1924 to 1925 Original Handwritten Diary of a New York Flapper in the Roaring Twenties Spending Her Nights At Theaters Restaurants and Clubs around the City
On offer is a fascinating firsthand account of a young woman's social life in the heady days of 1920s New York City. <br /><br />An inscription suggests that the author of this journal is "Miss J Smith" of Hewlett Long Island. The vibrant social life described in Smith's diary exemplifies the spirit of the Roaring Twenties. In entries that date from January 1924 to July 1925 Smith describes spending evenings dining at restaurants seeing plays and movies dancing and going for drives and staying out with her friends until well into the morning hours. <br /><br />"Bill came up Mae B and I went to the Eureka. Saw 'Eternal City.' Saw Marguerite McClane at the Eureka -- with tall blond fellow. She has to be one of the girls club dancers. Spoke a few words to her" January 20 1924. <br /><br />"Bill came about 7: 00. Joe was outside in the car. Went to Maywood for Amelia Schmidt got in show --'Poppy' a little late. Very good. Sat in 3rd row orchestra. Went to Old Heideburg in Union Hills for eats. Had nice time. Got home about 8: 00 AM" Mar 8 1924. <br /><br />"B G Ann and I went for walk to County House Ann clung to Bill so George and I went ahead Seems Ann has 'Bill-itus' so bad she couldn't do anything else. Got 'kinda' disgusted by the talk and actions so got 'kinda huffed'. Wouldn't fool with Bill at all. As they were leaving Ann wanted me to go up after her dress. I told Mae. May said I should go" May 11 1924. <br /><br />".got off in to get new dress. Walked home. Misty and nasty. This taxi on Actuary Row took us home. B came 7: 30. Hen Bill Mae and I went to Had pretty nice time. All French hoppers" April 25 1925. <br /><br />"Wonderful weekend. Very warm. H B M and I saw 'Student Prince'. Great! Home about 1:30. Necked few minutes. Went in" July 11 1925. <br /><br />This ruled notebook has 120 pages and is approximately 72% complete. The front and back cover have separated from the binding. The binding and pages are all in good condition. The handwriting is legible and a few entries are written in standard shorthand script. For a social historian this is an excellent description of life in the heyday of the Roaring Twenties. Smith provides a treasure trove of detail giving names of theatres Broadway shows movies restaurants and other locations and events that were popular at the time. A researcher looking at women's experiences in 1920s New York will find a wealth of information in Smith's entries. hardcover

1934-1936 Diary of a Fiercely Independent 59-Year-Old Divorced Worcester MA Working Woman
Worcester Massachusetts. Very Good with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is the diary of Bertha Marion Reeby Whittle Harford 1875-1955 a bright energetic divorced Massachusetts bookkeeper who is dedicated to her work her adult daughter and her community. While Bertha does not share her name substantial context confirms that this is her diary. Bertha was born in Worcester Massachusetts to parents Richard and Clara Brown Reeby. In January of 1906 Bertha married James H. Whittle 1857-1940 and together they had one child Doris Evelyn Whittle 1906-2009. James was almost 20 years Berthas senior and had five children from his previous marriage some of whom Bertha references in her diary. They divorced in 1917 and Bertha worked and parented Doris alone 1947 when she married Frederick Harford 1874-1955. Bertha spent her career working at Worcester Stampede Metal Company where she began in 1912. She also either owned or managed a rental cottage. Bertha is a voracious writer. Though she writes in a 5-year diary her entries are long and there is only space for her to keep the diary for three years. She works full time is heavily involved in her church and community travels regularly keeps up on politics and is very involved in the life of her single adult daughter Doris a teacher. It was thawing this morning bit its not far from zero tonight. Such quick changes! I bot a taupe shade dress wool today for $4.88. Sent 2 letters to Alvah from P. O. In Franklin Sq. Man came and installed motor in our new elec refrigerator Feb 23 1934. .This is election day for governor of Mass and senator and other offices. It looks like Mass is Democratic from now on Nov 6 1934. .Mr. Cole came for the key to cottage and paid the bal of $30. Alma Fox sent me some green peas from their garden. She wanted me to have them as I took them some cherries July 11 1935. Thursday worked hard at office making out 36 checks and other work. Played bridge at Meda Foxs and won booby prize. Good house but rather poor location I think June 28 1936. .Had some nice Xmas presents. Had dinner at home and then in PM went to Homestead Ave to see Mrs. Pickles. Took Eva Ingelham down to Miss Colbys on Coburn Ave. Then drove over Berwick St. And saw the lights. Went over and saw Ruth Gilchrists presents Dec 25 1936. 1912 Manuscript Diary of University of Nebraska Sorority Girl from a Prominent Entrepreneurial Nehawka Family
