<p>London and Orpington: George Allen 1893. Two volumes bound in olive green cloth with pictorial cover illustrations in forest green. Octavo 398 & 426 pages respectively. Each volume contains 100 illustrations in black and white by Arthur J. Gaskin including a full page frontispiece. Arthur Gaskin less well-known than his colleague Walter Crane produced some of the most enchanting illustrations of the period. The cover illustrations two young girls reading beneath a pair of stylized pomegranate trees form a border around the title panel decidely Pre-Raphaelite in nature and tone. Aside from some light soil and a bit of a bump to one corner both volumes are in exceptionally nice condition.</p> hardcover

First few leaves brownspotted. <br/><br/><em>Early edition of the famous Andersen-translation "Stories for the Household".In 1864 Dulcken published his first translation of some of Andersen's fairy tales "Stories and Tales". In 1865 or 1866 he publishes his second "What the Moon Saw: And Other Tales" profusely illustrated; together these to translations make up the 9th Andersen fairy tale translations to appear in English. In 1866 a collected edition of all the fairy tales from Dulcken's two collections plus two other ones appeared in one volume under the title "Hans Christian Andersen's Stories for the Household" with 220 illustrations. Dulcken's translations became exceedingly popular and were reprinted numerous times. Dulcken is considered one of the three best contemporary Andersen fairy tale-translators. </em> hardcover

Despite this the jacket remains whole. The boards are a little edge worn but strong and sturdy. Internally there is mild sporadic foxing throughout but there are no other markings or inscriptions and the pages within are neat and complete. Securely bound and preserved in cellophane. JK.
