The work is happily free of the bibliographical points states or issues that afflict so many other English works of the period. The best and fullest descriptions are that of the late Prof. Jackson in the Pforzheimer Catalogue. Pforzheimer 970. This exact set last sold at auction at Sotheby's in 1951 lot 797 for �34 pounds. One of the absolute cornerstones of English literature. Books I-III had been published in 1590 and are here reprinted uniformly with the FIRST EDITION of Books IV-VI; and although Spenser had projected his allegorical poem in "Twelve Books" as announced on the title these six books of "The Faerie Queene" are all that were ever published. The present form then---the second edition of Vol. I and the first edition of Vol. II---together constitute the first edition of the complete work. It is unnecessary to comment at length on the unique position this poem occupies in the English language. The nine-line stanza in which it is written was invented by Spenser and has been called the "Spenserian stanza" ever since. With the possible exception of Milton Spenser was the most scholarly and widely read of English poets. His wide reading in the classics and contemporary French and Italian writers reflects itself in his own poetry which in turn influenced the long line of English poets who succeeded him. One of the very earliest references to Virginia occurs in stanza 2 of the Second Book: "Who ever heard of th'Indian Peru Or who in venturous vessell measured The Amazons huge river now found trew Or fruitfullest Virginia who did ever view" This of course reflects Spenser's conversations and friendship with Sir Walter Raleigh who were sharing "exile" in Ireland in 1589. Raleigh had just returned from his abortive efforts to colonize the new territory which he named Virginia; and it was during these neighborly meetings between the two men that Spenser showed the first three books of "The Faerie Queene" to Raleigh and the latter's enthusiasm induced Spenser to return to London the following year to find a publisher. Once accepted as being the earliest reference to Shakespeare. The following lines published in Shakespeare's 28th year form a part of a lamentation over perversions of public taste: "All these and all that els the Comick Stage Are now despized and made a laughing game. And he the man whom nature self had made To mock herself and truth to imitate With kindly counter under mimick shade Our pleasant Willy ah is dead of late With whom all joy and jolly merriment Is also dreaded and in dolour drent." "The Teares of the Muses" p.8 The reference was once accepted to be the earliest notice by name of the immortal bard. It is now believed that "Willy" is Spenser's friend Sidney. According to Charles Wisner Barrell "New Milestone in Shakespeare Research" - "Nicholas Rowe states that John Dryden held that Spenser had Shakespeare in mind in describing "Pleasant Willy. - So while Dryden as well as Edmund Malone was unquestionably correct in believing that Spenser's "'pleasant Willy" pictures the true Bard the circumstance should be noted that this identification automatically debars the alleged genius of Stratford as the person intended on the score of age alone. Spenser carefully describes "Willy" as a highly cultured aristocrat scorning the boldness of such baseborn men" The Folger Library states that "the first definite mention of Shakespeare is in 1592 as an established London actor and playwright mocked by a contemporary as a "Shake-scene." Six volumes quarto original light cream pictorial cloth stamped in gilt and red top edges gilt others untrimmed original red on pink illustrated card covers bound in. Fore and bottom page edges tanned; light yellowing to free endpapers from binding; very light spine yellowing; soft bruise to upper inner corner of front covers; volume I has neat professional repairs to inner hinges rear joint and spine ends with light darkening at ends gilt imprint a little flaked; volume VI has one very small brown spot on the spine; volume II has a hairline crack to front inner hinge neatly repaired; a fine set otherwise no owner names or plates the vulnerable white cloth remarkably clean. Edition of 1000 copies on handmade paper printed by Charles Whittingham of the Chiswick Press. 88 full- page woodcut illustrations one double-page 132 head and tailpieces numerous woodcut initials uniform illustration to front covers. Edited by the eminent book colllector bibliographer and forger Thomas J. Wise. A very handsome production of this great classic of late 16th century English literature an epic poem one of the longest in the language and still never completed. Considered by many to be Walter Crane's best work in black & white it was his most extensive commission as a book illustrator taking three years to complete.