Nehawka Nebraska Lincoln Nebraska Knoxville Illinois. Good with no dust jacket. 1912. Softcover. On offer is the excellent 1912 diary of Isadore Sheldon Tucker 1894-1959 of Nehawka Nebraska. Isadore was the only child of Emma Banning and businessman Frank Pollard Sheldon. She was the niece of Republican Nebraska Governor George L. Sheldon who governed from 1907-1909. Isadore was 18 when she kept this diary. See BIO NOTES on Isadore Sheldon Tucker at the end of the listing. This diary follows Isadore through the second half of her senior high school year at St. Marys School near Knoxville Illinois and the first half of her freshman year at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Her diary provides a remarkable look behind the curtain during the most tender and vulnerable late teen years of a socially and academically successful young woman. Some excerpts follow and give a flavour of Isadores diary. She lives on campus at St. Marys and travels home by train when time allows: I started to school today. Marietta King and Alice Farley got on the train at Omaha also. Mildred Adams was on there. We had a circus all the way. Met a lot of other girls in Galesburg Jan 3 1912. A missionary here. Feb 11 1912. The Prom. I went with Mr. Dan Wheeler. Liked him real well. Had a fine programme. The Hall was awfully pretty. Decorated with Smilax and Wisteria. Used lattice work on windows and around piano. Dan Wheeler is a Beta at Knox. Esther went to the reception but not to the prom. Ida Stevens was sick and they stayed together. I had a wonderful time Feb 17 1912. We had our party up in Marg and Marys room. I stayed with Dot most of the night last night. It stormed hard. This A. M. She was all broken out. They think she has the measles. Took her to the infirmary. I have been writing her notes all day Apr 26 1912. Isadore spends the summer at home in Nehawka. On September 23 she starts classes at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Her entries give the reader remarkable insight into the freshman experience particularly when she starts rushing sororities. Its interesting to note that her regular trips home on the weekend wane as her social and academic lives flourish on campus. .I had botany today also Latin. I lost a very valuable Note Book and had to write my Rhetoric theme over. Have it written now and am going to copy it now. I weant to go home if I can tomorrow. Ruth and Mrs. Coe and myself went to the Lyric this evening. Program was real good Oct 4 1912. Today I went to an Alpha Phi breakfast Delta Gamma luncheon Alpha O Cotillion and a Theta dinner
Galaideth wanted me to go to the Ag. Dance but I went to bed. The Alpha Phis had a Japanese Wedding Nov 23 1912. They have decided that there shall be no more calling and today I got written invitations to Tri Delt Kappa and Theta. Could accept all Dec 3 1912. This diary clearly depicts this young woman at the beginning of what would be a successful career in her community. It also paints an unexpected picture of a confident headstrong and bright young woman who does not conform to expected social norms of the time. BIO NOTES ON ISADORE SHELDON TUCKER: Isadore Sheldon Tucker 1894-1959 was the direct descendant of a number of prominent American Revolutionaries such as Nathan Conant 1743-1820 a minute man at the Lexington Alarm and served as lieutenant under Colonel Jonathan Reed. Isadore attended the University of Nebraska Bachelor of Arts class of 1916 and pledged to Kappa Kappa Gamma Nebraska Sigma Chapter. In 1920 Isadore married Marion Tucker. They did not have any children though they did have cousins who lived with them for a time named Wilda and Cecile Mitchell interestingly they are listed as Marions children in his obituary. Isadore was a pillar of the Nehawka community sitting on the board of the library acting as Vice President of the Nehawka Womans Club an executive member of the Nehawka school board Chairman Treasurer and much more. Isadores father Frank Pollard Sheldon was a pioneer merchant and farmer who built Sheldon General Store in 1888. Isadores husband Marion managed the store. Tragically Sheldon General Store burnt to the ground on July 15 1959. Isadore would die only eight days later on July 23 1959. Whether there was a connection between the fire and Isadores death is unknown. Measuring 6.0 inches by 3.5 inches this diary contains 365 pages plus memoranda. The diary is approximately 80% complete containing about 300 entries in the 365 day diary. The cover is an ox-blood leather. It shows wear at the corners but is otherwise in good condition. 