‎1945-1946 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT AND LOGBOOK OF THE FIRST VOYAGES OF THE U.S.S GENERAL H.F. HODGES AS IT BRINGS TROOPS BACK TO AMERICA FROM MANY DISPARATE PARTS OF THE WORLD RAVAGED BY THE WORLD WAR‎

‎ABOARD THE U.S.S. GENERAL H.F. HODGES AP-144. Very Good. 1945. On offer is a diary and logbook of a crewman on the maiden voyage and many others of the U.S.S. General H.F. Hodges AP-144 in 1945 and 1946. The diary begins on April 6 1945 the day the ‘General H.F. Hodges’ was commissioned. The next day sets the scene for what will come in the rest of the diary: “April 10. As a member of the crew I was put in the 2nd division. We loaded and then went to a few other docks. We went out on our shake down. That was various drill and mostly to get aquainted with the ship and the fellows. We went to San Diego and made Liberty. I made one Liberty in Mexico. Boy what a place that was. From there we went back to Frisco. We loaded again.” On May 10th the ship begins its maiden voyage after taking on troops and a contingent of 42 nurses. Over 3000 troops were on board for this first trip. THe ship heads west towards Indonesia in support of the accelerating push toward Japan in the last few months of the War. The author writes of the ship crossing over the equator and the line-crossing ceremony that follows. The voyage seems mostly simple and easy. The author writes of boxing and wrestling to amuse the troops listening to records and watching movies. At the end of May the ship arrives in Hollandia in Indonesia where the author has some shore leave “got mail. Had 3 cokes.” Then onto Manila where most of the troops on board departed. The author stays with the ship as it picks up troops returning home and casualties of the war “some looked good others not too good” in Tacloban and Biak. The ship sails back for San Francisco on June 18th and the maiden journey ends on July 4th where the author writes of a huge Independence Day celebration. A few days later the second voyage begins as the ship leaves the U.S. for for New York via the Panama Canal “Sure was a sight to see. They really got things down pat.” The ship leaves New York and departs for Naples on a troop rotation voyage. On August 14th as the ship is passing through the Strait of Gibraltar the ship received the news that the war was over. It returned to Boston in late August with passengers from Naples then made two long voyages through the Suez Canal to India bringing home American troops returning back to America when she reached New York on Christmas Eve. The author writes of leaving Boston arriving in Port Said going through the Suez Canal “It took 10 hours to get through” arriving in Calcutta “People live the same. All dirty. The married woman have a red dot between their eyes.” rounding the Cape of India going back through the Suez Canal and returning to New York. The second voyage to India goes roughly the same. After the end of the author’s fourth trip he writes that the ship is moved to Yonkers New York for repairs. It moves back down to New York City at the end of January and the author departs on his fifth and last trip with the U.S.S. General H.F. Hodges going Ceylon and India continuing by way of the Pacific Islands back to the United States and arriving back in Seattle at the end of March 1946. The ship is decommissioned in April and then “transferred at 0900 to Operating Base” in May. On May 10th the author leaves for St. Louis presumably his hometown. The last entry of the book comes on May 15 1946: “At 1530 was Discharged.” The book is in very excellent condition with no dog eared pages no tears and the cover is clean with 4 firm corners along with a tight spine. There are roughly 150 pages in the whole book but only the first 27 pages have writing in them with 14 pages total written in. The handwriting is clean and extremely easy to read throughout and shows no smudging and little fading. The title page reads: “U.S.S. General H.F. Hodges. AP-144. Commissioned 6-April-1945. 50174. Manufactured by the U.S. Printing Office.” On the back page there is a log of the 13 places outside of the United States that the ship docked during the time in which it was commissioned as well as the dates in which the ship was in that port. The book is in very good condition with no dog eared pages little sign of any wear or tear and the cover is clean and with a tight spine. Overall. VG. Sample text: “May 19. I was initiated into the Royal Order of the Shellbacks. It is a world wide thing. They go for it in a big way. They dress all up in costumes. You are called up before the judge an he reads your sentence. Then they send you to the paint and you get a paint job. Then to the stock and cut your hair. What a hair cut. From there you are sent to the cleaners. Then they put you in a chair and maybe cut your hair or put oil an grease all over you. Then they throw you