Once apparently mounted into an album with remnants of paper glued to the rear cover obscuring any text or illustration. 8 pages with illustrations and decorations by Ludvig Sandoe Ipsen on each page. Very good. <p>RARE.<p>The Danish-American artist & illustrator Ludvig Sandoe Ipsen 1840-1920 served in the Danish Army engineer corps after training as an architect. Ipsen immigrated to Boston in 1867 where he designed and illustrated book covers book plates and posters as well as book illustrations. He illustrated works by Longfellow Sir Walter Scott Hawthorne and Twain. Ipsen is perhaps best known for his illustrations of the 1886 edition of Elizabeth Barrett Browning's "Sonnets from the Portuguese". A truly spectacular copy.<br /> <br /> First English edition of this collection of Danish tales and verse selected and translated by Anne Bushby d.1875 who had known Anderson since 1847. Busby believed that Anderson's work surpassed the category of children's literature. In this translation she offered a new take on the source material by adapting the language for a Victorian British audience Viggo Hjørnager Pedersen. Many of the stories were first published in New Monthly Magazine but were compiled for this volume as a celebration of Danish literature. Hans Christian Andersen often referred to in Scandinavia as H. C. Andersen 2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875 was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays travelogues novels and poems Andersen is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's popularity is not limited to children: his stories express themes that transcend age and nationality. Andersen's fairy tales of which no less than 3381 works have been translated into more than 125 languages have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness readily accessible to children but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. Some of his most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes" "The Little Mermaid" "The Nightingale" "The Snow Queen" "The Ugly Duckling" "Thumbelina" and many others. Wikipedia Signe Toksvig 1891–1983 was a Danish writer. Her articles were published in the New York Times the Nation The Atlantic and other periodicals. She also published several books including biographies of Hans Christian Andersen and Emanuel Swedenborg. Her life and work and obstacles she encountered has also been the focus of scholarship by others. All her writings were in English. At age 14 Toksvig emigrated with her family from Denmark to the United States. She graduated from Cornell in 1916 and then worked as an assistant editor at The New Republic. In 1918 she married the journal's founder Francis Hackett an Irish writer and literary critic. They moved to Ireland in 1926 and lived there until 1937 when they moved to Denmark.