1949. On offer is a charming original manuscript diary dated 1949 handwritten by a University of Mississippi coed enjoying Campus life and academics. Beginning in the largish 8 x 5 inch page a day book February 1st and while a little sporadic at times she does a good job detailing her life through to August. Being this was her senior year and she was a popular student with many friends and activities we note her sorority and social life were a whirlwind all while she studied Russian history. Of some small note she was an extra in the filming of the INTRUDER IN THE DUST movie written by William Faulkner. It was a scene filmed in Oxford. While her name is nowhere to be found we are confident local genealogists or researchers will no doubt discover her name.Some soiling but overall G. Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. California. Good. 1897. On offer is a charming and unusual pre turn of the Century manuscript diary handwritten by a young 12 year old boy named is Harlow T Kays. Harlow it appears to live in a tent one that is equipped with a kitchen in we think California. He lived/worked at a Dairy Creamery and went to a creamery dance making for a unique perspective of a late 19th Century boy. He writes about his daily activities whitewashing playing sweeping the tent and stuffing up holes in the kitchen. He enjoyed reading Tanglewood Tales. He also talks about a bunk house and not making it to school because of chores. He says that it rained so much so they did not milk that day. He mentions working in the orchard playing football and one day he did not go to school because there were not enough scholars. There are about 100 written pages the book full save for one and a half blank pages. It measures 8 ¼" x 6 ¼". GREENVILLE ILLINOIS IL. Good. 1921. On offer is an intriguing original 1921 - 1922 manuscript diary handwritten by a young man only identified by the initials L.R.M. who through some extensive detective work has been deduced as Leslie R. Marston notably the future Dr. Bishop Leslie R. Marston. Of note this diary has the unique characteristic of having a gift inscription from his then girlfriend along with notes and entries by his College girlfriend and later wife! Inscribed in one hand: "Christmas 1920; To Leslie from Grace" and then below in another hand: "My girlfriend during the First War" and under that in yet a third hand c1970s: "The doner "Grace" was an "army girlfriend" somewhat younger than L. R. M. with who he corresponded while in military service and continued moderately early months thereafter. Then along came Lila!" Lila is Lila Thompson who married Leslie on August 16th 1921. This 3½ x 6¾ inch 80 percent or so full diary offers a unique look into the development of Leslie Marston the student to the teacher and Leslie Marston the swain to the husband with input from his wife when they were both students at Greenville College in Illinois and later on they move to Iowa City. Here are some snippets: 1921 "January 3rd Entertained in honor of Tommie and Mary Chalmer's. Hostess Lila Thompson guests: Bernice Thompson Crystal Davis Ralph Zolviser Dana King. Hours 8:00-11:30 P.M. My room." "January 8th Secured part of my pay. Pasted picture of Candle on bottom of Miss Thompson's water glass. Wretch! L. R. M. Read again this event in 1979 with the girl I had an eye on. L. R. M." "January 9th Prof. La Due preached one of his wonderful sermons in the morning upon "The Renewal of God." Rev. McCracken preached at night. Post script 1st appearance with L. in public. Note above: The girl who 1st appeared with me in public was the one who was provoked by my trick on 1921 Jan. 8th. Been together as man and wife for 58 years! L. R. M." "January 30th The Crisis. What Crisis This inquiry made in 1977 I think I can guess." "February 5th Working hard on semester grades. .Arrive at Iowa City. Look for rooms. Finally locate 426 E. Market. Unpack." BIO NOTES: Bishop Marston was born on September 24th 1895 