Questa biografia sul poeta catanese, figura di spicco della cultura siciliana e italiana del secolo scorso, realizzata da colui che lo stesso Rapisardi definisce il "principe dei biografi", vede la luce poco prima della morte del poeta. Avvertito dall'autore che si accingeva a scrivere di lui, ebbe comunque il tempo di inviare un commento che possiamo leggere nelle prime pagine.

As translated for the first time from the original French into English by John Myers O'Hara and John Hervey this perfectly serviceable reference copy is not fancy but is complete and sturdy and comes complete with a fine gift inscription from O'Hara to "Tim Tully with kindest regards" dated Sept. 17 1929 and with a tipped-in black-and-white photograph underneath it in this case of John Myers O'Hara at Camp McFee 1921 standing at the rear of a jeepney leading to some waffling of the endpaper. Black cloth covers moderately rubbed rubbed gilt title at spine. Pasted inside front flap is a note from a review extolling the virtues of Jose-Maria de Heredia an interesting French poet.Member I.O.B.A. C.B.A. and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Tappe di un percorso che non è solo privato, perché la storia del Sudafrica la incalza da vicino, si infila nei versi, reclama uno spazio: in tutto il suo percorso sono fitti i rimandi a eventi, luoghi e persone, del passato recente dell'estremo lembo del continente africano. Una storia violenta, fatta di dolore e morte, ma anche di lotta e speranza. Cresciuta in una famiglia borghese, anglofona, che la tiene al riparo dalla brutale realtà dell'apartheid, decide alla fine degli anni Settanta, dopo aver lavorato attivamente nel movimento anti-apartheid, di emigrare in Nord America: l'unica possibilità di fronte all'alternativa rifiutata di entrare in clandestinità prendendo parte alla lotta armata. Il periodo canadese si rivela cruciale per la sua formazione artistica, ma il ritorno in Sudafrica si fa a un certo punto irrinunciabile. Se il Canada le ha dato consapevolezza di sé come poeta, il Sudafrica è l'unico posto dove sente di poter scrivere. Quella di De Kok è, nell'attenzione costante al dolore degli altri, una poesia che si elegge a testimonianza lirica di un paese tormentato. La poesia serve a non dimenticare, a riparare in qualche modo l'amnesia del passato, ad aiutare a ricostruire ciò che resta dell'identità, della memoria e del trauma.
