"Lt-General Sir Oliver Leese Bt KCB CBE DSO began his military career in WWI and was awarded the DSO for gallantry in the battle of the Somme. In 1940 as Deputy Chief of Staff he virtually ensured the successful evacuation of the BEF from Dunkirk. In 1942 he commanded 30 Corps in the Middle East leading the breakthyrough at Alamein and the advance to Tripoli. After his success in Sicily and subsequent victory at Cassino he was knighted on the battlefield by George VI. In 1944 he commanded an army group in South East Asia and captured Rangoon.
