Sartre, Jean-Paul
The Diary of Antoine Roquentin Subsequently Issued Under The Title ‘Nausea’

The First UK Printing published by John Lehmann London in 1949. 8vo. dark green publisher's boards lettered with decorative borders in gilt to spine; together in the unclipped pictorial wrapper '9s. 6d.' net to front flap designed by George George; The BOOK is in Very Good or better condition with some spotting to the outer edge and prelims endpapers lightly offset; otherwise a square tight copy with boards remaining clean and bright; The WRAPPER is in Very Good condition with some even toning along the spine and lower panel light spotting to the folds and spine and some very light rubbing along the folds and spine tips. The wrapper George George artwork is striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. A foundational work of existentialist fiction Sartre began writing his debut novel in 1932 during his military service. Inspired by Albrecht Dürer's engraving of the same name he originally titled the work Melencolia before the work was accepted for publication in France in 1937 by Gaston Gallimard who suggested the title 'La Nausée'. This the first English edition appeared many years later and it was subsequently reissued in 1962 by Hamish Hamilton under its original title 'Nausea'. Set in 'Bouville' a town similar to Le Havre the plot follows the life of the title character a writer who has settled in the town in order to compile a biography of the Marquis de Rollebon. Instead he reports through a series of diary entries his thoughts on the world around him the people who inhabit it and his struggles with his own perplexing existence culminating in an overwhelming feeling of nausea which 'spread at the bottom of the viscous puddle at the bottom of our time the time of purple suspenders and broken chair seats; it is made of wide soft instants spreading at the edge like an oil stain.' Perhaps Sartre's most famous work the UK first edition is surprisingly scarce in the wrapper. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact.
John Lehmann, London hardcover
