Women Americana
Three Sisters: An Intimate Photo Album of the Midwest Between World Wars
Women. Photo Album: Three Sisters. Midwest 1918-1927. Oblong octavo. Covers are brown cloth boards held by ties. Oblong octavo 11" x 7" inches. Title "Photographs" in gilt. 230 snapshots in a variety of sizes most 3.5" x 4.5" inches but also 2.25" x 3.5" 1.5" x 2.25" and 7" x 5". Both black and white and sepia in glossy and matte finishes. Very occasionally torn along the fold and minor silvering to a few photos. The life of three sisters growing up in the Midwest is captured with warmth and incredible detail creating a culturally significant document of middle-class family life between the World Wars. The majority are captioned in white pencil or white ink with the name of the person in the photo and a brief description like "Sunday best"; some are a little ironic tone such as "Seeking sunburn" underneath a photo of two of the sisters sweaty and bare armed in a row boat and "No water but our tongues" under a picture of the sisters as little children in bathing suits on their porch pulling silly faces. We follow the women from childhood through early adulthood through their schools and summer camps across suburban Ohio the shores of Michigan and the wooded Ozarks. The private lives of these young girls are revealed to be impish spirited and silly in these intimate photographs; At the same time they were growing up in a period of great change. With the passage of the 19th Amendment in 1920 they were the first generation of women to come of age in a time when they could exercise the right to vote. Bumping at corners and a half-inch tear at top of spine otherwise clean. First page separated. A fascinating cultural artifact of a historically significant period for women's rights. unknown books

Women Authors) Swanson, Jean & Dean James
BY A WOMAN'S HAND: A GUIDE TO MYSTERY FICTION BY WOMEN
N.Y.: Berkeley Book 1994. 1st pbk printing May 1994 so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine oversize trade paperback. Over 200 profiles of authors plots and titles. Includes indexes by series characters geography & type of detective. "Mysteries written by women have always been an important part of the genre and have constituted a growing trend over the past several years. This book provides information on more than 200 women writers. The editors state that they took 1977 as their starting date because that was the year of the publication of Marcia Muller's first Sharon McCone mystery Edwin of the Iron Shoes which is "often considered to have ushered in the era of the modern private eye." Agatha Christie Dorothy Sayers and others from the "Golden Age" of mystery are not included. Among the newer writers who can be found here are Linda Barnes Sarah Caudwell Elizabeth George Joan Hess Lia Matera and Sharon McCrumb. Coverage is given to writers of suspense such as Mary Stewart Phyllis Whitney and Mary Higgins Clark; but not to writers of espionage such as Evelyn Anthony and Helen MacInnes. Emphasis is on American Canadian and British writers who have published at least three books. Entries are arranged alphabetically by author. There are separate entries for writers that produce under more than one name for example Ruth Rendell and Barbara Vine. For each writer a brief essay gives information about style series characters and other significant features. Mentioned in entries are initial books in a series award winners and other important titles. Each entry refers readers to "read-alikes"; for example in the entry on Dorothy Cannell the editors state that "comedy-mysteries by Elizabeth Peters Charlotte MacLeod and Joan Hess also may be fun for readers of Cannell." This feature makes the work similar to What Do I Read Next The volume concludes with a number of indexes: by series character by place and by type of detective such as amateurs clergy and cooks. There is also a list of short story anthologies by women mystery writers. First Edition. Trade Paperback. Fine. Book. Berkeley Book Paperback

Women Automobile History Recreation Unknown Photographers
Collection of Photographs of Women and Their Cars 1910s–1950s
United States and Europe 1950. Eighty-seven photographs mainly 2 ½ x 3 ½ inches and smaller. Many with manuscript captions and some with studio stamps. Overall excellent to Near Fine. A collection of photographs of women and their cars dating between the 1910s and early 1950s with most photos dating to the 1920s and 1930s. Some photos identify the location and occasionally the names of the women; they appear to be mainly unrelated. The photos’ collector has identified approximate years and models of many of the cars which range from Model Ts and Model As to a 1930s Gräf & Stift a mid-1920s Willys-Overland Whippet a 1928 Hupmobile and more. The photos include shots at home on vacations—two women pose in a canyon in the Superstition Mountains with a “desert water bag†hanging off the hood of their Plymouth—or seemingly at college as two girls stand in front of a car labeled “ΛXA LuluBelle†and “Death-Dodgerâ€.

Women driving was controversial and they faced opposition and derision from the start; it was seen as uncouth and inappropriate to women’s delicate physical and mental constitution.1 In the late 1950s as the Interstate Highway System was under construction suggestions were made that marking and signage should coming in soothing pastel colors and that highways should have a truck-free slow lane for panicking women drivers.2

Of interest to historians of gender and the automobile and auto recreation.

1 Virginia Scharff Taking the Wheel: Women and the Coming of the Motor Age University of New Mexico Press 1992.
2 A. Alphabet cross-stitched in capital and lower case letters with decorative embroidered border and information on maker stitched at bottom: "Mary Ruffle October 25 1815 Aged 9". Samplers were valuable parts of girls' education from the sixteenth to nineteenth centuries as it demonstrated both their skill in needlepoint and their achievements in literacy. The parents of these young women proudly displayed their embroideries as showpieces of their daughter's talent and status. In recent years these samplers have become important in museum collections as representations of early American female education. Women midwives
Four 18th century decrees for Mainz School of Midwifery
Childbirth Midwives were responsible for the safe delivery of the foetus. Their work could be a steady and chosen occupation. Initially there was no formal training or the need to obtain a license but this changed within Europe in the 1700's since some town authorities recognized the need for trained midwives in order to protect the safety of the public. In contrast to the 'norm' of the 15th and 16th centuries midwives were women concerned with public affairs since they were employed by the municipal authorities and were entitled to a salary. They were also paid by their private clients. Hence in a male oriented society midwives -who came from the lower middle class were called to challenge gender divisions.

Four decrees printed in German block lettering related to the Mainz School of Midwifery from 1784-1785. 5 sheets 12 ½ x 7 ½ in. Decrees relate to registration exam protocols and professor approbation's issued by Baron von Frankenstein. Documents contain handwritten notes at bottom. Light scattered foxing and thumb-soiling. Horizontal crease in all sheets. Very good condition. unknown books
