Nasce dal sogno di un amico, durante una passeggiata con William Wordsworth, l'idea della "Ballata del vecchio marinaio", la vicenda fantastica della maledizione che si abbatte sull'equipaggio di una nave a causa dell'insensato gesto di uno dei marinai: l'uccisione di un albatros. Bilanciando sapientemente il mondo del reale e del soprannaturale, razionale e irrazionale, in un grande mito di mare e ghiaccio, espiazione e colpa, con la presenza di creature ultraterrene e forze misteriose che sospingono la nave e il racconto, il poeta si fa albatro nella metafora dell'opera, e fondendo romanzo gotico, letteratura di viaggio e ballata tradizionale, riesce a salvare se stesso tramite il potere dell'immaginazione nella propria creazione artistica. Recuperando la forma metrica della tradizione poetica popolare inglese, con un linguaggio evocativo e immaginifico, Coleridge compone una delle liriche manifesto del sublime romantico inglese, la cui poetica raggiunge, in questo volume, la sua perfetta espressione nelle incisioni di Gustave Doré, artista eclettico e poliedrico, in grado di incarnare coi suoi tratti cupi e angosciati lo spirito dei testi della letteratura coeva e non.

"Posta come poemetto introduttivo alle Lyrical Ballads, pubblicate a Londra nel 1798 insieme all'amico e sodale William Wordsworth, la "Ballata del vecchio marinaio" di Samuel Taylor Coleridge, che qui presentiamo nella nuova e convincente versione italiana di Massimo Giannotta, è ancora oggi uno dei componimenti poetici in lingua inglese più letti al mondo, se non il più letto. Considerato un vero e proprio manifesto di quell'incipiente movimento che, sul finire del Settecento, traghetta in Inghilterra lo Sturm und Drang tedesco e dà origine alla grande stagione del movimento romantico inglese, è un poemetto in sette parti che appare, in tutto e per tutto, figlio dei suoi tempi. Di quei tempi, vale la pena ricordarlo, che vedono addensarsi su di un secolo apparentemente "illuminato" le nubi procellose delle due grandi e traumatiche rivoluzioni - quella industriale e quella francese - di cui l'autore è spettatore e indiretto testimone. Di fronte al mutarsi di un mondo nuovo che non appare più quello filosoficamente sognato e auspicato ma, drammaticamente, il prodotto, contraddittorio e ipocrita, del pragmatismo della classe mercantile borghese e puritana che vede nel profitto, generato dai commerci, dall'industrialesimo e dal proto-capitalismo nei quali l'Inghilterra si è ormai assicurata il primato, l'unica ragione di vita, il poeta reagisce con il solo strumento di cui sembra disporre - quella invenzione poetica all'apparenza nuova nella forma e nei contenuti - per cercare di comunicare tutto lo sgomento e la attonita preoccupazione di fronte a una società in cui non sembra più riconoscersi e che gli si rivela sempre più intenzionata a escluderlo, a renderlo una voce nel deserto, inascoltata e inascoltabile." Eufemio Maria Andreasi è l'ultimo discendente - in 25a generazione - di una famiglia originaria di Mantova e trasferitasi nel primo Novecento, dopo alterne vicende (compreso un passaggio in Argentina), prima in Sicilia e poi a Torino. Amante da sempre della poesia (ha tentato anche la composizione in proprio) è soprattutto nelle traduzioni, dall'inglese, francese e spagnolo, che ritiene di aver dato il meglio di sé. Giunto ora abbondantemente all'età della pensione, ha pensato di dare alle stampe almeno una parte dei molti lavori svolti, che sottopone ora all'attenzione dei lettori.

Large folio hardcover in decorated gray cloth boards and red cloth with gilt lettering and grey endpapers; b&w illustrations; unpaged. Very scarce: From rear endpaper: "Of this reproduction, lithographed by Charles R. Wood and Associates, of San Francisco, the edition is limited to 350 numbered copies only. Coleridge's peom with DorÈ's illustratiosn was first published in London, 1875, Paris, 1976-1877, and New York, 1877. The present repdorduction is a facsimile of a copy of a New York printing of 1884., except that the cover has been redisigned in a manner more in keeping with the present-day taste. The stock, Curtis Colophon, was selected because its finish and color closely resemble those of the copy reproduced. The black ink is neutral in tone and non-gloss, in conformity with the standards of the nineteenth century. THIS COPY IS NUMBER 352." 352 is handwritten in red ink. **A larger, heavy book.
