Hans Andersen
Fairy Tales.

Brown grained cloth with gilt lettering on the spine. Embossed ship on front cover.

A fairy tale fairytale wonder tale magic tale fairy story or Märchen is an instance of European folklore genre that takes the form of a short story. Such stories typically feature mythical entities such as dwarfs dragons elves fairies giants gnomes goblins griffins mermaids talking animals trolls unicorns or witches and usually magic or enchantments. In most cultures there is no clear line separating myth from folk or fairy tale; all these together form the literature of preliterate societies. Fairy tales may be distinguished from other folk narratives such as legends which generally involve belief in the veracity of the events described and explicit moral tales including beast fables. In less technical contexts the term is also used to describe something blessed with unusual happiness as in "fairy-tale ending" a happy ending or "fairy-tale romance". Colloquially the term "fairy tale" or "fairy story" can also mean any far-fetched story or tall tale; it is used especially of any story that not only is not true but could not possibly be true. Legends are perceived as real within their culture; fairy tales may merge into legends where the narrative is perceived both by teller and hearers as being grounded in historical truth. However unlike legends and epics fairy tales usually do not contain more than superficial references to religion and to actual places people and events; they take place "once upon a time" rather than in actual times. Fairy tales occur both in oral and in literary form; the name "fairy tale" "conte de fées" in French was first ascribed to them by Madame d'Aulnoy in the late 17th century. Many of today's fairy tales have evolved from centuries-old stories that have appeared with variations in multiple cultures around the world. The history of the fairy tale is particularly difficult to trace because only the literary forms can survive. Still according to researchers at universities in Durham and Lisbon such stories may date back thousands of years some to the Bronze Age. Fairy tales and works derived from fairy tales are still written today. Folklorists have classified fairy tales in various ways. The Aarne-Thompson classification system and the morphological analysis of Vladimir Propp are among the most notable. Other folklorists have interpreted the tales' significance but no school has been definitively established for the meaning of the tales. Hans Christian Andersen; 2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875 was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays travelogues novels and poems he is best remembered for his fairy tales. Andersen's fairy tales consisting of 156 stories across nine volumes and translated into more than 125 languages have become culturally embedded in the West's collective consciousness readily accessible to children but presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers as well. His most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes" "The Little Mermaid" "The Nightingale" "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" "The Red Shoes" "The Princess and the Pea" "The Snow Queen" "The Ugly Duckling" "The Little Match Girl" and "Thumbelina." His stories have inspired ballets plays and animated and live-action films. One of Copenhagen's widest and busiest boulevards skirting Copenhagen City Hall Square at the corner of which Andersen's larger-than-life bronze statue sits is named "H. C. Andersens Boulevard."
Odhams Press hardcover

Fairy Tales

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited 1924 A good to very good copy of the 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' - in dark blue decorative cloth binding signed by Kay Nielsen. With 12 tipped-in colour plates 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration begun in 1912 but not published until 1924 because of the disruption caused by World War I. It is a beautiful and expensive production but the changing market for colour plate books meant that it had to have fewer colour plates than Nielsen's earlier works. This book is number 378 of 500 printed. The blue cloth binding has bright gilt decoration and titles to the front board and spine. The front board is bright and clean with light corner and edge wear. The spine is dulled with a lot of pulling to the top and bottom and the back board is clean but with some scuff marks and light corner and edge wear. There is a small ink spot to the bottom page edges not visible from inside the book. The contents are complete and in very good to near fine clean condition. The book is slightly shaken and there is occasional light brown spotting in the gutter and the occasional light mark elsewhere - principally to preliminaries and end leaves.
Hodder and Stoughton Limited hardcover

Fairy Tales

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited 1924 A very good copy of the 1st edition - the 'edition du luxe' - in full gilt-decorated vellum binding signed by Kay Nielsen. With 12 tipped-in colour plates 16 full page black and white plates and numerous designs by Nielsen. This was Nielsen's third book illustration. He began the work in 1912 but the disruption caused by World War I meant that it was not published until 1924 - and although a beautiful production it could not afford the number of plates that embellished East of the Sun West of the Moon his previous work. The market for expensive illustrated gift books declined significantly after the War and Nielsen only illustrated two more works before moving to Copenhagen and working on set designs for the theatre. This book is number 119 of 500 printed. The vellum binding has bright illustration. It has some grubbiness and darkening to the spine; a slight bump to the bottom front corner; and slight marking to the back board particularly the bottom corner. The spine is cocked to the front. Top page edges are gilt; side edge is untrimmed. The contents are in very bright and clean condition; occasional very light spotting to tissue guards. There is a slight crease to the tissue guard to the frontispiece and a small light brown area to the bottom margin of p 153 lightly mirrored on 152. There is a small scuff and slight loss to the bottom of the rear free endpaper. A very nice copy.
Hodder and Stoughton Limited hardcover
