A very good copy of a somewhat ephemeral item. Internally clean. A later printing of the 1949 edition which was clearly an object of some popularity. Dealing primarily with the causes psychology and techniques of masturbation amongs a number of subject fields with particular attention paid to the "reasons" for masturbation among such groups as "Unsatisified Women" "Wives who Masturbate" and "Auto Erotism in Widows." Most of the psychological examnation probably appears pretty self evident to us today but the number of professional people seriously examining sexuality in the 1950's was comparatively low. Two octavo volumes; quarter-cloth of blue paper-covered boards; xl1-343; xxiv1-502pp. Boards slightly soiled with a rather conspicuous ring-stain to front cover of v.II; else just lightly worn and internally fine. <br /> <br /> For "anthropology" read "prurient literature." For "untrodden" read "suspect." For "esoteric" read "naughty." For "customs" read "sex acts." For "French Army-Surgeon" read "Probably Charles Carrington." A classic Victorian erotic text masquerading in the form of a French anthropological treatise first brought out by Carrington in 1897 and here reprinted clandestinely lacking any genuine imprint so as to foil the censors. Lacking an imprint but almost certainly a production of one of the notorious New York bookleggers of the Thirties the most likely suspects being Esar Levine's Panurge Press or the closely associated Falstaff Press operated by Ben Rebhuhn. Some spotting and foxing some repaired tears.<br /> Erotic art - in letters and pictures - is an eminent part of the cultural heritage of ancient China where lovemaking was considered as a natural practice a sacred duty for both men and women. <br /><br />Albums with explicit drawings were often made for newly married couples as an instruction handbook. Here however the two scenes are rather unconventional illustrating polygamy practices that dominated aristocratic circles in the ancient Chinese society. The first watercolour shows not without a hint of humour two women engaged in a lovemaking game with a man. The second watercolour suggests the importance of self-pleasure for lonely females forced to live in a harem setting.<br /><br />Pieces like these provide a better understanding of Chinese culture that was largely suppressed in the wake of the Cultural Revolution in the mid-XX century. <br /><br /> [early 20th century]. unknown‎

Dans sa préface, le traducteur (Gustave Brunet) attribue cet ouvrage à Freidrich Christian Fischer, un conseiller prussien, qui l'aurait fait paraître en 1780 et dédié au baron de Zeidlitz alors ministre de la Justice et directeur général de l'Instruction publique. The work was first published in London in 1912, without illustrations, by the French poet and connoisseur of erotica Fernand Fleuret: 'a highly successful literary owl's mirror'. The alleged poet never existed and the 31 obscene epigrams and blasphemous poems were written by F. himself, who perfectly captured the tone of the 17th century' (Bilder-Lex. II,386).
