Jindrich Styrsky (1899-1942 Prague) célèbre peintre, poète et cofondateur du mouvement surréaliste de Prague, fut aussi un grand photographe, essentiel pour la photographie surréaliste, comme en témoigne son ouvrage très recherché et depuis longtemps introuvable Emilie prichasi ke mne ve snu (Emilie me visite en rêve), Edice 69, Prague, 1933, ainsi que l'album Na jehlach techto dni (Sur les aiguilles de ces jours), publié après sa mort à Prague en 1945 avec des poème de Jindrich Heisler(traduction française publiée par le Editions Sirène, Berlin, 1984). Le dernier livre de photographies originales et inédites. Reprises de Vue de Jindrich Styrsky est publié dans un tirage restreint, 24exemplaires, fait à partir des négatifs originaux par Jacqueline Hyde, et desquels aucun autre tirage ne sera effectué. Ces négatifs ont été confiés à Radovan Ivsic par son amie peintre Toyen (à qui le livre est d'ailleurs dédié) et qui fut aussi une grande amie de Jindrich Styrsky et comme lui un incontournable personnage de l'histoire surréaliste. Radovan Ivsic, né à Zagreb en 1921, a, depuis son arrivée à Paris en 1954, participé à toutes les activités du mouvement surréaliste. Il a notamment sonorisé deux grandes expositions surréalistes internationales en 1959 et 1965. Il a publié des livres très recherchés, entre autres illustrés par Joan Miro (Mavena 1960) et par Toyen (Le Puits dans la tour, 1967 ; Le Roi Gordogane, 1968 ; Tir, 1973). Elsa Schiaparelli, initiatrice de l'exposition avait sollicité André Breton pour la séléction des ouvres exposées et leur accrochage ; ce dernier fit appel à Marcel Duchamp qui s'était chargé quatre années plus tôt de l'Exposition Surréaliste de Paris ; ce dernier n'aimant pas l'ornementation chargée de l'espace d'exposition du 451 Madison Avenue décida d'en masquer les moulures et peintures murales à l'aide de cordages suspendus à travers l'espace. La première couverture du catalogue représente un pan de mur de la grange de Kurt Seligman sur lequel Duchamp avait tiré cinq balles à l'aide d'une carabine ; la deuxième couverture comporte le titre de l'exposition sur fond de gruyère. Le titre de l'exposition fait allusion aux premiers papiers que devaient fournir les immigrants pour obtenir la nationalité américaine.