to the parents of John R. and Lucy Marston. He married Lila Thompson as stated above. One online source provides: "Dr. and Mrs. Marston had lived in Washington D.C. in the 1920s and worshipped at the newly named B.T. Roberts Memorial Church long before it was located in the new building I described above. This was while he worked with the National Research Council. He returned to Greenville College in 1927 when he was elected president of the school. In November of 1930 Dr. Marston still president of Greenville College was invited by President Herbert Hoover to the White House to attend the Conference on Child Health and Protection. Indeed the Marstons had spent considerable time in Washington." THE NETHERLANDS HOLLAND BELGIUM. Very Good. 1927. On offer is an interesting original circa 1927 manuscript diary of a research trip to the Netherlands and a 1929 trip to Belgium by children's author travel writer and biographer Edith Cavell Amelia Earhart Adele de Leeuw who over her career wrote 75 books. The 4 x 6 inch flip style notepad is filled with 55 or so pages the majority about 35 pages regarding Holland include: notes on the sights culture and history of all the cities and towns she visited. These notes undoubtedly ended up published and as identified by her handwritten inscription the title of the book she is working was "The Flavor of Holland" which was in fact published in 1928. Dunham a politically and socially well placed near 'Zelig' like Connecticut man whose career highlights included Chief office Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue for United States for District of Connecticut two years Elected to Connecticut State Legislature served on Staff Governor Charles A. Templeton 1921 - 1923. Appointed State Insurance Commissioner Connecticut by Governors Templeton and Trumbull in 1923. He also wrote several books concerning the insurance business. While there are no marks of ownership research and associations confirm Mr. Dunham as author. The 49 year old man at the height of his personal society is in touch with many prominent political and business leaders especially on the State government level. Well filled only 17 blank days Howard diary is filled with parties politicians and playing golf and travels lectures and more in the 3" x 5" book. The diary dates from 1929 through 1933 and Elvie was about sixteen years old and living with her parents and four siblings when the diary begins. Elvie had an active social life receiving calls from young men and going out on dates. She was often absent from school and was suspended frequently before eventually graduating. Here are some snippets: "Mama was sick. Played cook today. Absolutely ruined supper. Gas her brother knocked down 2 negro men was locked up in jail. Florence's grandmother's funeral was today. NEW ORLEANS LOUISIANA LA. Good. 1930. On offer is a super original 1930 manuscript diary handwritten by New Orleans native Marcel Theodore Ducros a 52 year old city employee of the New Orleans Sewerage & Water Board and businessman. Born in New Orleans September 30 1878 Marcel would become a formidable citizen in helping usher New Orleans into the Modern Age as he travelled the area extensively and helped build some of the major canals in the state. A Depression era diary we note that Marcel lived the life; an active Shriner football enthusiast weekends primping his Nash playing with the kids and much dining whether with friends or out enjoying New Orleans. He writes January 01 1930 through December 31 1930 he does a super job writing daily noting the weather conditions his wife Ms. Kitty Catherine whether it was the new green dress she bought for $6.00 or the $2.00 she lost at the race track playing cards or listening to Amos and Andy on the radio. He talks about local elections LSU vs Tulane dinner at Arnauds Carnival Season and eating crawfish oysters and crabs. He traveled the streets of downtown New Orleans Bucktown Algiers Westwego and Hammond where he oversaw many canal projects. The largish 8 x 7 inch book has seen better days; the spine cap and back cover is missing the front cover is detaching though the pages are still bound with the exception of the last few pages entitled "Cash Accounts". Some foxing on the first pages and occasional spots and stains. He writes in a lovely hand but some entries were done in light green ink that has faded but is legible with good lighting. ABOARD THE USTS ENTERPRISE. Good. 1901. On offer is a super original manuscript relic of US Naval history being a log book of one young 17 