back in a tub of salt water and ducked you until you yell shellback. Then you crawl out and they dose you with a hose to help you a little. You are then a Shellback. Before you are called up they make you do all kinds of things. They call you a Pollywog. The ship an men received the Golden Dragon that is for crossing the date line and equator at the same time. We skipped from Sunday to Tuesday.”; “June 6. Manila. Got 4 hours Liberty. Things sure is a mess. The people are poor as hell. I bought a few things. All of the buildings are blown to pieces or are all shot up.”; “July 4th San Francisco. We arrived in Frisco at 2300. Anchored out. Tied up at the dock at 0800.All the troops were off by noon. They cried and kissed the ground when they got off. Went back out and anchored. Loaded a few supplies. Made two Liberties. The fellows really spent the money. This was the Maiden Voyage and all went well. Some of the fellow are over the hill. Joe Brock is one. ‘End of Maiden Voyage’”; “Aug. 14. We arrived at the Straight of Gilbralter. On the starboard side was French North Africa. On the port side was Portigual and Spain. You could see the Rock good and plain. Got the news that the war was over at 2400. The fellows really had a big time.”; Aug. 17. We passed the Isle of Capri at 0700. We arrived in Naples Italy at 0930. We got Liberty. Had a fairly good time. More whores than anything else. Bought a few things. Started loading the Doggies gear. The cities wasn’t bombed too much just along the water front.”; “ Sept. 21. Arrived at Port Said at 1000 in the morning. Took on oil. And at 1700 started through the Canal. It took 10 hours to get through. Suez Town arrived at 0500. Left at 0700 through the Red Sea. I got a few things and best of all some mail.”; “Nov. 29. Arrived in Karachi India at 1900. Got 3 hrs. Liberty. Loaded the 30th. People live as poor as all the other places.”; “Mar. 2 1946. Arrived at river. Anchored out. Started up river at 1000. Tied up at 1600. Made Liberty. Saw burning bodies.” Background: USS General H. F. Hodges AP-144 was a General G. O. Squier-class transport ship for the U.S. Navy in World War II. The ship was crewed by the U.S. Coast Guard until decommissioning. She was named in honor of U.S. Army general Harry Foote Hodges. She was transferred to the U.S. Army as USAT General H. F. Hodges in 1946. She was launched 3 January 1945 under Maritime Commission contract MC #711 by Kaiser Co. Inc. Yard 3 Richmond California; sponsored by Mrs. Hodges Dickson; acquired by the Navy and commissioned 6 April 1945 Comdr. C. H. Hilton USCG in command. On 1 March 1950 she was transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service MSTS as USNS General H. F. Hodges T-AP-144. ‎1941 - 1942 EXCEPTIONAL RELIC OF WORLD WAR TWO FLIGHT AND PILOT TRAINING BEING AN ORIGINAL DIARY OF A YOUNG CADET AS HE MAKES HIS WAY WITH TREMENDOUS DETERMINATION TO BECOME AN INSTRUCTOR HIMSELF ONLY NINE MONTHS AFTER HIS OWN INSTRUCTION‎

‎AIR CORPS BASIC FLYING SCHOOL GUNTER FIELD. Very Good. 1941. On offer are two detailed and fascinating diaries of the early years of World War II told from the perspective of flight cadet and later Lieutenant and instructor Hugh Otto Williams. The books aren’t diaries exactly but books in which Williams wrote down the letters he sent to his brother Toby Williams of Kings Mountain North Carolina. The first diary depicts the daily life of Williams as a U.S. Air Corps flying cadet in training at the Mississippi Institute of Aeronautics in Jackson Mississippi. This diary goes from January to August 1941. The second diary follows Williams as a flight instructor at the Air Corps Basic Flying School at Gunter Field later Shaw Field in Montgomery Alabama. It goes from September 1941 to July 1942. In the beginning of the first diary Williams is a brand new cadet having just arrived in Jackson Mississippi. He describes in excellent detail what it was like to learn how to fly the difficulties the instructors written and physical exams the routines and drills that would make him a pilot. Along with the flying comes the rules regulations exercises inspections and all the other realities of learning to be a soldier and pilot. Only 25 days after he first arrives at the base after passing tests and exams and drills he ‘solos’ supervised for the first time. “I soloed - yes all by myself - it did make me feel good. It is an almost indescribable feeling to be up there by yourself. Funny it didn’t scare me one bit. In fact I kinda had a feeling of peace as soon as I got off the ground.” Williams talks about almost every single time he flies up in the hour what it was like what he did what he learned etc. In February he is flying all by himself in the plane and continuing to learn more and more. He comments that a large number of cadets have failed tests and “washed out” meaning they were not good enough to continue. By February