Chicago Europe. Fair with no dust jacket. 1866. Softcover. On offer is a fine detailed record of an American businessmans travels and business dealings in Europe in the 19th century. We know that when not traveling he lives outside of Chicago With his wife Belle and children. The journal opens with our diarist already in Paris. His subsequent travels take him first to Spain Portugal Algiers and Italy. He then travels across Europe to Britain and Ireland and then home. His diary begins on January 1 1866 and continued until his return home on May 8th 1866. Along the way he recounts numerous sights describes meeting with agents in various cities and his own insights and opinions on his experiences. His interests range from produce to wines to machinery. He opens his diary with a sweet descriptive entry which sets the tone for the rest of his diary: Commencement of a new year and under circumstances far different from any heretofore in my life. Away from family from Home in a foreign land. Also just commenced a Christian life. Hope to grow in grace. The change must come naturally. The morning of the day passed in looking up courier for the trip to Spain. The nobility of Paris all out in splendid equipages calling at the 2 milleries on the Superior. Beautiful day. Martin Oliver Skrovig
1917 Diary of a Radcliffe Iowa Man Studying Bookkeeping Upon His Return from the Great War
Des Moines Iowa Radcliffe Iowa. Good with no dust jacket. 1917. Softcover. On offer is a fine diary of a young man who had just returned to rural United States from WW1 service. The author of this diary is Martin Oliver Skrovig 1894-984. Skrovig was born in Radcliffe Iowa. To learn more about Skrovig see BIO NOTES at the end of the listing. Martin kept this diary in 1917 in his early 20s. Although he makes no reference to his service context suggests that he had been recently released from service and is now working on his accounting/bookkeeping education. He attended Capital City Community College in Des Moines. Excerpts give a sense of Martins writing: Finished my Trial Bal. And Balance Sheets and closed my books. Boys went skating Jan 16. Doc Earle of College at chapel. Got 100% in Word test Still beat Four C. . Got home 1: 30. Pressed suit A. M. And P. M. Cut wood. Over to Neubaners eve Mar 2324. Tom Alf & I to G. C. Picked 39 rows Dec 13. For a social historian this diary gives a very clear picture of life for a young man in the American midwest in the early years of the 20th century. Even though he was working on his education the demands of daily life to ensure the means to maintain that schooling had to be met. Those demands were accepted as part of the normal course of life and offer a clear contrast to student life a century laterBIO NOTES: Martin Oliver Skrovig was born to parents Ole Ivarsen and Thorbjor Tilda Endresdatter Enderson both of whom immigrated from Norway. He served in the United States army in WW1. Martin married Myrtle Olson 1901-1998 in 1924 and together they had three children. Skrovig worked in banks in Radcliffe and Ellsworth before coming to Marshalltown Iowa in 1932. In Marshalltown Martin was a bookkeeper for the Marshall Canning Company then a clerk for the Railway Mail Service and at his retirement he was a bookkeeper for Vernon Pries Insurance. In his private life Martin was a Deacon and choir member at Elim Lutheran Church and a member of Frank Louis Glick American Legion Post 46. He was a Chaplain and funeral ceremonial unit commander in the Legion Post. He was also commander of WWI Veterans Barracks 1104 and a Scoutmaster. This diary measures 5.25x2.5 inches and contains 52 pages. It is 100% complete. The covers are intact but show definite signs of staining. The binding is good and all of the pages are intact. Emily Mary Kehoe
1933-1937 Diary Following a Pennsylvania Girl from Pre-Teen to High School Senior
Philadelphia PA Pennsylvania. Poor with no dust jacket. Hardcover. On offer is a fascinating 5 year diary of Emily Mary Kehoe 1920-2013 who writes from age 12 through 17. Born in Manhattan Emily is in her final year of middle school and becomes a teenager on August 2 1933. She keeps the diary until age 17 when she is a senior in high school. In Fall of 1933 Emily begins at Tredyffrin Easttown High School in Berwyn Pennsylvania. Following graduation Emily would go on to attend Ursinus College in Collegeville PA. In 1952 she married Raymond Emanuel Fahnestock 1923-1975. Raymond served in WWII in the 43rd and 63rd Bomb Squads. It does not appear that they had any children though data was somewhat lacking