‎<p>Large quarto 27.5x22.5 cm. wrappers 10 pp. The Omanut or Omonuth publishing house Moscow-Odessa-Frankfurt-Tel Aviv and its Gamiliel Library of children's literature was founded by the scion Shoshana Persitz 1894-1969 funded by her father Hillel Zlatopolskii and her husband Iosif Persitz. Shoshana was 24 when she began the press. Omanut is the Hebrew word for "art." Shoshana was deeply involved already in the Tarbut group which in 1917 vowed to restore Hebrew language and she wanted Hebrew to be the mother tongue of Russian Jews who were historically prosecuted and Hebrew was confined to religious texts. Persitz was inspired by the esthetics of the Mir iskusstva group of artists and to print children's books with fine works of renowned Western authors --- Lewis Carroll Jules Verne Charles Dickens and printed as beautifully as possible. Jewish children would thus be able to partake of best children's literature in their own language. This would be a <em>hidur Mitzvah</em> --- a sanctification of the world through beauty inculcated into young Jewish readers. Originating in Moscow in 1918 Persitz was unable to print the first titles there because the Bolsheviks nationalized her equipment. She with her family together with the entire Tarbut group relocated in a special train provided by a German diplomat to Odessa where the press found temporary quarters. In Odessa the artist group Havarut Tzavarim was formed and connected with Omanut. It consisted of four Jewish artists who provided graphics for most of the books issued under the Gamiliel Library imprint. They decided not to attribute work to any one member acting as a single <em>bunt</em>. After Odessa fell to the Soviets and the revolutionary government posed the same threat to the press there Persitz exiled to Germany at Homburg vor der Höhe near Frankfurt where Omanut continued to publish and release the largest number of titles of the Gamiliel Library which were twelve in all. In 1925 the press moved from Europe to Tel-Aviv and Shoshana became a member of the Knesset. The Omanut publishing house continued to 1945 with a strong emphasis on educational texts. But the Gamliel Library was discontinued after leaving Europe and received scant attention thereafter. A beautiful chapter of Hebrew children's literature deserves to be more widely known and honor paid to this wonderful series released in small quantities and currently held by institutions. The present work The Nightengale has rtwork by Heorhyi Narbut 1886-1920 Ukrainian master graphic artist for this famous tale of Hans Christian Andersen. One of the early releases of this series from Odessa by the Omanut Press which originated with Knebel's Russian language printing. One institutional holding found worldwide LOC. Condition is GOOD ; covers are worn and rubbed with some minor spots spine is sunned to a tan corners worn spine ends mildly worn. Front hinge has a little give but the binding overall is fine. Text is unmarked some margins have spots some early pgs are dog-eared including the margin of one plate two plates have small closed tears that are in the margin and extend hardly at all into the plate. The plates are clean and colors good. Ffep has a small pencil scribble half title pg has a pencil number upper margin of contents pg has an ink number rear pastedown has loss from the removal of a label or date pocket but it's hard to tell if it was a library book or not. ‎<p>Red cloth binding with gilt title and decoration.</p><p>In a 'Boots the Chemist' dust sheet.</p><p>A good copy in the original red cloth binding with 16 tipped-in colour plates and 35 full page black and white illustrations by W Heath Robinson. This issue with Heath Robinson's work - the black and white illustrations are particularly memorable. The binding is in fair condition with pulling to the top and bottom of the spine and bumping and wear to corners. The spine is faded. The dust cover is in superb order. Internally the contents are in very good clean condition.The book is sound.</p><p><strong>Hans Christian Andersen </strong>2 April 1805 – 4 August 1875 was a Danish author. Although a prolific writer of plays travelogs novels and poems he is best remembered for his literary fairy tales.</p><p>Andersen's fairy tales consisting of 156 stories across nine volumes have been translated into more than 125 languages. They have become embedded in Western collective consciousness accessible to children as well as presenting lessons of virtue and resilience in the face of adversity for mature readers. His most famous fairy tales include "The Emperor's New Clothes" "The Little Mermaid" "The Nightingale" "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" "The Red Shoes" "The Princess and the Pea" "The Snow Queen" "The Ugly Duckling" "The Little Match Girl" and "Thumbelina". His stories have inspired ballets plays and animated and live-action films.</p><p>'In June 1847 Andersen visited England for the first time enjoying triumphant social success. The Countess of Blessington invited him to her parties where many intellectuals would meet and at one such party he met Charles Dickens for the first time. They shook hands and walked to the veranda which Andersen noted in his diary: "We were on the veranda and I was so happy to see and speak to England's now-living writer whom I do love the most."</p><p>The two authors respected each other's work and as writers and had in common their depictions of the underclass who often had difficult lives affected both by the Industrial Revolution and by abject poverty.</p><p>Ten years later Andersen visited England again primarily to meet Dickens. He extended the planned brief visit to Dickens' home at Gads Hill Place into a five-week stay much to the distress of Dickens' family. After Andersen was told to leave Dickens gradually stopped all correspondence between them to Andersen's great disappointment and confusion; he had enjoyed the visit and never understood why his letters went unanswered.