year old cadet's nautical training and experience on the "United States Training Ship 'Enterprise' Cadets Log Book Louis G. Ruggles" as stated in his hand. Casual research finds That Cadet Ruggles was born Jan. 21 1884 died Jun. 24 1972 and served his country as an Ensign US navy during WWI. The 60 page 8 3/8" x 13 5/8" logbook of the Barque-Rigged Screw Sloop's voyage is dated June 1 1901 to October 21 1901. During that time they visited ports in Scotland Copenhagen Denmark Saint Petersburg Kiel Germany Antwerp Belgium Gravesend England Gibraltar Funchal Madeira and back to Boston Massachusetts. BRIGHTON HOVE ENGLAND BRITAIN. Good. 1935. On offer is a super group of 15 original manuscript diaries begun in 1924 by a young Brighton woman who writes as a student on the heels of British suffrage in the 1920s to her as dutiful housewife in the 1950s these diaries offer a superb opportunity to witness the evolution through the self made narrative of a young English woman. From the slingshot of World War I rationing to the exuberant fashionable empowering 'Roaring 20s' to her later life as a respectable conservative '50s housewife. Maisie lives for fashion as even a casual reader notes as she records her school and then work life. The earlier years shows that interest and her travels in fashionable circles evident in the numerous drawings and pencil sketches as she explores couture hairstyles and headdress. We count at least 70 pages with her illustration likely garnered whilst attending fashionable soirées. We learn she is apparently of a well off family Maisie she mentions the 1926 general strike in the United Kingdom which lasted nine days; at the time she was working at some type of a studio but during the strike she was selling flags. Aside from fashion she makes no effort to hide the fact Cupid's arrow has struck her heart with regard to a charming young man Harry Norman Shepherd who she would later marry. Fascinatingly we note Harry was involved in the fashion industry with a 1959 news reference easily found online naming him the master of ceremonies for a fashion show put on by Marks & Spencers designed to attract "an attentive and fashion-conscious audience." Other entries from the mundanities and details of travels Italy France Switzerland throughout England and Dublin we believe married life occasional expenditures books read etc. We also learn as an extension of her fashion proclivities she sews a great deal perhaps having gained the 'bug' and experience in her fashion oriented younger years. The books proper cover the years 1924 - 1927; 1930; 1944 - 1953. There are a small number of ephemeral pieces in the diaries. Various pocket book sizes. 1940s Pair of Diaries Handwritten by a Wealthy Toronto Area Woman
Greater Toronto Area Canada. Good with no dust jacket. 1944. Hardcover. Offering two 1940s handwritten diaries by 61-year-old Eleanor L. Macrae which provide an outstanding look at life in urban Canada during and immediately following World War II. Macrae's entries are lengthy and detailed portraying daily life during and after the war as part of a well-off family for whom service to King and Country was considered a given. Inside the front cover Macrae has noted the names of her family members who were at war: her son Donald serving in the Royal Navy HMS Diadem and his two brothers serving in the Royal Canadian Navy Bill on HMCS Penetang and John Bubs on HMCS Sudbury. Damp & Cold -- threatening rain or snow. Up to shop in the morning and busy taking down Christmas tree -- went to Gwyn Cornells for tea with Lallie Pullen. Delighted to hear from her of Hugh having been awarded the OBE for his services in the Navy. Sis Mont & I went to see Young Mr. Pitt at the Gregory January 5 1944. Very happy letters from Bub & Gilly. Having a wonderful time in Victoria. Bub is to be in Vancouver working on Victory Loans and making speeches in war plants etc. Filling in his time til his ship is ready April 18 1944. Despite having three family members in combat she writes the following: Thanksgiving Day . Mont had planned for an all day sail but as the weather looked bad they called it off . Had our Thanksgiving dinner. . A very happy day & a lot to be thankful for October 9 1944. The 1946-50 diary is actually a hardcover lined notebook in which she made dated entries. It begins on March 1 1946. The entries cover the time period of March 1946 through December 1950. Macrae writes in a chronological order but entries are not made every day. Often there are gaps of several days or weeks. However taken as