOURT THE NORTH SEA. Very Good. 1914. On offer is a superb relic of World War I and British naval history being a manuscript diary kept by the Commander of the Royal Navy's famed dreadnought the 'HMS Agincourt' at the beginning of WWI during her assignment as part of the British Grand Fleet in the North Sea engaging the German Kaiserliche Marine's High Seas Fleet. This diary begins July 29th with a call to mobilize and then there is the immediate outbreak of the war in August 1914 through to December 1914 very neatly written in ink with one photograph some sketches cruising orders and newspaper cuttings. This important historical first hand account was handwritten by George Napier Tomlin RN Rear Admiral 1875 - 1947 gives first hand content and detailed insight into the workings of the British Grand Fleet and documents the confusion that existed in the immediate days after the war broke out on August 5th 1914. Tomlin's original assignment as he notes on the 30th is aboard the HMS Majestic. Tomlin writes regarding the appointment as one: 'which I look upon as an insult. If there is to be a fight I want to be in a fighting ship & not in one recovered from a scrap heap'. Excitingly his assignment changes and he is one of the first aboard a newly 'commandeered' Turkish ship renamed Agincourt. Collectors and historians of the First World War will also delight knowing that diaries unlike letters were not censored. The British had concentrated their Fleet at Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands and 'HMS Agincourt' was sailing back and forth to the Bight of Heligoland to engage the Kaiser's Fleet. Much can be learned about life aboard a British warship as the journal is replete with details about navigational positions fleet details officers' names and positions courts martial administered etc. Much anxiety existed about German submarines and mines and Tomlin's drawings elaborate on mines in the North Sea as well as the British Fortification with wire nets of the Harbour of Buncrana Ireland. Frequent reference is made to the C in C Commander in Charge Jellicoe who had his headquarters on the 'HMS Iron Duke'. The diary also shows the concerns about Zeppelins and mentions their appearance. Visits aboard the 'HMS Agincourt' by 1st Lord Winston Churchill were recorded on September 17 while the ship was anchored at Loch Ewe in Scotland. Finally Tomlin mentions the sinking of various British and German ships among them the German U-18 and the German Battle Cruiser 'SMS Scharnhorst' by British Ships off the Falkland Islands where the famous German Admiral Graf Spee met his fate. Political Background: In 1904 in response to the build-up of the German Kaiserliche Marine's High Seas Fleet it was decided that a northern base was needed to control the entrances to the North Sea. Originally Rosyth was considered for the base and then Invergordon at Cromarty Firth but construction in both places was delayed leaving them largely unfortified by the time of the First World War. Scapa Flow was used many times for exercises in the years leading up to the war. When the time came for the fleet to move to a northern station Scapa Flow was chosen for the main base of the British Grand Fleet even though it was also unfortified. John Rushworth Jellicoe admiral of the Grand Fleet was constantly nervous about potential submarine or destroyer attacks on Scapa Flow and the base was reinforced with minefields artillery and concrete barriers starting in 1914. These fears were borne out when German U-boats twice attacked British ships in Scapa Flow though the attacks themselves did no damage. The first by U-18 took place in November 1914; but the sub was rammed by a trawler searching for submarines while it was trying to enter Scapa Flow causing the submarine to flee and then sink. 12mo 100 pages. ‎MANKATO MANAWA KANSAS KS SEYMOUR WISCONSIN WI. Very Good. 1892. On offer is an archive of six 6 original manuscript diaries handwritten by Andrew C. Walch a newspaper man who worked mostly in Mankato Kansas in the 1890s. The diaries represent 1892 1893 1894 1895 1896 and 1897. The early diary begins with Andrew living in Seymour Wisconsin in the fall he moves to Mankato Kansas. The next four diaries 1893-1896 show him still in Mankato and finally in the 1897 diary he's in Manawa Wisconsin. Andrew is an unstinting diarist rarely failing to write and all the diaries are full save for 1897 which is about ¼ full. Historians and collectors of late 19th Century Kansas and journalism will find an open book in Walch. Here are snippets: "March 18th 1892 Seymour Wisconsin Got up at 4:45 a.m. Helped do the chores and then walked to town and took the train for Black Creek to attend District Lodge. At the depot Edith Standard met us and Charles and I went off with Alfred Holz. We saw John Heintz and his two pretty sisters. At 8:30 met Mr. Burgogne and we went to school until recess then went to lodge. I was appointed press reporter. At 5 o'clock Mary Tubbs Charles Flora Stevenson and I took in the town and at 6:56 took the train for home. Saw Mary to Merehl's store and then went to Mr. Conner's to practice for the church. Afterwards met Chief Fuller Bert Flint and Lafey Sherman and went home. Retired at 11 o'clock." "October 5th 1892 Seymour Wisconsin Got up at 8 o'clock. Went to call on Ella Raw Mrs. Flint and then home to dinner and at 11 o'clock after bidding al the folks "Good Bye" started on my journey. Arrived at Oshkosh at 4 o'clock and put up at the Tremont. Went to the city hall where the G. L. was being held and met all my Good Templar friends. In the evening took the R.W. G. L. degree with 23 others. Frank McKinny and I caught Ruth Willia and Myrtle Thresher and went for a walk and then took them home. Went back to the Tremont and wrote to