‎Hendrik Adriaen die in Brielen in 1868 werd geboren was een bijzonder veelzijdig man. Enkele jaren na zijn geboorte verhuist hij naar Vlamertinge om uiteindelijk in 1896 in Poperinge te belanden. Naast een drukke private veeartsenijpraktijk en zijn functie als officieel keurder had hij een enorme passie voor archeologie en geschiedenis. Hij staat dan ook gekend als Poperinges eerste amateurarcheoloog die pas decennia later navolgers heeft gekend in de streek. Bovendien was hij een gepassioneerd verzamelaar van antiquiteiten gaande van munten en penningen over archeologische artefacten tot aardewerk, beelden en veel ?heemkundige? voorwerpen. Zijn verzameling stond na verloop van tijd van heinde en verre gekend en hij voerde een drukke correspondentie met tal van specialisten, verzamelaars en antiquairs. Zijn verzamelwoede ging heel ver: of het nu streekeigen stukken waren of van randgebieden (gaande van Limburg tot ver in Frans-Vlaanderen), of het nu betrekking had op de regionale geschiedenis of de veeartsenij: hij verzamelde werkelijk alles. Na zijn overlijden in 1951 kwam zijn verzameling bij zijn kinderen terecht. De stad Poperinge had in 1951 de collectie met betrekking tot Poperinge gekregen maar door de desinteresse van het stadsbestuur kwam er van het beloofde stadsmuseum niets terecht. Het Museum Meester Adriaen in Poperinge dat het initiatief was van zijn zoon Fernand kende maar een kortstondig bestaan en na de sluiting werd een deel van de collectie verkocht. Evenwel zijn zowat alle Poperingse stukken, zowel archeologische als antiquarische, bewaard gebleven bij de erfgenamen. De Heemkring Aan de Schreve vond het dan ook de ideale gelegenheid om voor het eerst een overzichtstentoonstelling te houden van zowel de archeologica als de kunstcollectie van Meester Hendrik Adriaen. Deze unieke tentoonstelling loopt tijdens de maanden juli en augustus in de Kapel van de Zusters Benedictinessen (Boeschepestraat). Tegelijkertijd verschijnt er een boek over Meester Hendrik Adriaen en zijn collecties: ?De Passies van de verzamelaar? van de hand van onze hoofdredacteur, historicus Kristof Papin, die tevens optreedt als curator van de tentoonstelling.‎

De niet te missen expo 'Zeldzaam en onmisbaar' brengt een persoonlijke selectie van een kleine 100 werken uit de Vlaamse Topstukkenlijst. Kunstwerken, manuscripten en artefacten waarvoor bezoekers anders Vlaanderen moet doorkruisen zijn nu tijdelijk op één plek te bewonderen. Sommige stukken worden voor het eerst tentoongesteld. En dat alles ter ere van de twintigste verjaardag van het Vlaams Topstukkendecreet. 'Zeldzaam en Onmisbaar' is een absolute must-see die je meeneemt op een kunsthistorische wandeling langs verschillende parels uit Vlaamse collecties. Zo'n 35 grote en kleine musea, maar ook kerken, bibliotheken en particuliere verzamelaars geven de topstukken uit hun collectie tijdelijk in bruikleen. Stuk voor stuk zijn het werken die sinds 2003 zijn opgenomen in de Vlaamse Topstukkenlijst. Dat decreet zorgt ervoor dat topstukken die aan de criteria "zeldzaam en onmisbaar" voldoen, niet zomaar Vlaanderen mogen verlaten en dat ze zo goed mogelijk worden beschermd en bewaard. De expo opent met een kleine klepper van formaat. De 13.000 jaar oude gegraveerde rolsteen uit Museum De Kolonie in Lommel is meteen het oudste object op de Topstukkenlijst. Volgens experten gaat het zelfs om het oudste voorwerp in Vlaanderen dat door een mens is versierd. Van daar start een leerrijke trip door de kunstgeschiedenis die je ook esthetisch zal verwonderen. Middeleeuwse manuscripten, beroemde schilderijen van Hugo Van der Goes, Rubens, Jordaens, Ensor, Magritte en Bacon, beelden van Lucas Faydherbe en Henry Moore, een tekening van Michelangelo (de enige van Vlaanderen) maar ook kostbaar zilver, een aardglobe van Mercator en een zeldzaam meubel van Pierre Gole, de meubelmaker van de Franse koning Louis XIV, laten je niet onberoerd. Het jongste werk van de tentoonstelling is 'Great American Nude #45' van Tom Wesselmann, uit de Amerikaanse Pop-Art van 1963. Ook verschillende gerestaureerde werken staan in de schijnwerpers zoals het beeldhouwwerk 'Johannes rustend aan de borst van Jezus' van Meester Heinrich von Konstanz, de schilderijen 'De dood van Maria' van Hugo van der Goes, 'Judit' van Jan Massijs, ?'De kunstkamer van Cornelis van der Geest' door Willem van Haecht en Rubens' zelfportret uit het huis van de meester zelf. Het MAS bewaart zelf ook 6 erkende Vlaamse topstukken waarvan het tegeltableau 'De bekering van Saulus' van Franchois Frans, in de expo te zien is. De 'Koorkap, in opus anglicaum' is één van de andere topstukken uit de collectie. die kan je bekijken in het gratis Kijkdepot op de tweede verdieping. Vlaamse topstukkendecreet Wat waardevol is, moet beschermd worden. Dat is de logica van het Vlaamse Topstukkendecreet. Sinds het ontstaan van dit decreet in 2003 zijn een kleine 1.000 objecten en verzamelingen omwille van hun uitzonderlijke historische, cultuurhistorische, archeologische, wetenschappelijke of artistieke betekenis als topstuk erkend en beschermd. Voordat het Topstukkendecreet bestond, zijn portretten van Jacob Jordaens van een eeuwenoude Vlaamse familie naar het Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam verhuisd en kon de Londense National Gallery in 2001 vier prachtige stillevens van Joachim Beuckelaar bemachtigen. Vandaag zouden deze stukken dankzij het Topstukkendecreet dus niet meer zo maar uit Vlaanderen kunnen vertrekken.‎

