Dealing primarily with the causes psychology and techniques of masturbation amongs a number of subject fields with particular attention paid to the "reasons" for masturbation among such groups as "Unsatisified Women" "Wives who Masturbate" and "Auto Erotism in Widows." Most of the psychological examnation probably appears pretty self evident to us today but the number of professional people seriously examining sexuality in the 1950's was comparatively low. Publisher's yellow paper wraps titled in black to spine and front cover. 243pp. Clean and bright with a dent to the head of the spine and a little soiling to the rear panel; internally clean with tape residue on flyleaves from a glassine jacket which is present but torn at the head of the rear panel edges untrimmed. A very good pleasing copy. This copy being #506 of a limitation of 1000 copies on Vergé paper in French printed between April and June of 1954. <br /> <br /> Desclos's incandescent erotic milestone essentially an extended letter of lust to Jean Paulhan who contributed the preface. Desclos's identity was secret until the 1990's when she eventually revealed herself. Paulhan was a devotee of the works of De Sade and allegedly teased Desclos with the statement that no woman could write like De Sade. Desclos accepted the challenge and "Histoire D'O" manages to meet all the expectations of someone seeking a more modern incarnation of Sadeian fiction whilst still containing many elements that have become genre tropes; secret societies arcane rituals deserted manor houses and a number of other qualities that suggest that this kind of lush heady erotic fiction is essentially gothic romance with the gloves off and the gratuitously tightened corsetry on. The location of the remote manor house of iniquity and depravity or freedom if you prefer is given as Samois sur Seine and the name "Samois" was adopted by the first American lesbian BDSM collective in the late 1970's. Laid into this copy is a newspaper photograph of Paulhan resplendent in his uniform as a Sergeant in the Zouaves. The first English language edition was published by Olympia in 1965 and any early printing in either language can be considered collectable. Chez Jean-Jacques Pauvert unknown

Some spotting and foxing some repaired tears.<br /> Erotic art - in letters and pictures - is an eminent part of the cultural heritage of ancient China where lovemaking was considered as a natural practice a sacred duty for both men and women. <br /><br />Albums with explicit drawings were often made for newly married couples as an instruction handbook. Here however the two scenes are rather unconventional illustrating polygamy practices that dominated aristocratic circles in the ancient Chinese society. The first watercolour shows not without a hint of humour two women engaged in a lovemaking game with a man. The second watercolour suggests the importance of self-pleasure for lonely females forced to live in a harem setting.<br /><br />Pieces like these provide a better understanding of Chinese culture that was largely suppressed in the wake of the Cultural Revolution in the mid-XX century. <br /><br /> [early 20th century]. unknown

With an illustration on title-page built up out of cast ornaments and 4 engraved plates. 2 184 pp. Second copy located of the first and only edition of "Confessions of a libertine" an 18th-century Dutch picaresque erotic novel in which the principal narrator Karel tells his fiancée Charlotte about his promiscuous past. The story starts with how his father met his mother Julia in the monastery where he grew up in. Julia was the 17/18-year-old daughter of the abbot who was "taught" all about sexuality by her father at an early age. The abbot passed away soon after Karel's father left for the army and was replaced by a 45-year old Franciscan monk who took turns with both mother and daughter. The situation became unsustainable because of the mother's jealousy of her daughter causing Julia to flee to her lover; Karel was conceived the following night. The life of Karel's parents gives a glimpse of the story that follows often taking place in a religious environment. The novel does not only detail the sexual encounters however but also provides arguments for free morals for instance pointing out that our ancestors just followed their nature without being obstructed by any morals. Novels like this have been neglected for about two hundred years and only in the last decennia interest has been revived.With bookplate and owner's inscription. Framed. <br /> A series of six nude studies showing the same model posing in the photographer's studio. The style of the photographs which artistically combines high and low art allows to attribute the authorship to the Grundworth studio which is known to have been producing erotic postcards in Paris from the 1890s to the 1930s. <br /><br />Like most of the studios engaged in production of erotic photographs and postcards of the time little is known about it as despite the widespread circulation of these cards their production and distribution was illegal in France hence anonymity was essential. Given the time span and a number of different styles the name is unlikely to represent an individual photographer but more likely a group of photographers who were perhaps better known but wanted to hide their real identities.<br /> [Paris, c.1930s]. unknown

Fully engraved: hand-coloured title numbered 1 pp. 10 preface in red with black borders plates numbered 2-30 hand-coloured each with a leaf or two of text in red within red border; hand-coloured title and 35 hand-coloured plates with text leaves as before - in all 66 hand-coloured plates including two titles. Contemporary marbled calf spines with raised bands gilt in compartments brown morocco labels lettered in gilt marbled endpapers red edges; a bit rubbed hinges a bit weak.<br /> Fine hand-coloured copy of this fully engraved work printed on papier verge de Hollande extra-fort - one of these 'rarissimes exemplaires dont les figures chefs-d'oeuvre de gravure ont ete peintes dans un coloris d'une beaute surprenante' Pia.<br /><br />Hancarville catalogued Sir William Hamilton's collection of ancient vases in Naples in 1764 from which it is likely he took some inspiration for these images showing a collection of classical erotica supposedly taken from actual medallions. In 1777 he travelled to London where he arranged the second edition of this work with the text also in English.<br /><br />Our copy matches Pia's description; the number of plates may vary.<br /> Cohen 476; Pia Enfer 1487-1488. Paris La Tradition 1948 In-4, maroquin bleu orn d'un cuivre original encr mont au centre du premier plat, dos sans nerfs portant le nom de l'artiste et le titre de l'ouvrage en grandes capitales pousses or entre des jeux de filets dors horizontaux et verticaux; larges encadrements intrieurs orns d'un filet or, doublures et gardes de soie moire crme, tte dore, non rogn, couverture imprime. Etui (R. Degoul).44 pointes sches originales in texte de Maurice Leroy illustrent ce texte anonyme plein d'humour qui rapporte les croyances, dictons et superstitions populaires exposs et comments par des femmes (sans doute de petite vertu) du Nord et de la Picardie, lors de runions nocturnes autour de leurs quenouilles. Tirage limit 330 exemplaires numrots sur vlin d'Arches. Un des 44 premiers exemplaires, seuls comporter un dessin original excut la mine de plomb et sign par l'artiste (correspondant ici l'encadrement de la page de titre), une suite avec remarques des illustrations et un cuivre encr (ayant servi l'impression de l'in-texte page 116 et mont au centre du premier plat de la reliure).
