Guérin, Vincent, Léon Pallière, C. Thevenin et gravées par Benoist. Vincent Campenon, né à la Guadeloupe en 1772, fut le premier poète guadeloupéen à intégrer l'Académie française. Son Enfant Prodigue connu un grand succès populaire et donna son nom aussi bien à des enseignes de magasin qu'à d'innombrables pièces de théâtre. L'accueil dans les milieux littéraires fut cependant moins enthousiaste. Disciple de Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, il truffe ici son texte de notes sur l'histoire naturelle de l'Égypte. Édition originale de ce poème à succès avec ex-dono de l'auteur : « A Mr Millevoie de la part de l'auteur ». « Au fauteuil de Delille aspire Campenon, A-t-il assez d'esprit pour qu'on l'y campe ? -- Non. » Vincent Campenon (1772-1843) naquit en Guadeloupe ; il rejoignit Paris avec sa famille en 1776. "Ému de pitié pour cette monarchie qui tombait, pour cette reine surtout dont le trône se changeait en échafaud" (Saint-Marc Girardin, Essais de Littérature et de morale, 1853, p. 99) il composa à la Révolution une romance à la gloire de Marie-Antoinette. Menacé d'arrestation, il se réfugia à la frontière Suisse. Ce n'est qu'à la Restauration qu'il regagna Paris, où il fréquenta le Salon de Virginie Ancelot. Là, il publia L'enfant prodigue, long poème élégiaque qui rencontra un grand succès populaire. Il fut le premier guadeloupéen à être élu membre de l'Académie française, bien qu'un épigramme moqueur ait circulé dans Paris : Provenance : Charles-Hubert Millevoye (Abbeville : 1782 - Paris : 1816), ex-dono. De précoces infirmités développèrent chez Millevoye cette mélancolie maladive qui fut le caractère de son talent. Il s'essaya à la poésie sur les bancs du collège, eut même quelques pièces de vers imprimées dans des recueils locaux, et vint à Paris pour achever ses études à l'École centrale, qui remplaçait alors le collège des Quatre-Nations (1798). Après avoir commencé son droit, puis être entré en qualité de commis chez un libraire, il se tourna décidément vers la littérature. A dix-huit ans, il publia un petit recueil de vers : Poésies (1800, in-8), dont les meilleures pièces sont : les Plaisirs du poëte et le Passage du Saint-Bernard. Son goût et la nature même de son talent le portaient vers les concours académiques ; l'Académie de Lyon couronna son épître sur le Danger des romans (1804) et l'Académie française une série de poèmes : l'Indépendance de l'homme de lettres (1806), les Embellissements de Paris, le Voyageur (1807), la Mort de Rotrou (1811), Goffin ou le Héros liégeois (1812) ; l'Invention poétique fut couronnée par l'Académie d'Angers et Belzunce ou la Peste de Marseille fut désigné pour un des prix décenneaux. Ce genre n'était cependant pas la vraie veine poétique de Millevoye ; il réussit beaucoup mieux dans l'élégie. Son deuxième recueil, qui contenait l'Amour maternel, la Demeure abandonnée, le Bois détruit, la Promesse, le Souvenir, le Poète mourant et la Chute des feuilles, est l'expression la plus complète de son talent.
