He was a contemporary of Wyatt Earp, Buffalo Bill Cody, Doc Holliday, John Wesley Hardin and James Butler "Wild Bill" Hickock. Thompson had a colorful career, fighting with the Confederates during the Civil War, and in Mexico under the Emperor, before being imprisoned at the age of 25 for severely injuring his brother-in-law, who had physically abused Thompson's wife. After his release, Thompson made his name as a gunman and a gambler in Texas and Kansas. After he was hired in 1881 as Marshal in Austin, Texas, the crime rate dropped sharply during his term. Sir Thomas Noon Talfourd (1795-1854), became an intimate of Lamb's literary circle beginning in 1815. His able performance as an advocate and judge allowed him to devote himself for over forty years to his avocations - poetry, theater criticism, and literary good-fellowship. He was the executor of Lamb's will. The 'Memoir' which enthusiasts of Lamb owe to Talfourd was issued in two portions. The first, in 1837 under the title 'Letters of Charles Lamb'. The second was this work, published after an interval of eleven years. In England it was titled 'Final Memorials of Charles Lamb'. It consists mainly of letters to Coleridge and Wordsworth, with biographical comment by Talfourd. The two works were first incorporated in 1868, and have been frequently republished. With the backing of Tammany Hall, he became the Governor of New York on January 1, 1913. He soon annoyed Tammany's leader 'Boss' Charles F. Murphy by refusing to accept his guidance on appointments and nominations, ordering investigations of corruption in state agencies, and other similar actions. Tammany politicians brought false charges against him for diverting some campaign contributions to his own use and, with a legislative majority, they made the charges stick. He was impeached and removed from office on October 13, 1913. With Reformers like Thomas leading the fight, he was essentially vindicated, being elected to the New York State Assembly less than a month later. Thomas was deeply involved in Reform Politics, and was the Commonwealth Land candidate for Justice of New York Supreme Court 1st District in 1924. AMERICANA BOX 11‎

Bell, From Her Mother, July 27, 1868. Letitia Elizabeth Landon (1802-1838), English poet and novelist, better known by her initials L. E. L. Born in Chelsea, London she attended Miss Rowden's school - the same school where Mary Russell Mitford and Lady Caroline Lamb were also educated. In 1809, following her father's loss of property as a result of speculation, the family moved to a country house in East Barnet. The family moved back to London in 1815, where they made the acquaintance of William Jerdan, editor of the Literary Gazette. Jerdan encouraged Miss Landon's poetic endeavors, and her first poem was published in the Gazette in 1820 when Landon was 18. Her critical and popular success was almost immediate. She published several volumes of verse and was able to support both herself and her family comfortably on her earnings. By 1826, Landon's high reputation began to suffer as rumors began to appear in the gutter press that she had had affairs or secretly borne children. Landon continued, however, to publish poetry, and in 1831 she published her first novel, 'Romance and Reality.' She became engaged to John Forster, but broke off the engagement in 1835, citing a desire to avoid tainting Forster by an alliance with one who had been subject to a spate of rumors about her purity and sexual status.