mother and at 12:50 left for Chicago. Truth one." "November 1st 1893 Mankato Kansas on a trip Ft. Atkinson Wisconsin. Got up at 7:30 and Otto and I took in the town and the High School buildings and then drove over to Whitewater to see Emma Will and George. Took dinner with them and then we drove back to the Fort and at 2:30 took the train for Beloit arriving there at 7:00. Charles met me at the depot and we took in the town a little and went to the salvation army barracks and then went back to the house and had a chat with some of the college boys and Charles and I rolled in about 11:45." "November 13th 1893 Got up at 7 o'clock and after breakfast Charles and I went downtown and up to see the water works and at 10 o'clock I left for Chicago. Went immediately to Simmons and then went down on Wabash Ave. to see Dr. George Westcott. Had a good visit and went to supper with him and met Mrs. Westcott. About 9 'clock went back to Simmons and Maud was the only one home. Visited an hour and at 10:23 left for Mankato. The train was crowed and I had to spend the night in the smoker. Did not get much sleep." "July 15th 1894 Mankato Kansas Got up at 6 o'clock. At 8 Clifford and I stared for Esbon. Went to the U. B. Church and afterwards went out to White Mound and got the girls and drove to Burr Oak. We went to Roger's and had a fine time. About 8 o'clock we went downtown and had some cream and then started back to White Mound. Yum Yum. After bidding Minnie goodnight drove to Esbon where Clifford soon joined me and we rolled in at the Mallory House at 1:15 a.m." "July 4th 1895 Mankato Kansas Worked a little while in the a.m. at the office. Received a letter from mother. Took a bath and then went down and played tennis awhile. At 10 o'clock took Lillie Allen and we went to the picnic in Black's grove. A shower came up and we took refuge in Grundy's granary and had our lunch there. At 6 o'clock it cleared off and about 6:30 14 of us went to Montrose to see the fireworks. Left Montrose about 8:45 and got caught in a terrible storm but we were well protected and did not get wet. Arrived in Mankato at 11:15. Tony Chapman rolled in with me at 12 o'clock. All in all it was one of the most enjoyable fourths I ever spent.""June 27th 1896 Mankato Kansas Got up at 6 o'clock and walked up to Joe Harrison's and got my washing. Worked at the office in the forenoon and in the afternoon went to Concordia. Frank Thompson Bertha Fuson and Nettie Lindgrove were on the train going to Jewell. Lillian and Pearl Allen met me at the depot and I went up with them to supper and spent the evening. Met Billie O'Reilly and rolled in at the Barons House at 11:30. A man was shot on the pavement directly under my window about one o'clock but got away and no one knew how bad he was hurt." "August 24th 1896 Mankato Kansas Worked at the office. In the evening Clifford Lynn and I called on the girls at Dr. Spencer's and we all went to the depot to let the train in and then to the Medicine Show and afterwards for a walk. Viva and I went down to the house and hid the hammock and then went for a stroll and did not get back until 12 o'clock. Cliff and Mara had disappeared so we swung the hammock and had a time until 1 o'clock and I was about to leave when Cliff and Mara showed up. They had been eaves dropping on us. We all had a good laugh and then Cliff and I left." "December 27th 1897 Manawa Wisconsin Worked at the office. Went to Green Bay to attend the Masonic Installation of officers in the evening it being St. John's Day. Had a pleasant time and good supper. Prosser and Dittmer went down from Seymour. Nat Stewart's wife was on the train and Charles and I went over to supper with her. Rolled in at the Commercial Hotel at 12:30." BIO NOTES: Online research finds a biography on Andrew in "Pioneers of Little Wolf Wisconsin" and in part it says: "The first printing office in Manawa was located in a small building back of the old Central House Hotel that is now Peterson's Tavern. From here the Advocate office moved to rooms facing Second Street in the First National Bank which today is the Eastling Building. Mr. Andrew C. Walch came to Manawa from Mankato Kansas in 1896 to take over the Advocate. He began his career in the newspaper field while still a student at Seymour High School. After graduation in 1890 with the first class to finish four years of study at Seymour High School Mr. Walch went to Mankato Kansas where he helped an uncle put out a weekly newspaper continuing there until he purchased The Advocate. Following the Christmas rush of 1898 Mr. Walch locked his print shop and returned to Kansas where he was married on December 27 to Lillian Allen daughter of the Reverend and Mrs. E. W. Allen. Mr. and Mrs. Walch established their home in Manawa and observed their Golden Wedding Anniversary here in 1948. Three years prior to this Mr. Walch had marked his 50th year in newspaper publishing. Around 1915 The Advocate office was moved from the bank building to its present location on Union Street. This building had previously housed a general store and at one time the Diehl sisters operated a millinery store and dress making shop there. For a number of years Mr. Walch was assisted in the business by his eldest son Allen "Pete" Walch. Later the ownership passed to another son James Walch who continued as editor and publisher until February 1956 when he sold the business to Francis Byers of Marion plus other stockholders who formed a corporation." Adding further depth to this broad look at Kansas in the 1890s we find numerous newspaper clippings between the pages. Each diary other then the early one is a nice "Standard" diary hard cover and a good size measuring about 4" x 6 ¾". The 1892 diary has a soft cover and is in good shape measuring about 3 ½" x 5 ¾".