in researching this couple. Although born in Manhattan Emily was raised and settled in Pennsylvania. Emily keeps her diary during the depths of the Great Depression though the world is viewed through the eyes of a child blissfully focused on the coming-of-age events that define a young womans life. She begins with optimism and hope listing the resolutions she has made for herself in 1933: I resolve to: Be more helpful to Mother and Dad/Avoid quarrelling with Honey & Ted/Keep my room closet and dresser neat/Take disappointments quietly/ Keep the friends I have and make more/Keep up in all schoolworkfrontspiece. Her diary records the expected events of a young lady's life. She talks about school and friends. Emily keeps her diary religiously in 1933 and 1934. Her entries become very spotty after that with few entries in the final three years. Her last entry in the diary is on Sept 24 1937. Some excerpts give the flavour of Emilys entries: Wed. Cloudy. Cold. School. We won in gym 12-6. Did errands. Put time in on machine. Homework. Bed. In assembly name was called for being on honor roll. Signed book Jan 25 1933. Raining. March 7 1937. She makes little reference to the turbulent outside events that affecting so many other Americans. In this her diary offers an interesting view of life in those difficult times. For a social historian this offers a contrast to the journals that describe events from a wider perspective on just how difficult it was living in these time. It is an especially valuable piece as it shows life from the perspective of a child. The diary measures 5x3.75 inches has 365 pages and is approximately 55% complete. The front cover is missing as is the clasp on the locking strap. The spine and binding are barely intact and worn to the point that the back cover may separate in shipping. The pages are all intact and the handwriting is legible. Overall Poor. ; Manuscripts; 24mo 5" - 6" tall; 365 pages; Signed by Author . hardcover

1913 Sweet Diary of a Young Shopgirl Who Moves from Her Home in Maine to New Hampshire Where She Will Soon Begin Her Married Life
Brunswick Maine Nashua New Hampshire. Good with no dust jacket. 1913. Softcover. On offer is the quaint interesting diary of Agnes Stanwood Harrington 1886-1969 of Brunswick Maine. Agnes was born to Sea Captain William S. Harrington and Fannie A. Skolfield. In 1915 Agnes married William Perley Drowns 1889-1944. He worked as a Brakeman in the rail transport industry. Agnes and William lived in Nashua New Hampshire and had four children though only three survived infancy. At the time she kept this diary Agnes is still living in Brunswick according to her notation in the back of the journal but it seems she moves to New Hampshire in late September and begins seeing W likely William her future husband. Agnes kept this diary fairly consistently throughout 1913 beginning when she was 26-years-old she turned 27 on May 19th. Entries describe her day-to-day activities and shed light on the life of a young unmarried working woman in early 20th century New England. Nelson Keller 1896-1987. Born in Lancaster County Margie married William Grumbine Keller 1894-1962 in 1917. William worked in a shoe factory as a trimmer. Together they had two boys and a girl. Margie lovingly recorded all three of their full names and birthdates in the back of her 1929 diary. Keller spent her entire life in Lancaster county living mostly in Lititz. When she begins her diaries her boys Alfred and Arthur are approximately nine and seven when she begins her diaries. In 1929 she gives birth to her daughter Annette. The following excerpts will give a flavour of these lovely diaries: I started to wash this morning then my wash machine broke. I did not finish til in the afternoon. It was nice so it dried better than I expected. Bill came home early he had something in his eye that hurt too bad Mar 19 1928. I worked all morning. The boys did not go along with Bill today they go to bible school every day. It is just in the morning from 8 to 11 oclock. Mother gave us a chicken yesterday so this evening we killed it. Am having chicken corn pie tomorrow June 15 1928. Think of it a baby girl came to our place. Our baby was born about two oclock Monday morning Apr 22 1929. I was busy all day cleaning and baked this morning. I dont know what I would do without Arthur to help me July 12 1929. I did my weeks cleaning upstairs. In the afternoon I mended and made apple jelly. Its very cold a sudden change thats why we mind it so Sept 19 1929. I made my pineapple jam this morning and done some