Appendices. Index. Glossy laminated boards. From the rear cover: "THE UNSUNG SONGWRITERS is dedicated to a period in the history of American music that author Warren Vache calls the 'Golden Age of Songwriting' and to the men and women who made it great. Contrary to the widely held opinion that most of our hit and standard songs were composed by a handful of top writers - Berlin Gershwin Kern Porter and Rodgers - the fact is that the vast majority of them were written by relatively unknown composers. Additionally while the writers who contributed material to the Broadway stage - and to some extent Hollywood musicals - were able to establish distinguished reputations the many freelance writers who were responsible for some of our best songs remained unrecognized by the general public. In this volume you will find Al Neiberg the author of IT'S THE TALK OF THE TOWN Frank Perkins who wrote EMALINE and STARS FELL ON ALABAMA Maceo Pinkard the mind behind SWEET GEORGIA BROWN and SUGAR Ralph Rainger who is responsible for WHEN A WOMAN LOVES A MAN Harry Woods for TRY A LITTLE TENDERNESS J. Fred Coots for YOU GO TO MY HEAD and many more. THE UNSUNG SONGWRITERS brings long overdue recognition to these influential writers and at the same time highlights a neglected but important segment of our American musical heritage.". ‎Baer, Robert (signed); Foreword by Seymour M Hersh‎

‎See No Evil : The True Story of a Ground Soldier in the CIA's War on Terrorism‎

‎New York: Crown Publishers 2002. Bright shiny clean square tight and unmarked. Dust Jacket is NOT price clipped 25.95. No owner's name or bookplate. No remainder mark. Pages are fresh and crisp obviously never read. Illustrated with double-page map and 8 pages of photographs. Glossary. Index. Bound in the original red boards with cream color spine. Sharp corners. A number of words/lines in the book have been redacted by CIA censors apparently because the content is classified. From the Dust Jacket: "In SEE NO EVIL one of the CIA's top field officers of the past quarter century recounts his career running agents in the back alleys of the Middle East. In the process Robert Baer paints a chilling picture of how terrorism works on the inside and provides compelling evidence about how Washington politics sabotaged the CIA's efforts to root out the world's deadliest terrorists. On the morning of September 11 2001 the world witnessed the terrible result of that intelligence failure with the attack on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. In the wake of those attacks Americans were left wondering how such an obviously long-term globally coordinated plot could have escaped detection by the CIA and taken the nation by surprise. Robert Baer was not surprised. A twenty-one-year veteran of the CIA's Directorate of Operations who had left the agency in 1997 Baer observed firsthand how an increasingly bureaucratic CIA lost its way in the post-cold war world and refused to adequately acknowledge and neutralize the growing threat of Islamic fundamentalist terror in the Middle East and elsewhere. A throwback to the days when CIA operatives got results by getting their hands dirty and running covert operations Baer spent his career chasing down leads on suspected terrorists in the world's most volatile hot spots. As he and his agents risked their lives gathering intelligence he watched as the CIA reduced drastically its operations overseas failed to put in place people who knew local languages and customs and rewarded workers who knew how to play the political games of the agency's suburban Washington headquarters but not how to recruit agents on the ground. SEE NO EVIL is not only a candid memoir of the education and disillusionment of an intelligence operative but also an unprecedented look at the roots of modern terrorism.". No remainder mark. This softcover edition is the first to include a new 38-page Introduction by the author. Index. From the publisher: "It is often said that Jane Austen in the countryside remained isolated from the great events of her time. But as Marilyn Butler points out in Jane Austen and the War of Ideas Austen was not isolated from reading novels and novels carried controversy. The sentimental novel of the previous generation the Jacobin novel of William Godwin the philosophical comedy of Robert Bage and Maria Edgeworth -- all conveyed their own kind of ideological meaning. By recognizing Austen's relationship to the literature of ideas Butler offers acute readings of each of the novels and an intellectual context in which to see them as a whole." Highly recommended for all students of the novel." -- Choice. 1st Softcover ed with new Introduction. Trade Paperback. Near Fine condition. xlvi 310pp . Clarendon Press, Oxford University Paperback‎

‎The New Republic Book Selections from the First Hundred Issues‎

‎New York: Republic Publishing Company Inc 1916. Very Good condition spine slightly faded. A much better than average copy of a book tough-to-find in decent condition due to its fragile binding -- original gray-paper covered stiff boards. Complete with the paste-on sailing-ship seal on the front cover and full wrap-around white band -- printed in black and only lightly finger soiled. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are clean and crisp. NO foxing. "A sample of liberal opinion in the United States as expressed from 1914 to 1916." This contains the first book appearance of H. G. Well's THE IDEALS OF ORGANIZATION see Geoffrey Wells #252 as well as two works by Rebecca West - THE DUTY OF HARSH CRITICISM and EROTO-PRIGGERY. Also has contributions by John Dewey 2 George Santayana 2 Walter Lippman 8 Francis Hackett 8 Herbert Croly 8 Philip Littell 10 etc. Frank Kermode wrote about Rebecca West "if ever a writer so young demonstrated what Shakespeare called 'the flash and outbreak of a fiery mind' it was she." While still in her twenties Rebecca West began penning reviews that were perceptive eloquent and more often than not devastating. In essay THE DUTY OF HARSH CRITICISM the twenty-three year old West castigates her fellow critics for their soft-headedness and failure to live up to their responsibilities. The critic she argues has a duty to keep clear 'the path of letters' thereby making it possible for art to save people's souls. Setting an example for her fellow critics to follow she then lays into George Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells for certain heretofore overlooked failings. And let it not be said that West played favorites: When this essay appeared - in volume one number one of The New Republic - H.G. Wells had been her lover for more than a year--and would remain so until 1923." . First Edition Thus. Hardcover stiff boards. Very Good condition/No jacket. 8vo. 361pp . ‎ASTARTE a Fragment of Truth Concerning George Gordon Byron Sixth Earl Byron Recorded By His Grandson Ralph Milbanke Earl of Lovelace‎

‎UK: Christophers 1921. UK New Edition This is a refurbished book where the spine has been rebacked by a professional with the remnants of the original spine now darkened adhered to the rebacked spine the end papers have been replaced the book is tight the cover corners are "soft" the pages clean but with a hint of toning to the edges thus refurbished copy in Good only used condition no dust jacket. Green cloth with gold title xxx 363pp. Frontis portrait of Anne Milbanke and 7 plates; 2 facsimiles of letters. This book by Byron's grandson was written in 1905 and was intended for private circulation only as it touched upon Byron's separation from his wife of 12 months in 1816. It was rumored that the cause was Byron's incestuous relationship with his half-sister Augusta Bryon wife of Colonel George Leigh and mother of several children. This rumor was discredited at the time mostly by the conduct of Lady Byron who kept up a friendship with Mrs. Leigh then and for years afterwords. In 1869 nine years after the death of Lady Byron Mrs. Beecher Stowe announced that Lady Byron had confided to her that the guilt of Byron and Augusta were indeed true. Astarte publishes many letters from the principals involved and throws new light on the affair. This "New Edition" has an introduction by Mary Milbanke's wife and includes additional letters. A heavy book. 2.4 JM HOQ 103/3. Hardcover. Good/Lacking the Dustjacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾". Christophers Hardcover‎
