Seine Herkunft blieb geheimnisvoll. Schnell erwarb sich Lucien Waléry einen respektablen Ruf, vorzugsweise als Porträtist schillernder Geschöpfe der Bühnen- und Halbwelt-Prominenz. Seine diesbezüglich zahlreichen Bilder pflegte er gerne schwungvoll mit "Waléry - Paris" zu signieren. Zuweilen bediente er sich aber auch der Anagramme "Yrélaw" oder "Laryew". Berühmt sind seine vor 100 Jahren gewagten Aufnahmen von Revue-Tänzerinnen - namentlich von Josephine Baker und Mata Hari. Waléry wird oft mit Stanislaw Julian Ignacy Graf Ostroróg, 1863-1935 verwechselt, stilkritisch gesehen, könnten Waléry und der Graf Ostoróg sehr wohl ein und dieselbe Person gewesen sein... Jedoch: Um 1930 verschwindet Lucien Waléry wieder aus Frankreich ? so diskret, wie er gekommen war...
