‎London: Blackie & Son Limited 1888. Five volume set weighing about 5 kilos so extra postage will be required from buyers outside the UK. Red bevelled edged boards with gilt female figure on front and gilt titles and harp on spine black line decoration to top and bottom edges of boards and spine gilt edges to the pages. "The Standard Edition" issued by Blackie no publication date shown but preface is dated December 1887. Originally costing 8/6 per volume so 42/6 or just over two guineas for the set quite a lot of money back then. Condition-wise all have some bumping and minor wear to spine ends and to a lesser extent to the corners some fading to the spines those of volumes 3 and 4 have turned brown rather than pink. But otherwise a good clean tight set of books with no splitting to the bindings. Contains the poems and songs by Burns along with "The Life of Burns" by J G Lockhart in vol 1; an essay "On the Genius of the Poet" by Thomas Carlyle in vol 2; letters by Burns in vol 4; "On the Genius Character and Writings of the Poet" by Professor Wilson letters between Burns and George Thomson and other material in vol 5. 260pp 11 b&w illustrations vol 1; 260pp 14 b&w illustrations vol 2; 260pp 12 b&w illustrations vol 3; 288pp 11 b&w illustrations vol 4; 290pp 9 b&w illustrations vol 5.