there are only 40 or so cadets left out of an initial 92. He graduates in March and moves to Gunter Field in Montgomery Alabama as part of class 41-F. His instructor here is a Lt. McIntyre “A southerner and seemed to be awfully nice” and later a “Lt. Salisbury.” The planes at Gunter Field are different as well: “There ships sure are lots different from what we have been flying. More instruments that you can shake a stick at. Sure will be lots of things to remember to do. They have two-way radio sets - wireless and all that. We take off and land only with permission of the Field Tower. The ships are lots larger than the others. I am really interested in getting started.” The ships he is flying at Gunter are called BT-13s. At Gunter Field Williams is still a cadet and more training is done both flying and learning on the ground. In one instance he takes off on a routine training flight that turns into a difficult and almost harrowing experience as there are problems as gale force winds make flying tremendously difficult for Williams and Williams has to be given detailed instructions on how to land the plane. A small newspaper clipping is pasted in on the next page: “Gunter Drama: Radio Saves 105 Cadets”. In April a newspaper clipping about Williams in pasted in: “Local Boy Soon To Graduate In Air Corps.” He does just that and moves to Maxwell Field in Montgomery. Still part of Class 41-F Squadron H. At Maxwell Field Williams is at the Advanced Flying school. The diary ends in August as Williams finishes his Advanced Flying course with a day-night long distance trip of hundreds of miles. The second diary in begins with Williams now a Lieutenant and instructing at Gunter Field at the Air Corps Basic Flying School where he had started flying only 9 months beforehand. The letters focus on the students that Williams is in charge of 4 in total and the progress that they make or don’t. In January 1942 Williams moves to Shaw Field in Gunter South Carolina and is in charge of six students from six different states. Again he speaks often and candidly of his student’s progress and difficulties. In July he is made Assistant Commanding Officer for a new flying class coming into the Basic Flying School. Finally in July the last entry is written. “Maxwell Field. Central Instructors School. Montgomery Alabama.” Williams is at the school to learn more about Flight instruction. The diary ends with 21 black-and-white photographs of Williams a woman who seems to be his girlfriend or wife and a few of the faces of friends or family. Most of the photographs are labelled with the date they were taken and the location. The diaries also contain bits of ephemera as well. These include: Grade school report cards for Williams in 1932 and 1933 Army cards signifying the completion of various courses in Flight School a membership card to The Officer’s Club and Mess at Maxwell Field Alabama a pamphlet for the “Air Corps Training Detachment Mississippi Institute of Aeronautics Graduation Dinner Dance of the Class of 41-E” and various photographs of Williams from the time period. The two diaries are in good condition. Both covers are free of any major wear. The pages within are almost all still in good condition without much discoloration or rips/tears. The handwriting throughout is easily legible and readable in black ink. All photographs loose or pasted in are still in very good condition. The first diary is approximately 200 pages and the second diary is approximately 150. The books measure about: 4 1/2” x 6 1/4” inches. OVERALL: VG. Text: “January 1 1941. This place is completely out in the country not even a country store! NOthing but the post. Every building is brand new and it is really nice. The first day we were issued flying equipment which is really ‘the stuff’ - they issue to each man about $200.00 worth of equipment namely: A fur-lined jacket fur lined pants and shoes all leather on the outside. Helmet and goggles. Three pairs of coveralls jeans gloves and a mechanic's cap. So much in fact that a person don’t need except underwear and toilet articles. They vaccinated us for smallpox and typhoid in the same arm.We have a nameplate that we have to wear on our coveralls. It starts off one color and you have to polish it until it turns to another color. It took me all morning.”; “January 11 1941. The flying would be swell if it wasn’t for the Instructor. He told me yesterday that it would be a miracle if I ever learned to fly. But just between you and me I think I am pretty good. He has three of us. He takes us up one at a time. After all of us have been up we have a sort of conference going over our mistakes for the day. I don’t catch near as much on the ground as the other two do. I like to fly! I have four hours to my credit now. Am supposed to be able to solo in four more - that is if I ever solo!.We started off learning to do 90° turns. Climbing turns. 