br. Un moto sussultano accompagna il transito terreno di Byron: una furiosa galoppata che possiamo ripercorrere attraverso questi Diari, unici scampati al rogo delle sue memorie. Sono sei documenti di epoche cruciali: un diario londinese, all'apice del successo mondano e letterario; il diario di un viaggio nell'Oberland bernese; un diario ravennate ove s'intrecciano i conclamati amori con Teresa Guiccioli e i moti carbonari; un breve zibaldone; una raccolta di «pensieri slegati», che mostrano un Byron epigrammatico; e infine il diario della Grecia, interrotto dalla morte a Missolungi. Ne risulta un mosso ma preciso quadro della turbolenta traiettoria byroniana. Lo stile è secco, tagliente, vivace, corso da un brivido ancora settecentesco e un'elettricità tutta romantica. Le dolorose, feconde contraddizioni si fondono in un unicum che rivela la fascinosa, fatale sintonia tra fautore-personaggio e la nuova generazione, motivo di una celebrità fino a lui impensabile; e poi il carisma, la natura camaleontica, il mistero e il magnetismo - ingredienti che, agitati come si conviene dalla sorte, vanno a comporre una miscela capace ancora di stordire.

br. Nel suo poemetto "Beppo", scritto nel 1817, Byron si cimenta per la prima volta con l'ottava rima della poesia comico-satirica italiana, che riutilizzerà nel più tardo Don Juan. Qui la voce narrante racconta la storia di Laura, una dama veneziana il cui marito Beppo è disperso in mare da tre anni. Senza troppi rimpianti, lei si considera ormai vedova e prende come amante e cavalier servente il Conte. Assieme al suo cicisbeo Laura va una festa di carnevale, dove viene ammirata per la sua bellezza da tutti e in modo particolare da un turco. Questi non è altri che il marito il quale è stato fatto prigioniero e ridotto in schiavitù, poi liberato da una banda di pirati a cui si è unito convertendosi all'Islam. Adesso, da uomo ricco, è tornato dalla moglie e al cristianesimo. Senza falsi moralismi o ipocrisie, senza condanne della corruzione morale e della frivola vanità della società veneziana, la vicenda volge al lieto fine.

Un forellino all'cchietto dove è in parte cancellata la lettera N del nome di Byron nell'occhietto “Poemi di Lord G. Byron”. Antico timbretto di biblioteca circolante faentina all'occhietto e nella pagina di dedicatoria. Esemplare in buone condizioni di conservazione. Prima edizione italiana di questa traduzione delle celeberrime opere di Lord Gordon George Byron, Il prigioniero di Chillon, Parisina, L'assedio di Corinto e il canto Lara, nella traduzione ad opera del celebre letterato originario di Novi Ligure, Pietro Isola (31 dic. 1785 -) discendete da un'antichissima e nobile famiglia ligure. Militante della Giovine Italia ebbe un ruolo, seppur non di primissimo piano, nella congiura che sconvolse l'esercito sardo, nel quale ricopriva il grado di Tenente e di aiutante di Campo del Genrale V. Casazza di Valonte nel 1833. Denunciato da un sergente, venne arrestato il 16 maggio del 1833. Giudicato, venne condannato alle dimissioni del grado e all'espulsione dell'esercito e poi gli venne assegnata una pensione annua di 300 lire ed ingiunto il domicilio coatto a Novi. In letteratura compose diverse liriche e tradusse dall'inglese, lingua che padroneggiava notevolmente. La sua traduzione di queste opere di Byron parteciò a far conoscere il grande poeta inglese, al pubblico italiano. L'opera contiene: Dedica del traduttore all'avv. Fernando Isola - Il prigioniero di Chillon (con dedica del traduttore all'illustrissima signora contessa Ottavia Masino-Giglio di Mombello nata Borghese); Parisina (con dedica del traduttore all'ornatissimo signore D. Luigi Richeri, pastore arcade e socio delle altre piu' distinte accademie d'Italia); L'assedio di Corinto (con una introduzione del traduttore e una notizia istorica); Lara (canto I e canto II, con dedica del traduttore alla ornatissima signora Gabriella Buonvicino nata Goffi). The binding is signed by Zaehnsdorf on front free endpaper verso. As usual, this copy is bound without the half-title and advertisement leaf.
