In 4° piccolo; 204, (4) pp. Legatura coeva in mezza-pelle con autore e titolo e filetti in oro al dorso. Piatti foderati in carta marmorizzata coeva. Tagli spruzzati. Un forellino all'cchietto dove è in parte cancellata la lettera N del nome di Byron nell'occhietto “Poemi di Lord G. Byron”. Antico timbretto di biblioteca circolante faentina all'occhietto e nella pagina di dedicatoria. Esemplare in buone condizioni di conservazione. Prima edizione italiana di questa traduzione delle celeberrime opere di Lord Gordon George Byron, Il prigioniero di Chillon, Parisina, L'assedio di Corinto e il canto Lara, nella traduzione ad opera del celebre letterato originario di Novi Ligure, Pietro Isola (31 dic. 1785 -) discendete da un'antichissima e nobile famiglia ligure. Militante della Giovine Italia ebbe un ruolo, seppur non di primissimo piano, nella congiura che sconvolse l'esercito sardo, nel quale ricopriva il grado di Tenente e di aiutante di Campo del Genrale V. Casazza di Valonte nel 1833. Denunciato da un sergente, venne arrestato il 16 maggio del 1833. Giudicato, venne condannato alle dimissioni del grado e all'espulsione dell'esercito e poi gli venne assegnata una pensione annua di 300 lire ed ingiunto il domicilio coatto a Novi. In letteratura compose diverse liriche e tradusse dall'inglese, lingua che padroneggiava notevolmente. La sua traduzione di queste opere di Byron parteciò a far conoscere il grande poeta inglese, al pubblico italiano. L'opera contiene: Dedica del traduttore all'avv. Fernando Isola - Il prigioniero di Chillon (con dedica del traduttore all'illustrissima signora contessa Ottavia Masino-Giglio di Mombello nata Borghese); Parisina (con dedica del traduttore all'ornatissimo signore D. Luigi Richeri, pastore arcade e socio delle altre piu' distinte accademie d'Italia); L'assedio di Corinto (con una introduzione del traduttore e una notizia istorica); Lara (canto I e canto II, con dedica del traduttore alla ornatissima signora Gabriella Buonvicino nata Goffi). The binding is signed by Zaehnsdorf on front free endpaper verso. As usual, this copy is bound without the half-title and advertisement leaf. A number of the raised bands are rubbed and scuffed and dust-stained. Gilt tooling to the compartments one the spines. A few of the hinges are cracking. The front hinge of Vol. I is splitting for about the top 2 inches. Front hinge of Vol. 7 is cracking down the length. Most of the hinges are sound. Marbled endpapers. Overall good condition joints all torn or starting; boards bowed; corners bumped and worn; edges and spine ends worn; darkening and tears to leather on spines; gift inscription and prev. owner's name. Vol. I: front board loose chip to leather on spine and rear board. Vol. II and III: chip to title piece on spines. Vol. V: front joint torn to point the front hinge is revealed front board still attached; lightly foxed. Childe Harold's Pilgrimage
Small format book shows a little wear to red HB cloth decorated covers with 1/8th inch tears at bottom spine, very slightly worn corners, spine cocked. Text/interior is clean and free of marking of any kind. 192 pages. Part of Cassell's National library series. Author illustration on glossy paper opposite title page. A poem in Spenserian stanzas by Lord Byron (1788-1824), Cantos I and II appeared in 1812, Canto III in 1816 and Canto IV in 1818. When the first two cantos were first published they sold out swiftly. Byron declared: ?I awoke one morning and found myself famous.? Childe Harold was originally to be called ?Childe Burun?, an archaic form of the Byron family name. The poem tells of a disillusioned young man, a melancholy, solitary, cynical ?Byronic hero?, who tires of his sinful, pleasure-seeking lifestyle and decides to travel. The poet drew on his own experiences of the Grand Tour.