180° turns. 360° turns etc. Then we had to learn to follow a rectangle on the ground. That is you pick out a rectangular figure on the ground such as roads fences or something. Use a tree or something for a corner. Sounds easy. Would be if it wasn’t for the wind. You have to figure that on it will blow you off course.All kind of stuff like that.”; July 24 1941. I have completed my last flight in Advanced flying. Now I am supposed to be ready for bigger better and faster ships. It sure is a great relief to know I have actually finished - and I can brag a little with the few that all during my Cadet-training of over 200 hours I have even put a scratch on a plane. Our Squadron took our day-night cross-country yesterday. We flew from Maxwell to Nashville to Chattanooga. A distance of 390 miles where we landed ate supper and waited for it to get dark. Then after dark we flew from Chattanooga to Atlanta to Maxwell. It was a real nice trip. Beautiful weather. The mountains sure did look good from the air.I was Officer of the Day yesterday and today until 11:30 AM got out of a lot of the work due to the Cross-Country.”; “September 23 1941. I started instructing today. Two British and two Americans. It is a funny thing. Both the Americans primaryed at M.I.A. One even had Mr. Firpprecht as an instructor. So far I haven’t ridden with my students because today they had a cross-country trip and since they fly these in loose formation My students went with another flight. I was assigned to squadron 4 which at the present is the under class or class 42-A. They have about 35 hours. Sure am glad they let me start with an experienced class. She relates in over 110 pages shipboard accounts specific reference to individuals by name accounts in Honolulu Hawaii & Maui etc. She also spends a great deal of time enjoying and observing Hawaiian culture and ceremony. She observes the King an amazing Church service with a visiting Cleveland preacher who conducts the service in 'American'. Mrs. Fox paints an amazing picture of early Hawaii and its people. ‎LAMAR INDIANA SPENCER COUNTY. Very Good. 1911. On offer is a super original unique 1911 manuscript diary handwritten Indiana tobacco farmer. Beside the details of his life pertaining to his main occupation we learn that he runs a very interesting sideline being him owning and operating a "Medicine Wagon". He lives in Spencer County Indiana near Lamar and he points out he plants 4000 plants. He also mentions going to Lincoln City Chrisney Kennedy Station Newtonville Tell City and Grandview. In all there are about 130 handwritten pages. Eighty nine of those pages are diary entries and 40 of the pages have customer names and what they purchased from the Medicine Wagon. Here are some snippets: 1911 "Clear and cool. Wind from North West. We all went fishing. Did not catch any fish. Clear tonight. I went to IOOF lodge tonight….Clear and warm. We all went to Church this morning. Vernin and Clyde went to Newtonville. Drove Cricket. Second time she was drove. The rest of the family went to Meek's Church. Clarence Hagan preached….Clear and warm. Boys plowed this morning. I worked in prospect hole. Floyd helped me. Vernin Clyde and Floyd went fishing this afternoon to stay all night. I plowed potatoes in afternoon. Went to lodge IOOF at night….Pretty cloudy and pleasant. Boys planted corn for late harvesting. Plowed tobacco rolled peas and planted corn. I went to M. E. Bullock's after medicine wagon. Eat dinner with William Learner's family. Rained little in afternoon late….Pretty cloudy and warm. Boys planed corn and tobacco in forenoon. Rained in afternoon. I come home from M. E. Bullock's today. Eat dinner with William Learner's family. Get home about 6:30 o'clock. Left medicine wagon at Chrisney to have repaired….Partly cloudy and pleasant. Clyde plowed tobacco in morning and Vernin and I made log pile in field where we want to plow for grass. Lola and I went to funeral in afternoon. Ade Brady's baby. Rained little but not enough to do any good…….Clear and cold but did not do much. I worked some on medicine wagon. Went over to William Schroder's. Have some additional insurance put on list. Went to Chrisney in afternoon. Got flour and have Julia shod. Got me pair shoes and some shirts and underwear…." Near the end of the diary the writing changes and it looks like one of the sons is writing now for their father because he talks about his "pa Canvising all day". Also says "pa sold medicine all day." The back pages deal with medicine sold. Some of the different medicines include; Head Ache Tablets Poultry Powder Cough Syrup Tonic Laxative Liniment Cold Tablets Medicated Ointment Cold Cream Chill Tonic Worm Powder Talcum White Rose Shampoo Jelly Hair Tonic and more. It must have gotten close to a candle flame or fire place as the top right hand corner has been burnt but it does not affect the writing. Binding looks good.