a whole they provide an excellent overview of Macraes life in the immediate aftermath of WWII. Up early getting ordering etc done. Pat & Sis looking at farms in afternoon. Had an early lunch then Mont & I off to Toronto to Gordon Wrights wedding. Enjoyed it very much. Saw a lot of the younger relatives from Ancaster. Afterwards Mont & I had dinner at the King Edward & came home March 2 1946. Bill & Holly married seven years ago today in Port-of-Spain Trinidad. Went over & looked after the children while H went to have her hair done. Children stayed all night with us as Holly and Bill went to the Yacht Club ball at H. M. C. S. York February 18 1949. Went to Toronto on 12: 20 bus. Shopped & home with Mont. Fun prowling around with my Christmas cheque to spend! Got a new clothes dryer. The tumbler type. $1850! Awful price but I always wanted one January 161950. At the back of the journal are four pages listing a variety of dividend cheques received. Ephemera includes transaction receipts for stock purchases birth and death announcements and photographs among other things. Eleanor L. Macrae was born in 1883 in the Hamilton Ontario area of Canada. Through family and marriage she was related to prominent members of Ontarios early society. The Heritage a large stone mansion whose ruins now belong to the Hamilton Conservation Authority was constructed by a direct ancestor George Leith. The mansion eventually passed to Leiths daughter Alma Leith who married the grandson of a Scottish Earl Stair Dick-Lauder. Alma Dick-Lauder wrote historical articles for the Hamilton Spectator which were later published in book form. There is a photograph of Alma Dick-Lauder in the ephemera accompanying these journals. Macraes husband was Albert Montye Macrae from Oakville Ontario a wealthy community west of Toronto. His family was successful in business and finance and Montye was no exception. Eleanors journal records a number of stock and bond transactions carried out through Macrae & Company a brokerage firm in Toronto. On offer is a very interesting original 1940s through 1953 journal amazingly detailed and handwritten by the very active mining engineer Thomas Murdock while unidentified from within he is identified otherwise from the archive this diary is sourced from who was well respected and from the USA and worked in both Chile and Africa primarily the Congo and other mineral rich regions. This book is a very technical detailing of his daily responsibilities and activities as an engineer. In a precise hand Murdock lays out his conferences publications and other writings reports results from his mostly Africa related activities and interests for various Belgian African and other organizations. A typical title of the daily entry "The Inter African Soils Conference At Goma" Or "Some Notes On The Mufulira Copper Mine Northern Rhodesia" and "The Operations Of The Belgian Congo Diamond Companies" just to name a few. 1935 - 1947 ORIGINAL GROUP INCLUDING LOGS AND SCRAPBOOK OF THE NOTED RACING SCHOONER THE 'MISTRESS'
NEWPORT RHODE ISLAND TO BERGEN NORWAY et al 1935. On offer is a super archive of typed ship's logs and scrapbook regarding the noted schooner "The Mistress" dated 1935 - 1947. George E. Roosevelt President Teddy Roosevelt's nephew was Master and Navigator of the Mistress and while there are no ownership inscriptions or other identifiers it seems likely this scrapbook was compiled and written by Roosevelt. The Mistress was the former flagship of the New York Yacht Club built in Shelbourne Nova Scotia in 1930 for George Roosevelt. Designed by Sherman Hoyt she raced her way through the Depression and War years in Long Island Sound the bi-annual Newport to Bermuda Race and contests in Europe. The archive includes three original 1935 typed logs describing the tragic 1935 transatlantic Yacht Race from Newport - Bergen Norway. Each day of the race is mentioned in 10 pages of typed manuscript. Minor changes have been made inserted in pencil. Plus two original carbon copies of the same. This log mentions several tragic deaths aboard other yachts in this race. A 1931 original typed log of a trip from Newport R.I. on July 4 to July 23 1931 11 pages onboard The Mistress" with George E. Roosevelt Master. Plus one original carbon copy with minor changes inserted in pencil. Another rather interesting typed log or manuscript is a 1947 New York to Panama trip about a Navy vessel. This voyage was from March 31 to April. There is a great 12 x 10 x 6 inch photo of Newsman and officers on board the USS Wisconsin for the Fourth