Enter Flory a timber merchant with a birthmark and a conscience which is considered poor form in hot weather. He has a loyal dog a complicated love life and a friend—Dr. Veraswami—whose optimism about British justice is the most fragile object in Upper Burma.</p><p data-end=1340 data-start=786>Orbiting them all: <strong data-end=818 data-start=805>U Po Kyin</strong> a magistrate of serene girth and agile ethics who treats reputation like lacquerware—if it cracks he simply paints another. There’s also <strong data-end=973 data-start=959>Ma Hla May</strong> equally wronged and wrathful; <strong data-end=1018 data-start=1005>Elizabeth</strong> with catalogues of English comforts rattling in her mind; and a chorus of club men who swear they aren’t racist they just like their prejudice filtered and iced. The jungle hums the gossip hisses the tennis is serviceable and the air is so thick with moral humidity you could bottle it and sell it as “Empire No. 5.”</p><p data-end=1852 data-start=1342>Orwell’s satire is razor-clean: no grand speeches just the slow grind of petty vanity bureaucratic make-believe and the useful myth that everyone is better than someone else. It’s funny until it isn’t romantic until it isn’t noble until the bill arrives. Watch for the tiny moments that do the damage: a letter drafted with surgical malice a club vote wrapped in procedure a look away at the exact second looking would have mattered. If the Empire had a user manual this book would be the margin notes.</p><p data-end=2233 data-start=1854>“Condition: Good” at <strong data-end=1895 data-start=1875>Crappy Old Books</strong> means an honest veteran of shelf and suitcase: a mild spine-crease from tropical intrigue pages with the right amount of give for turning during uncomfortable truths perhaps the faintest tan as if the paper itself spent a season in Kyauktada. Solid enough for rereads; forgiving enough for pencil notes that say “oh dear Flory.”</p><p data-end=2512 data-start=2235>Buy it for the jungle heat and dry wit; keep it for the precision with which Orwell disassembles the club the country and the comfortable story colonisers tell themselves.