mending and made 2 baby dresses over for the baby. We called on Grampa Keller and at Fredericks this evening June 11 1930. They had Rally Day at Sun School this after. We all went I could not stay in the whole time on account of Annette. The church was crowded. They had a special choir. We were home the rest of the day Oct 19 1930. I ironed til dinnertime. It rained a little today. I mended this afternoon. This evening I went to the hotel and voted the strait Republican ticket Nov 4 1930. Thanksgiving Day. Grandpa Kellers and Grandpa Nelsons were here for dinner. We had two roasted ducks filling potatoes after vegetables cranberry sauce 2 kinds of pie 2 kinds cake and ice cream Nov 27 1930. These simple diaries paint a fine picture of the day-to-day life life of a young working class mother in small town Pennsylvania. If times are hard she really doesnt mention it. Instead what the reader sees is the slow rhythm of life as she looks after her family. She keeps a detailed record of daily and weekly expenses which give a picture of costs to support her family which only offers more insight into how a working-class family in the 20s made a go of it. Fanny Maria Hoyt Bean
1893 1895 Diaries of the Widow of a Prominent Massachusetts Reverend Whose Children Are Grown and Who is Enjoying Her Golden Years in New York
New York United States. Good with no dust jacket. Softcover. On offer are two diaries dating from the late 19th century in New York City. The author of these diaries is Fanny Maria Bean 1837-1919. She was born in 1837 in New York City to Seymour Hoyt and Fanny Stevens. In 1863 Fanny married Reverend David Marks Bean 1832-1884. Together they had four daughters: Annie Susan Elizabeth and Grace. The family lived in Massachusetts where David was a Minister for 16 years in Everett Webster and South Framingham. In 1867 Reverend Bean represented Everett in the Massachusetts legislature and after concluding his ministerial career in 1879 he was Superintendent of Framingham public schools. He then moved with Fanny and his children to Colorado in an attempt to treat his lung illness but he died in 1884. Fanny eventually moved back to New York where she remained until her death. The diaries cover 1893 and 1895. Fanny Bean is not mentioned by name but a number of context clues clearly identify these diaries as having belonged to her. She was 55 and 57 years old when she began her diaries. Fanny was obviously a well-educated woman and her entries though often brief are well written and paint a picture of a busy life Note: There is evidence of a Fanny M. Hoyt attending Rutgers Female Institute from 1850-1853 but we are unable to confirm this is the same person as she would have been too young to be in university. Some excerpts of her diaries give a sense of the flavour: S & B to N. Y to see the procession of sailors & ships of navies in Hudson R
Apr 28 1893. This is a reference to a parade of 37 warships in an international fleet that visited New York City Along with two squadrons of U. S. Navy cruisers and gunboats squadrons of ships from Great Britain Italy Germany Brazil Holland Russia and Spain also participated. The peaceful collection of ships was a minor diplomatic triumph as many of the nations present were fierce rivals. Susie's wedding day at 12 oclock in church to Lawrence Grey all went off beautifully the floral decorations fine both in house and church about 25 here to celebration Bridal party left at 1: 32 almost 3 I went and laid down feeling exhausted June 27 1893. 56 years old! All my dear children remembered me with loving cards and gifts. I spent much of the time in writing in A. M. And P. M Thus far the Lord hath led me Aug 19 1893. .Distressed to learn one of my S. S Sunday School scholars sentenced to prison for theft Jan 19 1895. Very chilly and windy. Making collar for B. B H & I to dinner at Dr. Ryders Mr. & Mrs. Ridell and mother there too very nice time- many meals here for the time being Mar 28 1895. Lovely and cool. 58! 10 pretty and useful gifts. 2 P. M. Treated myself and all to a ride to Newfield and Springdale about one hour lovely Aug 19 1895. The 1895 diary also contains detailed lists of Fannys expenditures which helps the researcher understand her lived experience. These diaries are a terrific look into the life of a widow in New York whose children have grown and who is making her own way in the late 19th century. Both diaries measure 6.0 x 3.5 inches plus memoranda sections. They are both complete and in Good condition. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . paperback