‎Franz Moritz Wilhelm Marc (Munich, February 8, 1880 - Braquis, March 4, 1916) was a German expressionist painter. Marc mainly focused on animal portraits, where he tried to capture not so much the external appearance, but the inner essence of the animal. The color symbolism he developed played a major role in this. For example, blue stood for "the male principle, stiff and spiritual" and yellow for "the female principle, soft, cheerful and sensual". Under the influence of Cubism, he also greatly simplified the forms. As a result, his paintings tended increasingly towards the abstract. His latest works clearly refer to the true expressive power of abstract expressionism.‎

‎L'art de l'Océanie ne peut être abordé en dehors d'un contexte économique et géographique, où les structures sociales, les croyances et les rites diffèrent d'un lieu à l'autre. Tous ces éléments, y compris le passé de la région, sont mieux connus depuis la première moitié du XXe siècle, grâce au travail des ethnologues. Sur un fond de traits culturels communs, on découvre en Mélanésie une grande diversité dans la production artistique dont voici quelques exemples : - aux îles Salomon, l'ornementation porte pour l'essentiel sur les pirogues utilisées pour les déplacements cérémoniels ; les motifs principaux renvoient à la mer, à la faune et aux divinités marines ; - au Vanuatu (ex-Nouvelles-Hébrides), des ?uvres d'art, comme les tambours monumentaux, sont davantage liées aux rites qui ont pour théâtre la place de danse et la maison des hommes ; - la Nouvelle-Calédonie a laissé des bas-reliefs de grande taille, des sculptures sur pied, de merveilleux assemblages de coquillages ou de serpentine verte. ‎Jan Vaerten (Turnhout, 5 augustus 1909 ? Beerse, 23 december 1980) was een Belgisch kunstenaar. Na het vroegtijdig verlaten van de school, dit als gevolg van zijn revolutionair karakter, komt hij bij zijn oom terecht in de verf- en drogisterijwinkel. Leest en studeert veel en komt vroeg met de harde waarheid van het leven in aanraking. Buiten enkele avondlessen in beeldhouwen aan de academie te Turnhout -klas van Victor Avonds- en enkele zondagslessen te Schilde bij Albert Van Dyck, is hij autodidact. De kunst wordt een levensdoel, een levenshouding. Hij huwt met Coleta Gevers in 1942 (overleden in 1973). Hij vestigt zich te Beerse. Hij heeft drie kinderen, Maike, Frank en Dirk. Hij verlaat de verfwinkel. In 1951 wordt hij benoemd tot professor tekenen aan het Nationaal Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunsten te Antwerpen. Dit stelt hem in staat zich in zijn kunst gans vrij uit te leven. Hij is medestichter van het culturele centrum "Het Atelier" te Deurne bij Antwerpen. Dit centrum genoot een internationale faam, dankzij de merkwaardige tentoonstellingen, concerten, dansavonden en voordrachten. Het was een plaats waar vele kunstenaars elkaar ontmoetten, wat soms tot heftige, maar vruchbare gedachtewisselingen aanleiding gaf.‎