Naval Reserve Training cruise and is captioned. The log of the journey is attached. This includes daily notes and events with navy officers and newspaper reporters as well as the President of the Shell Oil Co. This log was typed on 12 pages on the reverse of each page is letter head from Harris Upham & Co- a famous brokerage firm dealing in securities. Here are some snippets: June 12 1935 Our cook deserves a few remarks. He is a Dane and admits an age of 51 but looks older. His performance during the two days of heavy weather was marvelous. Hot meals well cooked and promptly served greeted us each time we came below cold and wet. All this time cooking in galley without a breath of ventilation as we of course were battened down completely during the gale. He feels hurt if one does not eat a lot and will get anything asked for such as tea instead of coffee etc. Our skipper says this storm would be exceeded only by winter gales or tropical hurricanes. Our cook says that the beating he received was not deserved even by one who murdered his father and mother: and he says he never did that. June 21 1935 Long 27.20 The sun came out this afternoon and its warmth was most grateful. It soon went behind the clouds and our fingers on the wheel again became numb as they have been for day. Below decks we are warm and the food continues wonderful. our eggs are still good: the bread still fresh; rum ration served at times when tired and cold is far superior to whisky and brandy. Contrary to our course in 1931 we took ice with us this trip and the last of it melted away today and we had our last fresh meat today. Of our 320 gallons of water we have consumed only 100 so if conditions continue favorable water will be turned on in the toilet in three days. We so far have used only salt water for washing and bathing. One cup a piece a day for shaving has been allowance of fresh water. BIO NOTES: George Emlen Roosevelt 1887-1963 was a banker and philanthropist was a first cousin once-removed of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt and one of the most prominent railroad financiers of his day involved in 14 railroad reorganizations. He also held directorships in several important companies including the Morgan-controlled Guaranty Trust Company the Chemical Bank and the Bank for Savings in New York. ASEA ABOARD THE SS WEST HARCUVAR. Good. 1927. On offer is an utterly charming from a fascinating perspective original 1927 manuscript trip diary handwritten by E.J. Austin Deck Boy on the SS W. Harcuvar. Edward as we learn from a tucked in news clipping about the 38 year old man uses a 'Composition' notebook beginning Sunday April 17th to May 31st while undated the year matches up to 1927. He begins with the first entry as if a the book is a long letter to his mother and family. Typically his first few days aboard ship as a new crewman is fraught with the highs and lows: the sea air makes for a big appetite and then the rolling of the waves make for a 'green' sailor in both definitions of the situation. By the end of the first few weeks he is an old tar taking his turn at the wheel in between paint chipping sessions at the forecastle. The book also contains a letter perhaps unfinished tucked in dated Summer 1928. At the back of the 8vo book are some religious writings including "The Path of Freedom" Presence of God. ROYALSTON MASSACHUSETTS. Good. 1889. On offer is a super original late 19th Century manuscript journal handwritten by Sarah E. Miller Secretary of the local chapter of the King's Daughters in Royalston Massachusetts. Dated 1889 - 1896 the book details the various activities of the group: minutes from meetings elections Bible readings inspirational messages membership lists monetary offerings etc. There are also sections describing the founding and earliest times of this chapter of the King's Daughters. Established in 1886 as a Protestant non-denominational group consisting primarily of women the King's Daughters distributed aid to the poor while raising awareness of their plight. The group experienced tremendous growth through the early part of the 20th Century inspiring the formation of numerous other women's charity groups. Most of the material deals with the activities in northern Worcester County Massachusetts but there are also reports of the organization's work in other areas like North Carolina and Hawaii as well as countries such as India. The group met in member's homes and the parsonage of the local church. Several membership lists also make book a treasure trove of local genealogy.
